I've never really thought they were very interesting before but the new material is sounding great, especially the new single Waving Flags. What does everyone else think?

no you're not.

I am in a similar catchment, their new album is the first I have truly fallen for. Love Atoms...

The Decline of = incredble

Open Season = a whimper. It's just so flat, the whole thing, there's nothing to really get excited about. It's as if the neighbours came round and told them to keep it down as it's gone 11

I did think

there was a few good songs on the first album but nothing incredibly moving, I agree with u on the second on album upon what I've heard. Did they not have some sort of lineup change between Open Season and the latest offering?

Only

the keyboardist leaving to concentrate on Brakes.

Open Season has its moments

but production-wise they were stuck between developing in a linear way from Decline to that big sound they've achieved on DYLRM? Nothing a thorough re-mix wouldn't make a tad better.

They've always been interesting

and DYLRM? is for my money going to be high in the end of year lists if there's any justice.

I can't say I approve of the demystification of semi-abandoning the singular stagenames, though. An image is an image!

i love

thier new one at the moment. Atom, No Lucifer, and Waving Flags especially.. iv only just got into them though is the first album worth checking out?? (i mean obviously i will at some point..)

the vocals of the lower toned singer reminds me a lot of the vocals on the latest Ataris album...

*remind

Yes!

The Decline of... is a masterpiece!

Agree

with the disapproval of the demystifaction. See the Sunday Times article last w/e, where they kept referring to themselves as Neil & Scott

well, i like

the new single in the same way that i liked the previous too albums. it's like, they do epic, they're just getting to it in a different way now to before.

no lucifer =

song of the year.

Never liked them

Saw them at the fort in Newhaven, still didn't like them.

New album is bloody good though

I got into them though open season

and still think it's good, although not as great as Decline.

The new album is fantastic. I mean, REALLY good. I cannot stop listening to it/ humming it. Took a few listens to get into but I reckon it could be [annoyingcertainpeoplemode] my album of 2008! [/annoyingcertainpeoplemode]

One thing that I am disappointed about is that they seem to have abandoned the artwork theme they had for the last two albums, which I thought was exceedingly cool. Also, they've plumped for quite a rubs album name "Do you liek rock music?".

its

very good - looking forward to the koko show this month

I'm not massively keen on the new album

I preferred angular, crunchy guitar BSP to sweeping, epic BSP - the production on the newie is just too polished for my tastes.

Lights Out for Darker Skies is amazing though.

I'm going to give Decline a listen soon

Carrion and Something Wicked are gems.

i think its important that I use this opportunity to chant

EASY! EASY! EASY! EASY!
EASY! EASY! EASY! EASY!

thanks

'The Decline Of...' is one of the best albums of these past seven years- FACT

'Waving Flags' is by comparison quite laboured and dull.

the new stuff i've heard

sounds a bit fist pumping epic indie anthem by numbers.

the decline of is an amazing album though.

we'll your wrong

loads of the new album is Julian Cope style garage rock wig outs! No Lucifer is a work of genius

and Waving Flags might be an epic indie anthem, but it's still about Slavia Prague and the ability of fine lagers to bring people together.

Doesn't matter what its about

It is, as Steve says, a "fist pumping epic indie anthem by numbers." And what's more its actually also- dare I say it- quite boring. 'No Lucifer' is pretty damn good but it still feels like a deliberate attempt to 'get the crowd involved', what with all that "easy! easy!" stuff. Though I can forgive it that, as it is enjoyable and good. Those are the only songs from the album I've given more than just a cursory listen to as of yet but really, to my ears at least, they're no 'Carrion'. And I have to face it. Don't get be wrong, Tristan, I WANT this album to be awesome. But I think the fact I got the leak of this the same day as the Los Campesinos album and have been listening to the Los Campesinos album so much more and raving about it with that too is a pretty good indication of how much they differ in quality/excitement value for me.

All three albums are great

but Decline of > Do You Like Rock Music? > Open Season

Yes

but The Decline was so good it's almost unrealistic to expect them to top it as it's one of the best albums of the new millenium.

I'm listening to DYLRM? for the first time... right now! and I think it's brilliant even if the indie-anthems-by-the-numbers critique doesn't have an element of truth.

My initial reaction is 8/10.

I agree with this

They're yet to make a poor album. OS loses it a bit towards the end, but finishes perfectly with True Adventures. Decline is one of the great albums of all time for me. The new one is very good - takes a few listens as ever, but very solid.

They're certainly the best British band at the moment, they really should be massive.

Im eagerly anticipating the new album...

more than im anticipating anything in the whole world ever. Including cake.

and also my birthday, which is the same day of release.

wooo

i love BSP so so much. I've been hooked since Decline came out.

DYLRM? clicked for me yesterday. Its absolutely brilliant. Ok its not the same angular thing as Decline but if it was- we'd all be complaining about how it was the same as decline and not as good.

No Lucifer is so, so good. The instrumental track is astonishing. The whole thing bar the start of one song is brilliant.

There arent (m)any british bands that have put out 3 brilliant album that sound very different. Open Season maybe the mellow record but It Ended on An Oily Stage, Oh Larson B, How Will I Ever Find My Way home... all amazing songs.

They're still going to play a fair chunk of Decline live no doubt so have no fear!

only started listening to them

5 months ago or so, but i haven't really listened to anything else. Decline is sublime and open season has its moments (It ended on an oily stage, Be Gone, Larsen B and the rest aren't too shabby either). Looking forward to the new album, not heard it yet. Thought i'd wait till the release date. And going to see them for the first time in the 21st. CANT WAIT!

same

i have DIS to thank for me finding them. though i admit to downloading DYLRM. i didnt realise it wasnt out yet

I really don't get the Open Season hate

it's really really lovely and has amazing songwriting and "atmosphere". It's not meant to be a rock stomper in the same way The Decline Of... was

I'd reverse all of what you say

The Decline Of... was the lovely, sublime album with atmosphere while Open Season is the attempted rock stomper (i.e. Please Stand Up).

Open Season is okay, there are some good moments.

Yeah

I prefer Decline but Open season is great bar victorian ice and the land beyond.

They're 2 of my favourite songs on it!

I think the Land Beyond is an amazing song.

^

This, but replace The Land Beyond with Victorian Ice.

Totally wicked and equally ace...

Hmm

I suppose victorian ice is ok. The land beyond I don't reall like though.

What do you think are the worst tracks?

The ones that are just

BSP-by-numbers.

The Land Beyond, How Will I Ever Find My Way Home? and Like A Honeycomb.

However, it does have North Hanging Rock which is gorgeous and almost makes up for those three songs' shortcomings.

I really like HWIEFMWH!

and like a honeycomb too!

stupid individual taste :(

How Will I Ever Find My Way Home

is the shizz, agreed

True Adventures

One of the best songs I have heard live. (And so is Lately)

According to the NME

'Lights Out For Darker Skies" sounds like the Pigeon Detectives.

Er...what?

Actually

what they wrote was that it sounds like it could fit on radio between the Kooks and Pigeon Detectives.

Because obviously that makes far more sense.

Obviously.

i remember seeing the copy of the decline

and when i put it on, i must have played apologies to insect life a hundred times, the part where yan says "Gymnastic whores down on all fours
With septic balls from fucked up whores" is great. open season is good as it has oh larson b on it and like a honeycomb.i've only heard waving flags which is great as i want to wait till DYLRM comes out.

i wasnt a fan til

Open Season came out, not sure about Waving Flags mind. I could do with an album full of songs that sound like 'Victorian Ice' from Open Season,no one else ever mentions that song.

I'm not crazy about their recorded stuff

but I saw them play in Carnglaze Caverns a couple of years ago, and they were incredible! This was just before one of them left to become Brakes.

whats the name

of that Brakes song that goes 'lying on the grass thinkin of Scarlett Johansen'. its genius, that.

Hold Me In The River

The second album's not a patch on Give Blood, mind...

i disliked them greatly

having seen them support pulp on their forest tour, and tried a couple of times to get into them in the following couple of years as friends who's musical opinions i often supported were fans but never really clicked with them.

moribund made my a best of cd last year which i liked a bit more but not massively.

then i went to see them again before christmas and fell in love with them. the new stuff sounds good and i really like the decline of now.
