appetite for destruction has some amazing stuff on it. forget your preconceptions and turn it up loud whilst getting ready to go out on a friday night and i guarantee you will feel LIKE A MAN!!! etc. no really do that its great.
I think it would have to be 'It's so easy'. It doesn't have too much Axl Rose wailing & it kicks along. Having said that, I'd never chose to listen to G 'n' R ever again, and haven't done since I was about 14!
Ahh but when 'Appetite for Destruction' comes out, you're 11ish years old, and you think hard rock is Bon Jovi, they were quite an epiphany. I have, ahem, moved on since then. However, they were a part of my musical development. Having said that, 'Use your Illusion 1 & 2' were fucking terrible. I wonder whether Axl Rose will ever shit out 'Chinese Democracy'?
I know this is slightly harsh, but thank fuck im 6 years younger than you. Although a lot of brit pop (which was big when i was 11) has aged badly, its done so nowhere near as badly as gnr and their ilk.
Yeah but hot on the heels of my G 'n' R phase (about a year later) came discovering the Pixies and Janes Addiction, along with such great British luminaries as the Wonderstuff, Pop will eat itself, Jesus Jones, EMF, Carter USM, Neds Atomic Dustbin etc which any grebo will tell you, fucking roooooooled (at the time!).
yeah, great band. Have you read the article on Peter Laughner in Psychotic Reactions..., that compilation of Lester Bangs' writing? luckily read about the same time as The Day The Earth Met... came out. Although adds to the shame that they could never make a proper album
i can't believe the GnR bashing going on! - Appetite is one of the greatest albums ever made! Sure Axl is essentially Satan's scrotum, but some of the tunes they came out with stood them out from Motley crue and the like, who were truely and embarrassment
gettting back on subject, it just has the be Paradise City for me - their first hopelessly epic tune
The first time I saw them I thought, Hmm the guy with the silly top hat can really play the axe, but erm that guy can't sing fer shite.
But I was wrong. Later when Appetite came out it got played to death. Best: Jungle and Rocket Queen. Worst (terrible): Paradise City. Illusion records were more spotty but had some truly memorable stuff on them.
Now: In my reconstruction period I bought a G 'n R greatest hits. It's unopened.
"Slash is a one trick puppy, the man knows nothing else except cock rock..."
Indeed. But the man who replaced him in GnR- Buckethead- is a leading free improv guitarist. He's worked with Derek Bailey and other uber-avant garde types.
And this discussion is wrong. Anyone in their right mind knows that Appetite For Destruction rocks like little else!
Rocket Queen, for the bit at the end where Axl goes all semi operatic and cant quite pull it off, sounds top.
Appetite was the first album i purchased, (pre Definitely Maybe), and is rather good, does remind me of Never Mind the bollocks a bit, for some reason.

Hoping to expect a bit of kroutrock or even free jazz

Appetite... is a great album but for some reason I prefer both Use Your Illusions.
Coincidentally a live version Civil War has just come on VH2 :-)
Re: Fave guns n roses song
Except for "Welcome the the Jungle". That is unbelievably awesome.

'Ain't it fun when you've broken up every band that you ever begun.'
Most ironic cover version to date I reckon.
Crap song anyway.
