Anyone know much about them? I like some post-rock, but have seen some disagreement about them. Any good? And if so, where to start?

Standards is really good

they are ace as fook live

they're fucking awesome

don't call them post-rock though

Millions Now Living... blah blah and TNT are both amazing albums

they're at the very jazzy and experimental end of post-rock though

But

They are so totally post rock. Why do you think they're not?

They are brilliant.

One of the forerunners and most important bands of the whole post rock scene that sprung up early 90's.

They were are their best in that decade.

So much more interesting and experimental than most bands in the genre, to the extent that I'm not sure if they fit into the perception of post rock now.

they're amazing

ignore the postrock thing. they transcend genre. every album is truly brilliant.

I didn't know

you were a Tortoise fan!

All of their albums are good

but none come close to how good they are live. Best to start with Millions Now Living (their classic) or Standards (the most consistent).

Anyone else reckon the production on their records is a bit polite compared to how intense they are live? I'd love to hear an Albini-produced Tortoise record with the drums turned way up and all the rough edges left on.

Oh yes

That would be good. I found the last album "Its all around you" was a bit too polished. Still an excellent album though.

I wonder who produced their debut? That was more rough sounding.

terrible

They're good musicians

No doubt about it. Got some of their stuff years ago but I only listen to Seneca/Gamera these days as i find them a bit boring now. Seen them only once though but by this time most people had found new post rock idols and standards had changed. You read a lot about them being at the forefront of the genre but they are nothing like Mogwai, EITS, DOS and other post bands that are considered post rock these days.
I don't think I would buy another one of their releases though.

i really like them

but can only listen to a few songs at a time before i get irritated and bored. their polyrhythms are immense at times though. i love Cornpone Brunch. tune

Aye

That's because the genre label "post rock" has been totally bastardised to be an umbrella term for pretty much all instrumental rock music.

I've got loads of their albums.

I find most of them really, really dull now. Soz!
