if only so we can hear more pearlers like these:

'It's like a toaster, the ref's shirt pocket. Every time there's a tackle, up pops a yellow card.'

'The ref was vertically 15 yards away.'

'There are two schools of thought on the way the rest of this half is going to develop; everybody's got their own opinion...'

'Goalkeepers aren't born today until they're in their late twenties or thirties.'

'I don't think there's anyone bigger or smaller than Maradona.'

'England can end the millenium as it started - as the greatest football nation in the world.'

'They compare Steve McManaman to Steve Heighway and he's nothing like him, but I can see why - it's because he's a bit different'

'Despite his white boots, he has real pace...'

'You can't do better than go away from home and get a draw...'

'He can't speak Turkey, but you can tell he's delighted.'

'There'll be no siestas in Madrid tonight.'

'...using his strength. And that is his strength, his strength.'

'One of his strengths is not heading'

'Gary always weighed up his options, especially when he had no choice.'

'I'm not disappointed - just disappointed.'

'The tide is very much in our court now.'

'Chile have three options - they could win or they could lose.'

'That would have been a goal if it wasn't saved.'

'I came to Nantes two years ago and it's much the same today, except that it's totally different.'

'A tremendous strike which hit the defender full on the arm - and it nearly came off.'

'The good news for Nigeria is that they're two-nil down very early in the game'

'The substitute is about to come on - he's a player who was left out of the starting line-up today.'

'That decision, for me, was almost certainly definitely wrong.'

'I know what is around the corner - I just don't know where the corner is. But the onus is on us to perform and we must control the bandwagon.'

'Hungary is very similar to Bulgaria. I know they're different countries...'

'In some ways, cramp is worse than having a broken leg.'

'The 33 or 34-year-olds will be 36 or 37 by the time the next World Cup comes around, if they're not careful.'

'England have the best fans in the world and Scotland's fans are second-to-none'

'It's understandable that people are keeping one eye on the pot and another up the chimney.'

'I'd love to be a mole on the wall in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time.'

'It could be far worse for me if it was easy for me.'

'Young Gareth Barry - he's young'

'Argentina won't be at Euro 2000 because they're from South America.'

'They're the second best team in the world, and there's no higher praise than that.'

'The tide is very much in our court now.'

'There's a slight doubt about only one player, and that's Tony Adams, who definitely won't be playing tomorrow.'

'The Germans only have one player under 22, and he's 23'

'I've had an interest in racing all my life, or longer really.'

'We are three games without defeat is another way of looking at it. But if we are honest we have taken two points from nine'

'He'll also be very dangerous from set-pieces. That means he'll be a threat from free-kicks and corners in the final third of the field.'

'I'll never play at Wembley again, unless I play at Wembley again'

'You need 88 points for the title and we’ve got 61 at present with 16 games to go, but if you set targets you limit yourself'

'We deserved to win this game after hammering them 0-0 in the first half'

'You get bunches of players like you do bananas, though that is a bad comparison.'

'Not many teams will come to Arsenal and get anything, home or away'

'Shaun Wright-Phillips has got a big heart. It's as big as him, which isn't very big, but it's bigger'

'Nicolas Anelka left Arsenal for £23million and they built a training ground on him'

all extremely valid points!

but newcastle need keegan for another reaosn and that is so every newcastle game home and away can finish 8-6

The man's a genius!

I think they should give it to Jol though, he's there sort of manager. He'll spend shitloads and still struggle to get out of the bottom half.

there's absolutely no chance of Jol getting it

Mike Ashley's lifelong best buddy is Paul Kelmsley, current outgoing vice-chairman of Tottenham and the really annoying cockey fucker who always interviews the candidates in the Apprentice finals.

What has he been doing

for the last few years?

Also if anyone can link to a youtube clip of him falling off his bike on Superstars that would be good.

^probably one of the best things ever

but I can't find it. Will have to wait until the next installment of I love the 1970's with Alan Carr.

Correction

a soccer CIRCUS!

I tell you what

I would love it if he did

ha, i would too

as much as he's a cheesy whopper he's one of the few people who's been involved in the game who's enthusiasm for it matches that of the fans. the first two years he was our manager were unbeleivable. one particular sequebce if results were 5-2, 4-2, 0-4, 4-2, 3-0, 3-4, 6-2, 3-0, 0-4, 6-0. he's a genius.

You're a Newcastle fan

and you actually want him?

nope

i'm a City fan and i want Newastle to have him, but i'd gladly us have him back when Sven goes to Real Madrid.

oh ok

two matches in a row against your lot away. Both televised as well I think

yeah, should be a guddun on wednesday

we've not got a good record against your lot in the cup. i think it might even go to penalties on wednesday. who's your right-back at the minute? keeping Petrov quiet will probably be the key to you getting a result.

Neill is injured

so it's the one and only Spector

I like how

Mike Ashley said to Bill Kenwright that he shouldn't worry, as they are friends, and he would never make a move for David Moyes.

He could've cut that sentence down to "David Moyes would never manage us, as he has more sense".

I don't understand why Newcastle think they are a massive club, when they clearly aren't. They need to accept the position that they are in, and build upwards through stability.

I'm an Evertonian and we battled relegation year after year for far too long. If we chopped and changed manager every few months we'd still be in the same position.

Newcastle constantly dig their own grave.

Newcastle have won the intertoto

The only massive thing about them is their massive wage bill.

IMO, the reason why they didn't suceed under Allardyce is that he was brought in for his "straight talking, no nonsense, direct, long ball" football.
It just a shame he was given money and only had footballers with bigger ego's than their football skills.

I agree with Panda above, the fans and board need to understand that there's no short term success.

hahah

can you imagine if they give it to Alan Shearer?!?! A tv personality, albeit one much loved by the fans, can somehow magically do a better job than a veteran of the Premier League?? I hope he gets it, it will be hilarious.

To be honest

If he does get the job, then they'd be afraid to replace him. Which is not necessarily a bad thing for Newcastle right now. They have the support, they have a bit of cash, and they have a fair few decent players.

I'm sure that there are many people who could do well with that club given the time, but nobody is given any time at that club.

The guy's not a manager though

A team like Newcastle deserve an actual qualified manager, regardless of cult status. They might as well give the job to Michael Owen. They won't have a problem replacing him if he loses the plot and gets them relegated (or there or thereabouts).

I know he isn't a manager

but it is guaranteed that he won't be sacked after 8 months in charge. If it did go tits up they'd get someone in to assist, rather than to replace, and even then I'm sure he'd get longer than 8 months to do it himself. I think it needs someone like that, that the supporters wouldn't call for the head of after a week, and that the board will give a real go.

hmm

you seem to know exactly how Newcastle operate, which is strange. Instead of sacking him, they'd bring in someone to help him?!?! Eh? What, like an actual manager? You simply can't say things like that are for definite.

To say that Newcastle fans wouldn't turn on Shearer if he had a horrendous time in charge is pretty insulting to them. I mean, imagine the scenario. Nobody could smile through a relegation battle just because their hero was in charge.

it would be amazing.

But I'm Hughes gets it so Blackburn are doomed. DOOOOOOOMED.

I hope*

I noticed that typo as it was loading to be posted. It's the web version of watching a door shut while you're slowly looking for your keys and realising you left them inside.

personally

i hate Newcastle. A team with such a HUGE support and with the sort of finances only the Premier League can bring and they STILL do so badly, time and time again. So yeah, i'd love to see Alan Shearer given the job, it would just be adding insult to injury. Loltimes abound.

There have been some hilarious suggestions over the weekend

one wazzock suggested Lawrie Sanchez, and another Stuart Pearce with Shearer as his assistant. You have to wonder what planet some of these people are on.

Anyway, surely Keggles has had enough of the spotlight that comes with management? He always was a bit of a flake, and now he's away running some 'interactive soccer experience' in Scotland. No chance of him coming back into such a high-pressure job.

Oh I do love him

Happy weekend everyone!

:D

I remember when the news broke - I was more ecstatic than I've ever been!

i thought it was utter madness at the time

then spent weeks telling everyone we'd gone insane

now i'm happily telling everyone how wrong i was... especially after i saw him give an interview where he said our defensive frailties weren't such a big concern anymore because "if they score one, we'll go up and score two"!!11!!1!

3 clean sheets in a row..

I'd been screaming all season that if we concentrated more on attacking teams then our defence would be under less pressure. Lo and behold, that philosophy is proved right, after a bit of transition/bad luck..

I firmly believe we'll be in the top 6 next year, or at least strongly challenging.

i read someone

redknapp or o'neil ???

saying that under keegan newcastle might be the only team of catching the big four over the next two years

i'm not convinced we'll be challenging them (well, maybe lolverpool) next season but i don't mind being proved wrong

*

capable of

That was Harry Redknapp

it was in the Chronicle though. Both Alan Oliver and John Gibson probably just make up all the quotes. They are constantly slagging off Sunderland too. You don't catch the sport guys in the Sunderland Echo doing that to Newcastle. Because they were raised as classy gentlemen!

i didn't think it was in the chronicle

they'd fake the scores if they could get away with it.

...

"If Modric or Henry want to come for lunch, they're welcome anytime, we've got a nice big resturant with lovely food."
