Should I move to Bethnal Green?

Right, basically I've been living at home since last September, having conceded defeat at my folly at moving to Fulham.

One of my best friends now has a room in the house that her mum and dad own, and she wants me to move in.

Now it seems all great, but I'm a bit weary after my rash decision to move out before when I couldn't really afford it. I probably can now, but the reason for going home was to pay off my debts - and I've paid off about £30, and gotten very used to having lots of money all the time.

So I just take the plunge?

Yes

Where in Bethnal are you thinking?

yes.

living back at home is a curse

plus,

you'll be nearer to your girlfriends house, which makes a massive difference.

long distances suck

i would wait until you sort out your finances.

also, where do you work? living close to work makes your life a million times better, trust me on that one..

I work in Fitzrovia

TFL says it will take me 12 minutes to get to work.

My finances aren't exactly bad, I've less debt than others who earn less than me, it's just they never seem to go away

12 mins is a lie

TFL

is powerful lying. it wouldn't be too bad a journey, although i hear the central line is pretty horrific in the morning.

The central line is a nightmare.

However, if there is an alternative route to work for you using the district line (at whitechapel - pretty close the Bethnal green) do it. I actually find myself unwinding on the district line and normally have a nice time.

Are you joking?

I used to live on the District Line, it's horrific.

I could however get the Hammersmith and City line to Gt Portland St and walk

ignore them

i used to get the central line every morning and it was fine.

all depends on where you are

travelling from and to

it was from shepherds bush

i.e. commuter belt hell, to oxford circus.

that's fine

the other direction coming in from the east wouldn't be as good

this is true

fox you're wrong.

the central line in the morning from Bethnal Green in to central is horrific. My housemate often leaves for work without a bag and comes back at lunch to get it as it's too much hassle to try and get on the tube with one.

Last time I tried using it at rush hour I had to let 4 absolutely rammed trains go by before I gave up and got the bus.

You're 10mins away from Liverpool street by bus so you're laughing.

...

Your friend is a n00b. You get on the carriage 1 place right from the entrance to the platform. Use the side door. You will get a seat by Liverpool st. guaranteed. If you're ruthless about it, anyway. Like I was.

And in summer you get a nice breeze through the window. Bonus.

I am an expert in Tube Strategy.

top strat

yeah bang on - you gotta be ruthless - treat it like class war - elbow the suits remember to be a gentleman though and offer your seat to the old and injured and with child as to offering your seat to a lady - thats so bullshit and keep the mp3 player down - i eat peoples faces out if they dare blare me - dont back down on this ! sorry what a rant!

who does that?

i find that highly retarded.

it's all about active-queuing.

...

The kind of active queuing that results in a granny with a chipped tooth hurling obscenities at you as you trundle off on the tube/bus that was meant for her?

I also practise 'active-queuing'.

that's the one!

No no.

I stand by my District Line recommendation. 6 months of quiet 7.15 trains has made me a loyal journeyer.

The Hammersmith and city line's kinda few and far between from Whitechapel but still none too shabby IMHO.

I'm sure you'd enjoy living with friends more than parents anyway and Bethnal green is well connected.

Central Line is where it's at.

District is gash.

I totally hate the idea of living walking distance from work

If I was ever 'sick' or just generally taking a day off it would just be a nightmare.

what?

why?
i leave at 8:30 and get to work on time, and i'm home by 5:30, which means i get my dinner just in time to watch the simpsons. it's fucking BRILLIANT and sure beats spending two hours a day on public transport.

I always sorta liked that

Obviously I 'beat' you with my working from home schtick now but the tube time was usually the only time I got to just listen to music or read my book or generally relax.

Do it

Cut the apron strings

bethnal green

is not as safe as houses, but better than bow!

D'oh

You just reminded me that the last time I went to my mates house on the way there someone tried to steal my decks and on the way back someone tried to grab my phone!

No don't do it

It's further away from Loftus road mate!

Central Line to White City!

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU RS!

If you've got the opportunity

to stay where you are and actually save some money then do that. Move at the end of the year.

But I might not get a chance to move in with a pal

I couldn't hack living with randos

save up some cash

buy a place and then you can decide who lives with you.

And won't you be moving in with someones Mum & Dad?

No they live in the Black Forest

Buying for the next couple of years is idiocy - the market is going to collapse, I'm just going to clean up when it all goes tits up

I'd go for it

Just make sure you don't repeat whatever mistakes you made last time with money

Well that was mainly due to who I was living with

my rugby mates from uni who all had insanely paid jobs and liked to live the life.

Also then I was on 18k, now I'm on 25

I'd have thought you'll be fine on £25k

I'm going back to my parents in Hackney in the Summer for a month or two and will probably happily move into a shanty after a little while there

I am always amazed by people

who choose to pay rent when they have the option of rent free accomodation in their parents' house.

To have a room of your own in your parents' house beyond 18 is fucking brilliant.

Depends what your parents are like

and what the house is like. I have to go home in the Summer for a few months and am dreading it because the place is tiny and although my parents are lovely, will ask non-stop questions about everything

Also

incredibly annoying. When I was at home, my mum wouldn't sleep if I was still out, and the next day she would yawn away and assure me that it was ok, but I felt really guilty.

Also, parents live in boring parts of town.

"To have a room of your own in your parents' house beyond 18 is fucking brilliant."

except for that bit when your parents still live there.

also: no it isn't.

^ this completely

you gotta live off your own back really

It's alright

My parents are lovely and I enjoy living with them. But my room is tiny and whilst I enjoy getting a seat every day, the train journey is really long (albeit the same length as it took me to get to work from Fulham)

Not when

your parents have a habit of treating you as if you're still 14.

HI!

No way

Being poor is infinitely preferable to not breaking free of the family circle. But, of course, it depends on the parents in question...

i live there

take from that what you will

I also live there

take from that what you will. i enjoy its features:

fried chickens.

shops full of sparkly £2 jewellery.

pubs of fail (Salmon & Ball, Misty Moon).

pubs of win (Royal Oak, Owl & Pussycat, The Camel, the One Right By The Camel).

the lush lush streets around columbia road.

arguments between car-clampers and people getting their cars clamped outside my house.

Beyond Retro.

the owl and pussy cat isn't in bethnal green

it's practically on shoreditch high street!

It's just off Bethnal Green Road!

Disclaimer: statement in header gives absolutely no support to my argument.

I'm not so much arguing for Betty G now I think about it: more the things that can be acheived within a walking radius of 10 mins from my front door.

Oh oh! Here's another good one. Living close enough to the Working Men's Club that you can sneak home for sly drinks.

:) :) :) :)

:)

Point about Bethnal Green...

The Central Line is mostly great but gets MEGA BUSY so quickly and early. If you have to be at your job for strict 9-5 then you'll have a hella time trying to squeeze on in the mornings.

If you can flex it starting between 8 and 10, say, then it's not an issue really.

bethnal green

is a complete hole.

although it does have a strip club which sells itself as the ‘number one american-style gentlemens entertainment club in london’. if by 'american-style' they mean big fat ugly women then they are spot on.

I'm not a strip club kinda guy

I prefer brothels, go hard or go home

im sure

if you prefer brothels you will find that your needs are well serviced in bethnal green!

bethnal green is pretty nice (dpeending where you are)

some great pubs, bars and restaurants, lots of galleries and cafes and stuff, a gorgeous park, near broadway market, columbia road and shoreditch, quite lovely really

The one time I had to do Bethnal Green

on the Central Line, 7.30am on a weekday, it was bloody crap. Not only was it impossible to get a seat (I was suprised), but I got attitude from every swine getting off the bus and piling into the narrow tube entrance.

I am so glad I don't have to get the tube anymore.

You're right re: walking distance from work Theo. I used to be able to step out of my front door and see work - I just felt perma-depressed at the weekend because I had a really shitty job.

Yes.

This is a great opportunity that you shouldn't pass up.

i in no way said that i may in fact

kill tom if he did not endorse this. :)

Mr. Hammond,

after careful consideration, I have decided not to endorse your park.

clever girl.

Uh un uh

You didn't say the magic word!

You'll all be delighted to know

That I have decided to do it!

i'm just surprised you even needed to consider it!

don't develop a coke or gambling problem, and £25k is plenty!

oh

just saw this.

welcome to the hood.

yeah..

go live with the all the other fuckers.

Better a fucker then the swine that live in fulham.

I'm angry today.

fuck off

bethal green

resident states opinion.

further pluses of living in bethnal green

the florist (its a pub, its nice)
the turkish baths (6quid ago i beleives..saunas and that)
the wild cherry cafe (awesome veggie cafe)
the salmon and ball (brilliant for england internationals or if you want a pint of bitter for a pound twenty before 4pm)
brick lane and shoreditch about 20 mins walk away
the rich mix (good little indie cinema and gallery)
globe town (to enjoy real east london locals in their natural habitat - plus the fish monger who goes there on saturdays is amazing and well cockney)

I live in Stepney Green

and get the tube from Bethnal Green into uni...and I don't really have any complaints. But I do get the Central line after the rush hour because I'm a lazy student.

Do It.

Bethnal Green is ace, lived there for 2 years-ish now and good points...
- good big (Victoria) park
- loads of ace pubs
- access to ton of a variety of shops
- easy tube (i start work at 10am, no problems for me)
- well near brick lane, liverpool st, old st etc etc

Also i think its got a sense of residential / community-ness about it which not many places in london seem to have, yet its also really easy to get anywhere. Its brilliant. I love it.

If you've seen, what we've seen

down iiiin Bethnal Green. Bang bang, it's just another nigger dead. A bang bang.

Too sexy.

Those aren't my words by the way. It's from Britain is Shit by Selfish Cunt. Just seemed appropriate for this thread.
