The origin of Post-Rock

Some people point to 'Mogwai Young Team', others back to Slint. However, I believe (and have stated previously) that the true father of the post rock genre is EDGAR ALLEN POE. Check out his description of Usher (not that Usher) playing frantically on his guitar:

“I listened, as if in a dream, to the wild improvisations of his speaking guitar.”

“His long improvised dirges will ring for ever in my ears.”

“It was, perhaps, the narrow limits to which he thus confined himself upon the guitar, which gave birth, in great measure, to the fantastic character of the performances. But the fervid facility of his impromptus could not be so accounted for.”

nah

thats the origin of jazz innit

Depends if those we now consider..

...to be post rock took any influence from these passages. It certainly fits the current stylistic description of post-rock though...

Talk Talk

is where it's at.

^^^^^

Talk Talk is where its always at.

yep

talk talk = best band ever!

^

yeah i think a lot of people will point to

Spiderland, as being a seminal moment in the post rock realisation. Though Talk Talk predated even Slint and many would consider them to have really instigated the movement..

just prog innit?

Mogwai definitely provided a template for a certain type of post-rock band but I think the concept is far older.

....hey!

There is no more post-rock. Post rock is the bored rich whiteboy music of choice. This is now the default setting for middle-class band guys. Collect a bunch together and like a million monkeys hammering at a million typewriters they'll drone out an eternity of po-faced, piss-weak EITS pastiches.

A delay pedal is not depth. A delay pedal is not profundity. A delay pedal is not atmosphere.

You say that...

But have you ever used one?

They're ace.

dear sweet jesus

white people using "whiteboy" as a pejorative? please stop. it's just embarrassing.

dsj

more descriptive than pejorative. Post-rock is also a sausage party.

absolutely not

the cst collective is about 30-40% female.

You're an idiot

there's more to bands like EITS and Mogwau etc than just a delay pedal.

(though i do love mine)

Personally

I like the explanation on allmusic:

"The musical foundation for post-rock crystallized in 1991, with the release of two very different landmarks: Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and Slint's Spiderland. Laughing Stock was the culmination of Talk Talk's move away from synth-pop toward a moody, delicate fusion of ambient, jazz, and minimalist chamber music; Spiderland, meanwhile, was full of deliberate, bass-driven grooves, mumbled poetry, oblique structures, and extreme volume shifts. While those two albums would influence many future post-rock bands, the term itself didn't appear until critic Simon Reynolds coined it as a way to describe the Talk Talk-inspired ambient experiments of Bark Psychosis."

God

I fucking love all three of those bands. If only Graham Sutton made more than one record every 11 years...

DEBUSSY

or Ravel ennit

I vote Slint

i think it was

bark psychosis

what!?

it was interlol.

he did invent the detective story

Poe I mean - in the Murders in the Rue Morgue, the Purloined Letter and the Mystery of Marie Roget.

Yeah.

I love how there are two poe threads on DiS at the moment. Anyone up for a bit of H P Lovecraft chat later? Anyone?

surely the origin of post-rock

is rock, right?
