I've got an old computer that doesn't work, and it's taking up valuable space in the spare room so I want to get rid of it.
Can I just take it to the tip? I heard somewhere that you can't just dump them because the hard drives need to be wiped for data-protection reasons or something? Is this nonsense? I can't find any information on my council's website.
or alternatively
is there a way I can recycle it?

but I do actually hate you MORE.
Formatting a hard drive doesn't destroy data and calling someone a 'numpty' when you're claiming to be right when you're incredibly wrong is just embarrassing.
i googled "PC recycling nottingham"
and found quite a few.
nottingham might be a bit of a hike though so i'm not really sure what to suggest?

they should have some kind of computer recycling point. where they get melted down my children india who get to inhale all the chemicals...uh...but yeah, local tip.

but it probably applies to anyone who has been using a computer to store customer details, etc.
If it's dead it can just go to the tip but I guess there might be a way to get it working and it could be shipped off somewhere. You'd have to check something like Oxfam.
I remember my housemate having this problem
he had a computer with a lot of sensitive GSK data on it. We removed the hard drive and played frisbee against a wall with it for 20 minutes. That worked.
I smashed mine to pieces with a hammer
and put it in the rubbish bin.
but i had a lot of hate for that computer. and recyling didn't even occur to me :-\

that my local dump do accept computers, they come under the term "WEEE"

I have a fully working BBC micro if anyone wants it. Had hoped it might be worth something as an antique of the future, but sadly since john connor prevented Judgement Day it has become worthless and just takes up space.
