a 85-200mm tamron lens, wide angle tamron lens and zenit slr base unit for £20. All manual, but it's all good.
I also have a Dynax 4 (minolta), which is easy to use (first one I got), can be fully auto, fully manual or somewhere in between, and I don't think it's too pricey.
i have a canon ae-1 which is basically a big slab of metal with magic inside. will never break, produces great results with just a little knowledge and should cost around £40-50 second-hand.
an Olympus OM1N sitting about with no real use after I went digital, it's got the standard 50mm prime lens, f1.8 and also got a Vivitar 28-200mm lens, f3.5. It takes absolutely stunning pictures and is incredibly simple to use; just one ring on the front to set the shutter speed, and another ring for the aperture, oh and it's manual focus too so there's no motors to worry about. In fact the only electronics on it is the exposure meter, which just takes one small battery, and to be honest once you've got the knack of knowing what settings to use there's no real need in most situations for it. Also got a rather nice flash gun for it too, just needs a new hotshoe after I lost the current one (only about £5 off ebay).
depends how much you want to do yourself. Do you want the convenience of an autofocus SLR with built-in autowinder, or do you want to get back to the basics of photography?
I've always liked Pentax, because they've some great lenses and you can build up a decent kit for less than the equivalent Nikon setup. So... if you want all-manual, the Pentax MX is great, and nigh-on indestructible:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_MX
Or if you want multi-point autofocus, pop-up flash, autowinder, autoexposure etc the Pentax MZ-5n is excellent and uses all the same lenses as the earlier Pentax cameras:
http://www.kphoto.ru/equipment/pentax/pentax_mz5n.jpg
Also in the first category (all manual), I can fully recommend the Nikon FM cameras.
is IMO a fantastic idea; I recently picked up a Nikon F90x for £60 - it originally retailed for £400-£500+ The trend for digital means that you can get an awful lot of camera for little money on ebay.
It's fine. The beauty of film SLR is that it doesn't really matter what it costs... as long as it's clean and the shutter works, it's basically up to you to make it take good photos.
wikipedia says there are two companies making it, but one's in croatia and doesn't always have it to sell and one's in canada and it modifies other film.
in short: i don't know :(
I bought a batch from a photographic fair a few years ago & I haven't found any since. Its annoying because I have a Brownie that I loved using that takes it.
After spending probably far too much time looking at cameras on the internet and losing ebay bids due to being poor, I ended up getting one of these (Praktica MTL3) for £7.50. Amazing.
Reading up it actually seems like a decent camera, but more importantly, it's the prettiest camera ever. And it shall be filled with finest film Poundland has to offer.
you can't really go wrong with the Nikon D40, D40x or Canon EOS range. A Nikon D40 can be had for about £270. I bought one for my girlfriend last week. It's six megapixel, which is fine for prints up to A4 size.
My camera is a Sony Alpha 100, as it was the only camera I could get here in Doha. It's very good for a starter SLR, too. Still, I'd get the Nikon.
SLR digital or not digital?
I assume not digital as it's in the title. Let me find the one my mate has got. It's don.
OK this

Thanks
will have a look.
no
The Ricoh GR Digital II is not an SLR, and the EOS 40D is digital!
Manual
or automatic?
Preferably auto
but not fussed.
I'm of no help then
My knowledge of vintage cameras is pretty hot but I'm a luddite when it comes to anything new.
Recommend me a vintage one!
I'm not that bothered about it being automatic. Just nice pictures.
Rollei!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolleiflex
That's TTL not SLR though. Also I like Kodak Brownies but I'm guessing you only really want to use 35mm?
If "nice" is what yr going for you could have a look at lomography.com
i;ve got
a Nikon F55 which i think is good.
I've got a
Canon Eos500N, which does me just fine. Great lenses, lots of settings and piss easy to get really good photos out of.
I just got
a 85-200mm tamron lens, wide angle tamron lens and zenit slr base unit for £20. All manual, but it's all good.

I was looking at those Dyna 4 ones
they seem like a good option.
Cheers.
*dynax
I would go for it
mine cost me about £250 2 and a half years ago, but it's pretty sturdy/reliable and I'm very happy with it.
on most manual cameras, there will be automatic settings.
i have a canon ae-1 which is basically a big slab of metal with magic inside. will never break, produces great results with just a little knowledge and should cost around £40-50 second-hand.

Couldn't reccommend the camera enough.
This Olympus,
is indeed a fantastic camera.
Got me through night school, an a two year HNC and a degree. Absolutely bulletproof.
I you see one cheap, buy one.
Do you want proper old school manual, or just a good film slr?
For old school manual

Thanks all
i have an
olympus om-2(n)
I haven't used it much, but it is very nice. Has automatic and manual options. Mine is from the seventies (belonged to my grandad).
I reckon you could get one for about £50-£100 on ebay.. maybe less?
Buying a film SLR
is IMO a fantastic idea; I recently picked up a Nikon F90x for £60 - it originally retailed for £400-£500+ The trend for digital means that you can get an awful lot of camera for little money on ebay.
Can anyone tell me
if there's anything wrong with this?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Minolta-Dynax-4-SLR-35mm-Camera_W0QQitemZ200192192039QQihZ010QQcategoryZ15237QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I'm suspicious of its cheapness.
might be worth verifying
that it does actually come with a lens, because the listing just keeps mentioning 'interchangeable lenses'.
I'm quite shocked at how cheap most of the stuff listed under SLR is, though, so it's probably fine.
Yeah that was my worry.
But it's got a picture of the actual camera, bag, etc at the bottom and it has the lens included. It might just be badly listed.
Still seems cheap even without the lens!
I had one!
As my first camera!
It's fine. The beauty of film SLR is that it doesn't really matter what it costs... as long as it's clean and the shutter works, it's basically up to you to make it take good photos.
Cool, thanks. :)
It looks fairly easy to use, which is good because I'm stupid.
i like this thread
where can i get a good SLR camera in london for cheap? i don't use ebay.
Think the
K1000 is meant to be a good one to start out with, or so my photography tutor tells me.

Pentax
^this, definitely
mine has never let me down, and i abuse it a fair bit.
I'd recommend getting any old
chunky, totally mechanical one you can find. Just so long as the shutter works.
Otherwise, I'd recommend a Nikon, because I've got the f100 and it's lovely.
In other film camera related news, i just got a film back from my Holga and it's all crap. Sadface.
As someone else mentioned
for old cameras that clunk, I'm always lusting after an OM-1 as it was my Dad's first camera.
He claims it's the best camera he ever owned.
Crap in what way?
I forget to tape mine up on a regular basis & ruin everything.
Also on the subject of OMs
I've been using an OM4 for nearly ten years now & have never had any problems with it at all, it's perfect.
I took half the film
without realising it was on the 'bulb' setting. So all over exposed in a non-salvageable and blurry way.
Sadface. Also, strangely little vignetting
There's a couple of reasonable portraits, but it's all pretty dull. And colourless, despite being cross processed.
I love
vignetting. I just hate not being a student anymore & having to pay for 120 to be processed.
Not having a darkroom after getting used to one
worst thing ever.
Just
buy a changing bag and do the B&W stuff at home. Colour is possible but more tricky.

my newest camera:
http://www.gbcameras.org.uk/VP%20Twin/VP%20Twin%20index.htm
it fits in the palm of my hand! can't wait to take some pictures with it!
haha
it's like that spy camera that bart gets in the simpsons.
omg
a vest pocket!! they're cute. what are you going to do about 127 film?
i've lost several ebay auctions for the stuff.
wikipedia says there are two companies making it, but one's in croatia and doesn't always have it to sell and one's in canada and it modifies other film.

that's beautiful. great find!
i cannot wait to be able to afford to get into medium format photography.
aye
good work. Film cameras are so cheap, and so much fun. Wait till you start developing your own b/w pictures!
You got it on ebay?
Good work. £7.50!!! :o
I just got an IR filter through for my camera but it's too small so hopefully I can swap it for a bigger one.
NO
my camera is the prettiest camera ever

ALL MINE.
I was actually trying to get an AE1
but failed.
I'm quite excited about mine though.
na
a fly eye Polaroid, lumpy canon and a matchbox just don't compete with the weighty simple and stylish lines of the Oly.
If I could i'd get one of these http://www.pbase.com/nickdemarco/image/77430153.jpg
Thats lovely camera.
PS
Their lovely really, I like the polaroid... that big round grill does look like a fly eye tho.

I TOTALLY misread the thread title
What a 'prawn'.
I would take a picture of mine
but I've only got one camera
