People coming around to her, perhaps, after initial 'meh'?
Long-standing fans out there?
Anyone yet to 'get' the girl?
This is a Mike Diver survey. Hello.

Anyone yet to 'get' the girl?
This is a Mike Diver survey. Hello.
really?
no.
i kind of liked her stuff on myspace.
then i saw her live. and it was just.... abominable.
^^^
I thinks she's brilliant, but then again I hate all the miserable guitar band tosh that everyone else here seems to love so much.
poor george
I felt really sorry for her at truck. there were lots of nasty men perving over her, and not really listening. this made me sad.
i'd argue with 'lots'
there were a bunch of younger teenager blokes going phwoar a bit and watching intently, and then a lot of other people looking confused and/or disgusted. and the bouncer, laughing.
yes
I saw the bouncer laughing. Maybe 'lots' is an overstatement but since there were only about 30 of us there, and at least 80% were doing that I think my statement is justified :P
xxx
...
The bouncers were all pissing themselves when Animal Collective played Leeds a couple of years ago.
yes I really like her
Except when she talks about her dad being an architect and stuff like that.
I've not seen her live though.
no
she's still horrendous
^
I listened to her on Myspace.
Wasn't passionate one way or the other. Nothing to make me wanna listen to her again to be honest.
Still definitely on the "meh". In fairness might change my mind if I listened to her more but can't see why I'd do that when there's so many things I'd rather listen to instead,
I saw her live
and just thought it was reeeally rubbish.
Video Verdicts?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhfr6_8GwlY
awful
not Feeder awful, but still shit
until everyone sees her live,
i ridiculously declare all opinions on her null and void.
initially slightly liked her
now wholly indifferent
not at all
doing their press are we?
but
she is totally awoooooga!
really don't like her music
fit though
'Awoooooga'????
'Fit though'????
These comments are... Ergh.
I find her attractive
but (and it's a big but, obviously) I find her music underwhelming. Hardly crime of the century.
These comments are...
...par for the bloody course when the only people writing on thus thread are pustule-enhanced Indie bedwetters who, frankly, terrified of women.
I'd genuinely like to know
what it is that a George Pringle fan enjoys about her music. Just out of interest.
she sounds a bit like
Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia...
Doing MBICR a massive dis-service there
I'm sure Emily would love to be compared to George Pringle
Who was comparing them?
I was thrown by the "sounds a bit like" thing
haha
I actually saw Emily watching GP at Truck, with an unreadable expression on her face. I considered going over to ask what she thought, but decided not to.
I'm going to ask her next time I see her
let us know how it goes
I still remember a good rant from Mark about people comparing MBICR to Arab Strap "as though nobody else has ever done fucking spoken word"
Yes, but did they do spoken word about how depressing life was?
Still, MBICR were pretty damn good back when Mark was with them.
I have an album of theirs (My Elixir; My Poison)
I can hear a similarity. I've only listened to her myspace page a while back, it didn't really do anything for me tbh.
shes a poet really isnt she?
so her words i expect
she is attractive
that is what they like about her music
i would never listen to a song of hers more than once
it would be like having the same conversation with someone over and over again.
like being on DiS?
i like it.
:D
I listened to the 'drownload' (oh my aching sides)
and it was all a bit 'so what?'. Presumably it's only because she is rather toothsome that she's getting any attention at all.
This is my favourite George Pringle number...

with get cape - I preferred get cape. Take from that what you will.
it seems to me
you enjoyed get cape... more.
Sorry Mike.
I always value your opinions, but if she's someone you're championing, I can't follow you on this one. The music's appallingly bland, sounding like one of those "Make music on your computer!" CDs from 1999 that you find in The Works, and the nonsense falling out of her mouth really is the sound of someone being amazed by the depth of their own pedestrian, pointless thoughts. There's nothing here. It's a shiny, sterile, plastic shell, surrounding a total void of creativity.
But she has a record contract. And I don't. I'm sat huddled in a blanket in front of my computer because I don't think I can afford to turn the heating on. I think we all know who the winner is here.
very accurate review
presumably she is prettier than you
Most people are.
I can only think of one person who wants to sleep with me, and there's no way she's going to give me a record contract. She might make me a lasagne later, though.
take the lasagna
it might warm your cockles. :)
xxx
I didn't mean to be mean
I was being "satirical" about the nature of George Pringle's appeal
Aw, I know you weren't being mean.
But it's true, sadly. All of it. Except I'm pretty sure the reason we're not famous has little to do with our attractiveness. That's a secondary consideration.
Maybe if we got her in to do some sort of poshrap over the top? Oh god. I want to rip my ears off at the thought.
...
You need to have more blastbeats.
.
I have bad enough tinnitus as it is. If route to fame is getting your tits out, and blastbeats, then I give up now. I'll take my ukulele and live in a treehouse.
that is true of any band
actually it might become my stock response
when someone asks me what I thought of their band. Better than "it was pretty good".
That has to be...
...one of the most pathetic posts I've read. She has a record contract and you don't? Maybe that's because no one is terribly interested in your want-to-be-Joy-Division-but-sound-like-The-Housemartins Indie whingeathon
The Housemartins > Joy Division
she's kinda witty
but no wittier than say, your average mate who's not especially witty or has any interest in wasting time making dodgy recordings on garageband.
what's the point?
i heard
she gets fingered by posh school kids.
*waits 2minutes then gets banned*
i heard
you stick lucozade bottles full of boiled water up your ass and stick dildos down you japs eye.
WC-BEA
^^^
You should be so lucky.
she's very attractive
and i like the 'LCD i love you but you bring me down' track, but the rest, not so much.
...
In bed she just lies there. I'm trying everything in my reportoire, but nothing. And she talks about nothing but soap operas all the time. Like I give a shit about what's happening in Ian Beale's life.
have you got no heart?
Team Beale are VERY important to me.
...
I HATE the Beales. But then, I'm not a twee loser.
I like her music
but I can see how people can get fed up with some the sheer mundanity (is that even a word?) of some of the lyrics. However, that seems to be half the point of it, it's very suburban and I also like the way she kind of creates this stream of consciousness too. Just a shame the backing tracks are still a bit shit though, having said that I'm not sure that technical competence is really all that relevant. Anyhow, I'll stop now because I'm rambling and probably not making much sense.
I watched the video for 'Carte Postale'
yesterday. It had a nice feel to it.
I still can't get my head around the accent or the production though. I'm sorry.
^seconded
I like the vid. very pretentious and pseudo arty. i like the rabbit too. :)
....was that because
I'm the bunny Colin, and you love me?
Sorry, no.
Oh.
Oh :(
i quite liked her the first time i saw her
at rota a long time ago. since then haven't really liked her at all. at the last.fm bash before christmas she certainly split opinions, with half the folk leaving and half really enjoying.
videos/sounds here:
http://www.last.fm/event/408174#
Horrific.
You're welcome.
i'm never going to get her
because they're nothing to get.
has anyone else read the small piece in the guardian about her? i can only imagine that the writer is her aunty. or a lascivious lady patron.
she's one of the most respected journalists in the country
fyi
LAURA BARTON ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED JOURNALISTS IN THE COUNTRY
oh get real.
oi
leave laura barton alone
Laura Barton is awful
have they stopped her Friday Music column yet, it made me long for the days of Julie Burchill.
i know!
she fills me with rage. julie was not so bad, her piece in granta about massive attack was one of the best bits of music journalism i've ever read. weirdly. well. for someone who plainly isn't very knowledgeable.
laura?
is that you?
Thank you for your thoughts.
I once wore that rabbit head. It was still warm...
My other half wears
the whole costume at least once a week. Scary...
i want that rabbit costume
for my imaginary boyfriend :P
i really don't understand why this thread was started
this was not a jag and i'd never ask what people think here as these boards are full of people who like Animal Collective and EITS and post sexist slurs at every opportunity.
I'm well aware that george makes music (that's more soundtracks and poetry, than traditional music anyway) that people here don't like and that what she does polarizes opinion and that people just don't especially get the humour.
the people who do love her love her like they bright eyes or jarvis and she's already inspired several people to take their writing and do similar things.
anyway, i'm glad some people are warming to her (i manage her part-time if people don't know, hence why every dick and harry here feels like they should have an opinion, the same people who hated the kaisers and thought i was dumb working with bat for lashes, probably) and i hope that one day some people here eat their words.
happy birthday to me. back to my fever.

I (like, I suspect, most people on here) sometimes feel the need to show off how very clever we are, by expressing our opinions and by putting lots of adjectives next to each other.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I mean no offence to the lady in question, or to you, when I comment on the music. You do what you love, which is the best thing to do, and I commend you heartily for it.
Having said that, I stand by my opinion of the work; there are many, many better things in the world and better things you could be putting your efforts into. This is, as ever, an opinion.
And happy birthday, from someone you don't know. Hope it's a goodie.
yeah
you're totally entitled to your opinion (and to tell me i'm wasting my time) but then you're in a plodding math-rock band that i personally don't get. previously people wouldn't have been able to hear an artist without buying their record and therefore would only have an opinion having read a few things and deciding to buy a record. now people just feel the need to express an opinion on everything, even if whatever it is fits nowhere near their comfort zone, yet for some reason they feel having and sharing a negative opinion is valid. if everyone was meant to like everything the world would be boring.
back to fever dreams
so you agree that that people having and sharing a negative opinion is valid?
That's fair enough, too.
Notice, though, that I didn't start the thread- just responded to a question. In my defence, I've read a few things, and heard everything that (I think) is available online (I think that single's on MySpace?), and then responded. As far as I can see, no-one's started a thread saying "I AM TEH H8TOR OF GEORGE PRINGLE LOL!!!!111!!"; we're answering a question. And again, personally, electronica and spoken word material is very much in my comfort zone; you don't see my making any comments about Foals, for example.
And I didn't mean to tell you you're wasting your time- like I said, you're doing something you love. More people should do that, rather than throwing more fuel the bonfire of the charts.
Would you say we were math-rock? I don't think we're technically that proficient.
you're not math-rock
you're just fucking great
It does beg the question
"what was the music forum created for then?"
precisely
Should we just play with the swear filter again
I like it when sean gets cross
