Did you catch their gig in Hoxton by any chance?
no
i missed that
ah
Well be sure to go and see them next time they're over if you haven't already. One of my favourite gigs of the year, easily
wow. ok
i remember going to see kings of convenience about 8 years ago along with turin brakes and gemma hayes.
nu-acoustic movement. ha.
I was thinking
A Place To Bury Strangers. I was listening to it earlier. It got totally overlooked in end of year lists didn't it?
It's
pretty good
its grrrrreat!
As much as I love From Here We Go Sublime
I've found that if you catch it in the wrong mood, then it doesn't do anywhere near as much for you as it does on those more appropriate times. But when I catch it right, it's feckin awesome. Think I'm going Ibiza this summer, and I'm gonna be all cliché and play that as I mooch around the villa
have been listening to the field
all day today. along with david thomas broughton, sunset rubdown and von sudenfed. all of which have been serious oversights to have missed for this long.
ooh, which David Thomas Broughton record?
the complete guide
to insufficiency
eee! yes.
That's my favourite album ever
Adam Gnade & Youthmovies - Honey Slides
[not an album. but pah!]
David Thomas Broughton - vs. 7 Hertz

DJ Scotch Egg - Scotchhausen
Bearsuit - Oh:io
Wait! Thats only five
I shall also add Proof of Youth by the Go Team to that
Yes to 65daysofstatic!
It was so underrated.
No Age has hardly been overlooked
although it is a great album. Same with The Field - aside from DiS most major publications have absolutely bummed it.
Anyway, for me:
Grails - Burning Off Impurities (massively underrated)
Studio - West Coast
Chromatics - Night Drive
Fennesz & Sakamoto - Cendre
Gravenhurst - The Western Lands
Voice Of The Seven Woods - s/t
Good call on ChromeHoof
Devil Sold His Soul - A Fragile Hope
Every Time I Die - The Big Dirty
Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger
Meet Me In St. Louis - Variations On Swing
Idiot Pilot - Wolves
The Honorary Title - Scream & Light Up The Sky
depends on your definition of "more love"
the Field album got loads of great reviews (2nd most highly scored album on Metacritic with 90% overall) and got a lot of attention on here (though some of it was negative, it was definitely a "big" album)
for me, i think the El-P album was of a similiar standing. It got a lot of love from some corners, but for me it stood head and shoulders above pretty much everything else? Does it qualify, what with all it's end of year list placements? Dunno, i think it should have been topping charts
the Dungen record was definitely overlooked by most corners (an A from Stylus notwithstanding). I'd say it's probably the best sounding (rock) album of the year
Well
Maybe I should have just written "Hello, if you haven't listened to these albums, then you should" - would that have passed your test for a perfectly titled and executed thread?
All I was trying to do was highlight a few records that people may not have heard of or heard and at the end of the day, a lot of people outside of certain circles won't have heard of The Field record or maybe even KOMPAKT in general.
Argh. So much negativity.
*So much pedantry
FYP.
More people should listen to the Big Business album und also "The Coast Explodes" by Mammatus.
http://www.myspace.com/bigbigbusiness
http://www.myspace.com/mammatus
Six. Errr
I bought a cool dub comp called Savage Pencil Presents Lion Vs Dragon in dub. That's very good indeedy.
Trans Am - Sex Change probably deserved mo re attention
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANPAIfqutA
Parts & Labor - Mapmaker was a good one, but the singing is very cheesy at some points.
Sol Powr by Neil Campbell was rereleased this year. That's good.
jeez
i wasn't being negative, i was looking at the wider issue of the thread. And being pedantic
detwistify your knickers pls
Just seemed entirely pointless.
Apart from reminding me how much I loved that Dungen LP and the band in general. Good call.
oh alright then
Chromatics - Night Drive
Modeselektor - Happy Birthday!
Holy Fuck - LP
Midnight Juggernauts - Dystopia
Prefuse 73 - Preparations
Yelle - Pop-Up
I've had a lot of PMs
so I'm just uploading a zip file with a track from each record for everyone to download. Give me five seconds.
Only one: Safetyword - man's name is legion
Was at about 2 or 3 on my "end of year list".
Seriously, amazing, amazing album. Infectious, joyous and brilliant.
Bad Music journalist analogy: Like battles if they had kids with Foals and lived in the middle ages and wore robes'n'shit instead of hoodies.
I'm sure it would'ave been huge if it got a "proper" release.
Aye, that's a great fucking record
I remember putting them on with Los Campesinos! at the Barfly though and lots of people weren't in to them. Those that were into them though absolutely loved them.
Here you go everybody
Enjoy:

lcd soundsystem
lulz, witty.
seriously:
bon iver - for emma, forever ago
frightened rabbit - sing the greys
bishop allen - the broken string
seabear - the ghost that carried us away
fireworks night - as fools we are
loney, dear - loney, noir
and andrew bird - armchair apocrypha, obvs. it got a bit of love but not NEARLY enough.
hm. that may have been seven.
BearsuitBearsuitBearsuitBearsuitBearsuitBearsuit
when i saw them there was shit all people there and the album was nowhere in the DiSers top 50 and it gets average reviews and it's a shame cos it's a lovely album.
Brap
A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Good
The Field - Bit naff
I shall investigate the rest. Moi j'ai been loving these.
Cobblestone Jazz - 23 Seconds
Bracken - We Know About The Need
Skeletons & The Kings of All Cities - Lucas
Tussle - Telescope Mind (2006?)
New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom
Julian Fane - Our New Quarters
Jetplane Landing - Backlash Cop
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
*shels - Laurentian's Atoll
Hopesfall - Magnetic North
Cutting Pink With Knives - Populuxxe
Baroness - The Red Album
Lucky Soul - The Great Unwanted
How the Pipettes were massive, and these guys haven't (yet) been, befuddles me. It might have had something to do with females in polka dresses I suppose.
Agree
Six? Nah
Only two from me (I can't be arsed to think about it more):
Grails - Burning Off Impurities; and
Do Make Say Think - You, You're a History in Rust.
Woah
Miracle Fortress sound amazing. Thanks!
:)
This:
1. Sunset Rubdown- Random Spirit Lover
2. The Tough Alliance- A New Chance
3. A Sunny Day In Glasgow- Scribble Mural Comic Journal
4. Keyboard Choir- Mizen Head To Gascanane Sound
5. I'm Widely Spread- Make More Plastic Spoons
6. MF Grimm- Hunt For The Gingerbread Man
Oh, and 7. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- Some Loud Thunder
(I always end up cheating at these)
.
This Et Al - Baby Machine
Gravenhurst - The Western Lands
Shady Bard - From The Ground Up
MUSCLES
Pitchfork gave it a pretty good review, but that was it. It, for some reason, didn't make Pitchfork's end of year list, and escaped the attention of most other music sites altogether :(
Tellison

and 65dos, which was actually really good, contrary to popular opinion fact fans!
I agree on 65days, definately a grower
the rest of mine are
'Telegenic'- 'Meet me in california when we're dead' which received absolutely no coverage anywhere.
'Young Galaxy' who I am shocked are so unheard of/ unappreciated.
'Mairee Sioux' was barely mentioned, I have only listened to half the album so far and it deserved to make end of the year just on the strength of those 5 tracks.
'Adam Gnade'- Whitby Island/ Palaces, wasn't mentioned anywhere, possibly because of limited release though.
Lastly the new 'raveonettes' one which I really enjoyed and seems to be disregarded just because they're no longer a cool name to drop.
Good call on
Mariee Sioux - Faces In The Rock
I heard it on Friday for the first time and it has made it immediately to the top of my must-buy list.
This:
Wooden Wand - James & The Quiet
Seventeen Evergreen - Life Emberasses Me On Planet Earth
Phosphorescent - Pride
Monkey Swallows The Universe - The Casket Letters
Gowns - Red State
Epic45 - May Your Heart Be The Map
FUCK! You've heard of Portugal. The Man!
Every time I've mentioned them on these here boards, my threads get nil responses. *tips hat* Although "Waiter: You Vultures!" was light years better...and Wizard isn't 'technically' an album.
Pedantry aside, I would've liked the following to have gotten more kudos:-
Field Music - Tones of Town (convinced that this is a classic modern pop album).
Weatherbox - American Art (Quicksand/Rival Schools awesomeness).
Hot Cross - Risk Revival (interesting post-hardcore).
(I can't think of three others at this particular point...apologies).
this lot.
white rabbits- fort nightly
aesop rock- none shall pass
weatherbox- american art
comeback kid- broadcasting
circa survive- on letting go
You've heard of Weatherbox too?!?!
^5!!!
These 6
65daysofstatic,
Miracle Fortress,
Sunny Day in Glasgow,
Chow Chow - Colours and Lines
Besnard Lakes - Are the Dark Horse(Although it had a lot of love, it should have had more)
Kissaway Trail - The Kissaway Trail (I thought they would be massive)
chow chow
yes...
Dälek
'Abandoned Language'
Got an excellent review on DiS (and elsewhere) and considering how much love the Subtle 'For Hero, For Fool' LP got, I expected this to feature on the critics top 50 and the board top 50 of last year.
An outstanding and progressive electronic album that shits all over the rather bland and dull Burial album. I fully expect to be crucified here for saying that now....
pfffft
The Most Serene Republic - Population
Devil Sold His Soul - A Fragile Hope
BTBAM - Colors
Aereogramme - My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go
Kevin Drew - Spirit If...
Tellison - Contact! Contact!
^ yeah aereogramme too
RIP
good thread.
Dalek- Abandoned Language. The opening track is real edge of your seat stuff. Paragraphs relentless is like a tidal wave of doom. Just a really hard hitting, brutal album.
!!!- Myth Takes. Miles better than the first one. The title track is so damn funky. Must be the Moon is the best song about trying to pull ever. Bend Over Beethoven is frankly mindblowing, like sex with Prince and Funkadelic all at once. And then Infinifold is the calming cigarette afterwards. Amazing album.
El-P- I'll Sleep When You're Dead. I know I say this time and time again, but this really hasn't had enough love in end of year lists. It's better than Aesop Rock's offering. And "None Shall Pass" is fantastic, so that shows how fantastic this one is.
Those are my three main ones.
Excellent
Dälek getting another mention...ta!
I forgot
the mind crushing skullfuck that is Ire Works by The Dillinger Escape Plan. That is one underrated album.
Ok
Architecture in Helsinki - Place We Like
BARR - Summary
Bearsuit - Oh:io
Bjork - Volta
Go Team - Proof of Youth
Napoleon IIIrd - In Debt To
You Are Number Six
Behold... The Arctopus - Skullgrid Possibly the most technically accomplished set of songs ever committed to compact disc. Endless replay value.
Rosetta - Wake/Lift
Expansive, beautiful and crushing post-rock/metal from one of the scene's most promising up-and-comers.
Chrome Hoof - Pre-emptive False Rapture
Disco and Doom make strange, but eminently listenable, bed-fellows; who'd a thunk it!
Scale the Summit - Monument
Aside from Skullgrid one of the most impressive instrumental albums released this year. Perfection.
Today is the Day - Axis of Eden
Another near-masterpiece from these sadly overlooked masters of noisy rock/metal.
Winters - Black Clouds in Twin Galaxies
Sabbath style retro-Doom with beautiful Beatles-esque injections of melody. It pains me that more people have never heard of this band, their crossover potential is huge.
Only one.
But it has the power of 6 good albums. Why this band arent playing Wembley I do not fucking know.
Science Fiction Illustrated by Mother and the Addicts.
The best band in the ukl at the moment, no questions asked. I have wasted too much time listenening to 'Highly recommended bands' on this site. I know what sounds good. This band sound good. Take my advice or go and fuck yourself.
...
Skeletons and the Kings of All Cities - Lucas
VA - Computer Incarnations For World Peace
Deadbeat - Journeyman's Annual
Pink Reason - Cleaning the Mirror
Raccoo-oo-oon - Behold Secret Kingdom
Pantha Du Prince - This Bliss (which has had *some* love, but I think was easily the best electronic record last year)
not as good as Apparat - wallls imo
iv not been on here long but did British Sea Power get much coverage? i love their new one
Aslo must second !!! and Chromeo (who are both awesome live)
and how about Boys Noize - OiOiOi! a collection of belters!
oh and Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers
in parts, just beautiful
I can't think of 6
Kevin Drew - Spirit If... methinks if it'd been released strictly as a BSS record it'd have gotten all kinds of love.
The Go! Team - Proof of Youth. It's even better than Thunder, Lightning, Strike but doesn't have the element of surprise T,L,S had being the band's debut.
Film School - Hideout. OK, so it sounds a lot like MBV... but y'know IT SOUNDS A LOT LIKE MBV!
I'm not convinced Field Music's Towns is as great as DiS reviewed it... but it's every bit as good as Hissing Fauna which got a lot of accolades.
.
Daniel Striped Tiger - Capital cities; Pretty much my favourite record of last year. One minute it's heavy/fast DC style Fugazi influenced mayhem, and the next it's some of the most interesting and beautiful instrumental pieces of 07.
Meneguar - Strangers In Our House; Someone find me a better straight up indie rock band than Meneguar, please. Fucking brilliant.
Epic45 - May Your Heart Be the Map; like, woah. Such a lovely record. LOVELY.
Damezumari/Fire Team Charlie split; Best slice of emo for me, of 07.
Fennesz / Sakamoto - Cendre; Pure gorg, ken?
Grouper - Cover the Windows and the Walls; Same as above, really.
oh yeah
the Meneguar album is amazing. Not as good as their first, but amazing.
I personally believe
that is is a crime that Tones Of Town by Field Music didn't feature anywhere in anyone's top albums of the year. It is amazing and definitely one of the best albums of the last few years, in my opinion.
CLIPSE
CLIPSE - HELL HATH NO FURY
ALBUM OF 2007
YOU KNOW IT.
From Here We Go Sublime
I would have killed someone to like that album.
but I thought
Good Bad Not Evil by Black Lips wasn't exactly underrated, but I didn't see it as much as I thought I would. I loved that album.
also:
Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. I thought it was wonderful, yet no one said a thing about it. :(
and
I thought Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon was PAINFULLY underrated. I thought it was very pretty but no one seemed to agree with me.
and that In Rainbows album. am I the only onw who knows about that? :)
hmmm
Esiotrot - Schmesiotrot.
Really one of the best pop bands in Britain right now.
Pants Yell! - Alison Statton
It had really bad distribution, but if you can find it, do!
Sly Hats - Liquorice Night
Australian baroque calypso!?
The Botticellis - Old Home Movies
I don't know if this actually came out, but it's good.
Mathew Sawyer & The Ghosts - Blue Birds Blood
You have to experience his voice (and his songwriting)
Clear Tigers - Brutal
It was set to be Pitchfork's next love affair, but they self-distributed it and next to nobody heard it.
