first two? 'it' is shit because jarvis can't sing in tune, and the band can't play in tune...bit of a problem if you're playing folky stuff
actually, "freaks" was okay.
is really good, one of their best I think, although I believe they've been pretty consistent so can't really say they have got better with every release. To answer the original question though:
Brand New
The Beatles
of Montreal
I can't believe Jamie_Bummers is the only person to have said that so far. I think Of Montreal's new one is their most consistent, but I really like some of their older stuff as well, I just can't stomach entire albums of it, so I'm not sure that counts. If I liked Radiohead, I'd probably say Radiohead, but I don't. Ooh, Heatmiser. That's a good one. Their first 2 albums are barely worth listening to, but their last is ace-o. Okay, I just opened my "My Music folder" for inspiration. Hmm. Nope, that's it.
Huh, thinking about my top 5 of 2007, four of them fit the description. I never cared much for either Low, Mice Parade, the Magik Markers and Asobi Seksu. But I certainly do now.
forget the early stuff. the ropey recording i made on my mobile phone from the first practice session - you know, the one before they had songs and were mainly tuning up – is without a doubt their best work.
If only i'd recorded the conversation in the pub when they decided to form a band in the first place...
Brand New
Radiohead
Death Cab For Cutie (as in transatlantism)
My Bloody Valentine
Refused
Nirvana
Regina Spektor
At the Drive-in
AFI (Although Decemberunderground went a bit average)
Primal Scream (again, except the last album)
most bands do produce their best stuff early on (also heavily related to the fact that lots of bands don't get beyond 2 or 3 albums).
Anyway,
ATDI
Pulp
Fugazi (sort of, basically I prefer the Argument to first album but one of the only bands ever who continue to be great for a whole long career).
totally gash now... in my opinion. They'll never record anything better than Lonesome Crowded West. I agree with At the Drive-In though. Shame the new bands are both tripe.
I agree with the Beatles and Sufjan Stevens. Also i would put Danielson/Danielson Famile in there too.
I'd maybe even say Galaxie 500 got better from great.
from Violator onwards, and by then they'd been going for nearly a decade. Their latest is one of their best too (although one track is possibly the most embarrassingly rubbish recording ever made, but in a weird way counts as a plus for the album)
i reckon almost any band. it's were they had the most time working on songs and their approach wasn't too slick - usually. Also the preassure to churn out an album that must sell equally and better than the first to keep the contract isn't necessarily a great way to let that creativity flow.
BRITNEY SPEARS!!! errr maybe not, her new stuffs like totally emo-tastic. on a serious note i kinda feel this way with Garbage, whilst i love their latest stuff which granted is from a few years back now... theres probably a ton of other bands i agree with this theory.
Fullerov
The Beatles
The Smiths
Bob Marley
Nirvana
The National
lots and lots more.
beastie boys
sort of.
justin timberlake
nirvana
i thought timberlake
sold out a bit when her left nsync
*he
witty response ruined
Beatles
The National
Of Montreal
Hold Steady
Johnny Cash got good again near the end after years of gash...
Braid
Sleater Kinney
BRAID?
WHAT?!
Summers
is right.
frame & canvas
is so much better than the first two albums
agreed.
anyone who tells me their first record or 'age of octeen' is their best output is a liar.
Fuck you
Modest Mouse
Brand New
At the Drive-In
Nirvana
Death Cab
no no no!
Brand New have just got better and better!
wasn't the question
'bands that have gotten better'?
my bad.
missread the question. rookie error.
at the drive in
radio
head
PULP!
their first like 4 albums were rubbish!
incorrect. not rubbish.
just different.
RUBBISH
run of the mill pop rock band, they didnt hit gold really until His And Hers and I stick by that.
none of those albums could be descrbed as pop rock
i dont think you've ever heard them.
To be honest with you
i dont remember what they sound like
k
thnx
bye
x
the first two are bilge
from "separations" they start to get good.
first two? 'it' is shit because jarvis can't sing in tune, and the band can't play in tune...bit of a problem if you're playing folky stuff
actually, "freaks" was okay.
Cult of Luna
Explosions in the Sky
Rachel's
are we allowed ones that get better than worse?
if so, i'd say coldplay, and blur.
then*
I saw this t-shirt drawn on with marker pen at reading fest
"I hope they play their old stuff"
Genuine quotation marks.
good point.
this thread has made me realise how few artists have improved with every release. there are so many that go up and down, as it were.
*
and so many more that start off brilliantly but can never reach that point again
very true!
we had this discussion at work last week, and that was the conclusion we came to too.
Pavement
Slanted & Enchanted just isn't as good as people make out.
^ very much this
Do you ever get tired of being wrong?
I think at some point someone gave us very different ears.
PS:
Slanted & Enchanted = best album of all time, btw.
I'm not sure I can be bothered to start it but I'd like to see a Pavement thread
where all 5 albums (6 if you include Westing) get listed in order of preference by people who genuinely love the band.
Fuck it, I can be bothered.
i think we should dwell on the fact we both like Pavement?
which makes us both ACE. YEAH!
Of Montreal, alot.
Interpol.
actually, i got that wrong.
of montreal used to be better
as did interpol.
my mistake.
Talk Talk
Would be the obvious.
Though actually I am quite partial to their early stuff as well...
I bought Laughing Stock t'other day
and it's excellent.
Belle & Sebastian
Haven't bought the last album and EP
The Life Pursuit
is really good, one of their best I think, although I believe they've been pretty consistent so can't really say they have got better with every release. To answer the original question though:
Brand New
The Beatles
of Montreal
and some others that people have already said...
hmm
the smiths
!!!
of montreal
radiohead to a certain extent.
Kraftwerk
I like Computer World most. .
I imagine most people prefer Scott Walker's later records.
MBV. .Although I like some of their C86 era stuff. .
Beatles, obvs
I can't believe Jamie_Bummers is the only person to have said that so far. I think Of Montreal's new one is their most consistent, but I really like some of their older stuff as well, I just can't stomach entire albums of it, so I'm not sure that counts. fullerov said it too
and i copied him.
actually though
abbey road is mostly shit. and so is let it be.
basically just the white album.
Radiohead
The Beatles
Manic Street Preachers
Boo Radleys
The Clash
Paul Weller (as in The Jam not his solo bollocks)
Oasis
and more recently...
Bloc Party
The Futureheads
The Rakes
Art Brut
I think you might be drunk.
people not
understanding the question-centric warning
I prefer your earlier work.
Oh bugger
Sorry. Misread the question! Or rather didn't get to the end of the question...
In that case then...
Pulp
Kings Of Leon
At The Drive In
Low
I prefer your earlier work.
(I agree with you on Kings Of Leon though).
bloc party??!
no way jose
The Blood Brothers
Some Girls
david bowie
he tried all kinds of wrong before genius struck
all though I am very keen on his work with The Lower Third
"Can't Help Thinking About Me" etc
and yes: Boo Radleys. Acres of poo before the gold fields of giant steps.
and Husker Du,
too
Erm
I prefer Boo Radleys EARLY stuff.
Ichibod And I & Everything's Alright Forever > Giant Steps and Wake Up Boo! *100!
Hmm..
Radiohead.
Fugazi.
At The Drive-In.
Modest Mouse.
Bright Eyes...ish.
secret machines
most heavy metal bands
oops
didnt read the post properly
.....
Oneida - bit too much classic rock posturing at first but came up good with Anthem of the Moon.
Mclusky - Just got better and better and better and better and... see their last b-sides for proof.
Every Time I Die
Cabaret Voltaire
Scritti Politti
Elliott Smith
Figure 8 is still my favourite.
Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr both worked better with good production values.
And yes, Pulp. Up to Intro/His and hers they hadn't found their stride.
The Flaming Lips
With the exception of At War With the Mystics, they are one of those rare bands that keep improving their sound
Elliott Smith
"From a Basement on a Hill" is my favourite album.
As a general rule I prefer Nick Cave's albums from Henry's Dream onwards although there's some of my favourite songs before that.
I prefer REM's mid-late period stuff - not the last album but Green though to the mid-90s.
erm
hidden cameras
elliot smith
my morning jacket
black rebel motorcycle club
none
most bands peak and trough like any other
Well.
Obviously not Silver Sun.
Huh, thinking about my top 5 of 2007, four of them fit the description. I never cared much for either Low, Mice Parade, the Magik Markers and Asobi Seksu. But I certainly do now.
bah
forget the early stuff. the ropey recording i made on my mobile phone from the first practice session - you know, the one before they had songs and were mainly tuning up – is without a doubt their best work.
If only i'd recorded the conversation in the pub when they decided to form a band in the first place...
Hmm
Metric maybe
!!!
Kasabian (bizarrely)
LCD Soundsystem (amazed no-one's said them yet)
umm
Brand New
Radiohead
Death Cab For Cutie (as in transatlantism)
My Bloody Valentine
Refused
Nirvana
Regina Spektor
At the Drive-in
AFI (Although Decemberunderground went a bit average)
Primal Scream (again, except the last album)
Super Furry Animals
Fuzzy Logic was good.
Rings Around The World was awesome.
They were always pretty fucking special though.
Radiator FTW
But Hey Venus is still decent so...
REM definately
Interpol...um... duh?
The Strokes?
The Cooper Temple Clause?
Every band that made a great great debut and then made two average+ albums
Weezer?
Most obvious answer.
i'm surprised
at how many people have read the question wrong. its only 2 lines!
relatively few
most bands do produce their best stuff early on (also heavily related to the fact that lots of bands don't get beyond 2 or 3 albums).
Anyway,
ATDI
Pulp
Fugazi (sort of, basically I prefer the Argument to first album but one of the only bands ever who continue to be great for a whole long career).
Sufjan Stevens
The National
Casiotoneftpa
+lots of others. but i have to go!
Modest Mouse
totally gash now... in my opinion.
The Fall
Motorhead
Tom Waits
The Jesus Lizard
Pulp
Mark Lanegan
Elliott Smith
The Smiths
Queen Adreena
Oasis
Shit first album.
Quite alot of bands get better. Quite a few get worse. Even more have ups and downs.
But its all subjective. Innit.
.
Brand New
The Cinematic Orchestra
Camera Obscura
Hmm, that's all I can think of right now.
Beats.
Byrds (to a certain extent)
Gram Parsonz
No-one else really. Everyone goes crap.
Depeche Mode
from Violator onwards, and by then they'd been going for nearly a decade. Their latest is one of their best too (although one track is possibly the most embarrassingly rubbish recording ever made, but in a weird way counts as a plus for the album)
i agree with
low
sleater-kinney
brand new
however; modest mouse- no!
Mine would be...
Envy
Mineral
Bright Eyes (haha)
Graham Coxon.
I said this to someone the other day
I shivered and died a little inside.
but it's often true
i reckon almost any band. it's were they had the most time working on songs and their approach wasn't too slick - usually. Also the preassure to churn out an album that must sell equally and better than the first to keep the contract isn't necessarily a great way to let that creativity flow.
my fave debuts icnlude...
Patti Smith // horses
Echo & The Bunnymen // crocodiles
The Clash // the clash
Suede // suede
U2 // boy
hmmm deffinately
BRITNEY SPEARS!!! errr maybe not, her new stuffs like totally emo-tastic. on a serious note i kinda feel this way with Garbage, whilst i love their latest stuff which granted is from a few years back now... theres probably a ton of other bands i agree with this theory.
