Where is the Job to?

I'm at uni in Ex. It's a nice place to be.

wham

http://www.exeterschool.devon.sch.uk/page.aspx?id=92 where the grass is green and the children are happy

Ah the school by the Hospital...

...looks like a lovely place. What info are you generally looking for to sway you?!

which area to live in

how easy to get to bristol
gig scene
best bits/worst bits

Pretty much nice and safe living anywhere!

Bristol is hour and the bit on the train, about the same to drive (that's my home from uni!)
Gig scene is pretty good, there's The Cavern and The Hub for smaller bands, the Lemmy for up and comers and the Great Hall at the uni for bigger gigs.
I quite enjoy living here as it's smallish and you can get around easily (the buses are pretty good and almost never come late) and they've just opened a new shopping complex thing which is alright.
However it does lack a bit of character down the high street, it's all Topman and stuff like that, although Martian Records is pretty good down Gandy Street. Also it's full of bloody students.

I'm from there and...

Well, i'm from a coastal town just down the Exe. Exeter is a sweet city IMO - v easy to get to Brizzle (45 mins ish on any regularly leaving train), really good for shopping following the new Princesshay development in the city centre (got an Apple shop t'other day) (ahem! not that shopping is my thing) -- near Exmouth, a fine (ish) town (good beach and cliffs), and Woodbury Common separating the two for like, nature. Beautiful coastline around that area. Dartmoor's close by too.

Gig scene is centred around The Cavern who have links going way back - i think Quicksand were their first ever gig. great little sweaty, barfly-esque place (http://cavernclub.co.uk), have played/got drunk (it's cheap)/witnessed many now-huge bands there in my time. Used to be a massive hardcore & post-rock scene going, still is to a degree. Also The Hub is gaining prominence among local bands. Some great places to go out too - The Firehouse is a splendid pub with a great jazz night (seriously) on Fridays for a quid, open late, and Timepiece is an excellent student-centric club. In all honesty though, the gig scene is decidedly bleak compared to some other larger cities/LDN.

Also: new big VUE cinema and arty Picture House...v impressive Cathedral too, good green. To sit in, like. and some good pasty shops. Always important. Oh, and Topsham is a harbour town nearby with some rulin' pubs.

HA

i went to that school!

what is the job?

in the Bursary?

marketing?

i reckon that could be a pretty cushy job. v. little marketing that i was ever aware of apart from a shitty little ad in the free local newsletter!

is it good pay?

ps yeah exeter is nice

decent gig selection, nice pubs, shopping is ok (got better recently), nice town generally, close to country etc

It's shit

So shit

Worst place on Earth. DON'T GO :'(

^

Everyone seems to be massively into drum and bass

The Hole in the Wall is a nice pub. They do a platter on a plate that is bigger than my torso

and a Hole...

in... the Wall.

Grew up not far from there

the Cavern is a sweet little venue which gets bands way bigger than you'd think for what is essentially a pub cellar.

other than that though, it's in a pretty gorgeous part of the world, but it can feel damn isolated at times, especially in winter...

^Blasphemy

The Cavern is NOT a pub cellar

The Cavern is the love of my life :)

It is a beautiful place to be - the campus is lovely and the city centre's still got a lot of old buildings lurking around, including the cathedral..

If you can't be dealing with students, though, steer clear of Vic Street and the Mount Pleasant area...

Best Wetherspoons

in the country. Easy.

The Imperial?

fo sho

What a view

It looks like the chamber room

in the Return of The Jedi with that big window

^Like only the best of us are...

:)

And the Impy? Best Wetherspoons in the country?

Biggest, but maybe not best, proving that size isn't always the deciding factor...

But the conservatory?!

And the view!

it's not a conservatory

it's a orangery.

i often think i'll move to exeter

when i get fed up of london.

i don't know why as i've never been there and have no idea what it's really like.

i just like the idea of it.

It's a nice place, my gf goes there for uni

But nightlife is very limited. Bar the Cavern, if you're only into the sort of music Drownedinsound covers, you're fucked. There's 5 or 6 clubs, which generally cater to Student needs ie student anthems (Cheese, basically). Can be pretty expensive for what it is. Lovely in summer though and the Imperial IS an excellent, excellent pub. Picturesque little place, but I'd imagine living there full time may grate after a while, with the lack of viable entertainment. What considerations are you taking into account?

i've heard it's hilly

that was enough to put me off..

Pffft

Cardiac Hill is made out to be this absolute bitch of a hill, but it's nothing. You can run up there quite easily.

Nickname. Few people have had

heart attacks going up it, apparently.

They must have been clinically obese.

so far

research suggests it is nice but lacking in rentable housing

what kind of thing are you looking for?

and have you had no luck so far?

ive only just started looking

and so far have only had a cursory look at the likes of rightmove.co.uk and the such like. (I would be after a modern two bedroom place under £600ish) I dont even know if i need a place yet-depends how the interview goes on Friday. But i am damn keen to get the job and move to Exeter.

hmm

i'm not sure how much rightmove and those places will have comprehensive listings for a place like exeter. maybe have a look around estate agents when you are down? i was asking because my mum has a room to rent but i guess you want a bit more than that :)

if they ask you in the interview why you want to work at exeter school you can say an 'Old Exonian' recommended it to you as a great place to be or something. that'll get you in fo sho.

"my mum has a room to rent but i guess you want a bit more than that :)"

how hot is your mum...?

Ive allowed plenty of time to explore the place and im doing uber research to try and land the job.

:D

(too hot for you to handle)
