where should club dis in london reside?

hello everyone,
i'm just starting to think very seriously about doing club drownedinsound in london. once a month to begin with, some ace bands (one of them reasonably big/known i.e. biffy clyro, planes mistaken for stars, crackout, rock of travolta, gemma hayes, oceansize etc...) and then a club playing the best music (beit rock, indie, punk, breakbeat...) but, but, but I need to find the place with the right vibe that I can actually afford.

At the moment I'm considering:
The Underworld: as it's in camden, has a good pa and club license.
Metro: oxford st, not sure about the pa and it has an odd vibe sometimes.
Borderline: ace venue, bit expensive to hire.
Studio Club: great venue, v.v.v.expensive bar.
Camden Palace: could be a laugh.

where else is there? all suggestions welcome.. london needs a central point for it's scene and we might as well do it cus we know what we're on about..

thanks in advance
sean

    Sean,

    how about the Water Rats?
good rep, great sound, it's the water rats!!

or Gossips, bad lighting but can have a good crowd, and sound...and i love the sound checks.

sound engineer: "ok. play a song... ok sounds good. thanks"

    classic!

if you need a great support act, fUSE is alive and well!!
    • Re: where should club dis in london reside?

the water rats is tiny though! little more than a pub with a dingy back room. not really a club venue if you're expecting any kind of turnout?
      • Re: where should club dis in london reside?

It's bigger than the Studio club and the Borderline.. or at least the same size.
    • Re: where should club dis in london reside?

and i wouldn't say bad lighting was much of a problem, adds to the mystery/cool element to bands/club goers, nothing worse than actually being able to see just how *normal* people are to spoil a night is there?

i think this discussion was had a while ago with 'some abandoned warehouse' being the result, quite a good one in my mind, I've had arguments about it with ppl, mostly ethical/indie ones, but hey

the betsey trotwood where they have track and field is quite cool for a club night and band thing, nicer feel than some of the dingy camden dives. dunno how much it is but i expect its not too bad. you'd have to ensure a decent turnout though

metro metro metro metro. easy to get to, nize size, the vibe will be provided by us (eeexcellent) and lots of memories.. what more could you possibly want? and did i hear you say PMFS in there?! (ahem, i'm having something to do with that one)

bull and gate is the best venue in london.
    • Re: where should club dis in london reside?

gotta be joking. another dingy north london toilet venue in my experience? still. if you want anywhere nice you have to pay more, i guess
      • Re: where should club dis in london reside?

In my experience of london gigging, I think the Bull and Gate is overall better than the Monarch, Metro, Hope and Anchor, Garage, Verge, Backyard Club, Studio 144, Dublin Castle and every other London toilet venue.

Monarch is easily the worst venue on the planet. Absolute shithole, run by cunts, with a god-awful sound system to ruin bands as a result.
