I don't know that they sound much like Jesus Lizard

I'd suggest getting 'Liar' as I have a feeling that's better than 'Goat'.

Have a gander on http://last.fm/music/the+jesus+lizard and look at who's similar.

thank you!

il have a look when i get home from work

Liar

ferrsure x

COWS!

COWS!
COWS!

Pretty similar I would say and completely ace. Go with Sexy Pee Story or Cunning Stunts if you can find them.
Also Helmet are a logical progression as they have the same sort of tight rhythmic guitar heaviness. Go with Meantime.

As for Jesus Lizard, I do think Goat is their best but Liar, Head/Pure and Bang (sort-of best of) are certainly all worth getting.

JL

One of the best bands ever... intense live show.

I second (or third) the Liar recommendation

Of newish bands you might want to try Pissed Jeans?

Hows about

Cherubs (the american one who have an album called 'Heroin Man')
Mclusky (the 3rd album)
COWS are one of the best bands of all times but I don't know if they are that similar
The Birthday Party too
Shellac
TODD

Liar is a great album too, definitely buy that!

Mclusky 2ND album.

Mclusky Do Dallas is by far the best one. Especially in this context.

scratch acid

david yow's (sory for bad spelling)first band - sound a bit more stripped down, but still as good. i just have the 'greatest hits'. you know, they were huge.

Greatest Gift?

They were huuuge though yes.

ha, i always thought it was a kind of best of

didn't do much research

i think i liked the irony of naming their album 'greatest hits'. like, what hits? but then i've actually mentally had the title wrong for years.

but they were great. but not big. if that makes sense.

isn't it ca;;ed The Greatest Gift?

or perhaps the beer has muddled my brain? It is very good though and essential for any Jesus Lizard fan, of whom there should be billions.

I'd probably say Goat edged it over Liar - the guitar work is top-notch - but yeah, you should deffo buy Liar as well. Boilermaker is some ace headbanging shit.

I dunno like

1956 and all that is about as Jesus Lizardy as they get music wise at least.

If you like The Jesus Lizard

I can see you liking The Fall (latter period..... esp Fall Heads Roll)

Also pick up The Jesus Lizard 'Blue', its a masterpiece.....

Blue?

I don't think it's one their better albums.

Shot

is still a pretty good album, worth getting if you see it cheap.

yep

worth buying just for Skull of a German

And

Thumbscrews. This album is great actually.

^

I endorse the above post.

Also check out Hammerhead and Tar

mug mug mug

what albums by them bands would you recommend please.i hate getting the "odd" song

Er

I reckon

Shellac - Terraform
TODD - Comes To Your House
Cows - Cunning Stunts
The Birthday Party - Junkyard (only one I have)

All Todd, Shellac and Cows is good really afaik.

yep

anything on AmRep really (that I have heard) should do the trick.
What would you recommend by these bands by the way and is any available? I have some Tar on tape and that's it.

Hammerhead:

Duh, the big city

Tar - Jackson.

It's well.. well, you know. It's not easy to find though. I'm not so keen on the stuff they did on touch and go, which is easier to pick up, but much poppier.

I thought you were saying

like duh, "the big city" obv

:D

natch

hammerhead are also

a NWOBHM band with some incredible artwork:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Will-Survive-Hammerhead/dp/B000IOLYSK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201103685&sr=1-1

Indeed.

I've almost bought some of that shit in error before. I think it would be quite a happy mistake though, at least until I listened to it.

pissed jeans

cows
tomahawk

husker du dont sound like them at all, but they are still one of the greatest bands of all time.

no i didnt mean JL sound like husker du

i was merely asking what husker du actually sound like.sorry for the confusion!

husker du are great, what i've heard

they do sound a bit like an amplified tinnitus, though. just imagine your tinnitus but with additional vocals

i only have 'warehouse songs and stories' but listened to this religiously for about three years of my youth.

listening to it again, not so keen, for some reason

i mean, they sound like tinnitus

not 'an' tinnitus

soz

listen to Todd as well

bit heavier than Jesus Lizard but same idea
http://www.myspace.com/toddranch

what?

warehouse is mellow as hell for them, it sounds like REM! you really wouldnt like land speed record...

Blue and Shot are both awesome

albums.......... Oh and Qui of course if you are not aware..........

KARP

OH

Good call

KARP

are wicked. Not that much like the Jesus Lizard but the self titled LP is well worth getting. Then there's Big Business too. Can of worms.

karp's

forget the minions is sort of reminiscent of the 90s chicago noise rock bands with the two note legato thingimy.

also rye coalition..

its more the of that 90s high end scuzz aesthetic that make them similar and prominant bass lines

favourite AmRep bands?

So as not to start another thread. I have just ordered some Hammerhead and Tar. Anything else I should check out? I love everything by Cows and have various bits and pieces of other bands.
Also post-Cows bands, any good?

Yeah!

Heroine Sheiks are amazing. The first album is similar to Cows but with Shannon playing noisy keyboard bits. The other two albums are almost as good and there's a new version of the band now with the old Hammerhead guitarist.

GOD BULLIES

GOD BULLIES
GOD BULLIES

early helmet (born annoying and strap it on)

Chokebore (anything near water)

Guzzard (you can pick up 'quick fast in a hurry' for dirt cheap)

Love 666 for a feedback/drug reference overdose

Today is the day (for supernova and willpower)

Supernova for pop-punk fun (not one for the amrep purists, if they exist outside of my mind)

Helios Creed if you're feeling adventurous

give me 3 of those

and I will order them, along with Heroine Sheiks first album. Turning into an expensive day.

Today is the day - Supernova

Helmet - Strap it on
God Bullies - War on Everybody

got the Helmet already

I have some Today is the Day (Temple of Morning Star I think) but I will get Supernova plus God Bullies

Their amrep records

are very different to their later releases. In a good way. But I would say that.

Second the Guzzard and Supernova

They are always on ebay for 99p.

I need more of the God Bullies + TITD. I got the TITD album with the Mastodon drummer on it but have hardly listened to it.

SLOY!!!!

God Bullies, the Cows, Flour, Penthouse, Happy Flowers, Tar & U-Men

Dazzling Killmen

Oneida

let's keep mentioning early 90's great noise bands instead !!

Girls Againt Boys

"Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby" 1993 (which has the frenzied Bulletproof cupid on it) or "Cruise Yourself" 1994.

They used to be on the tour circuit w/ JL mid '90s.

If you like the machine style rhythm

bit of the Jesus Lizard the self titled Noxagt album is worth a listen too.

There are far too many bands on this thread now.

I think everyone's mentioned most of the bands

that would make logical progressions.

I may repeat some but:

unsane, self titled and scattered, smothered and covered

nation of ulysses: 13-Point Program to Destroy America

Today is the day: clusterfuck

Oxbow: fuckfest

helmet: strap it on

us maple: Long Hair in Three Stages

Clockcleaner: Nevermind

CopshootCop:Consumer revolt and release

mclusky: do dallas

rapeman: Two Nuns and A Pack Mule

Girls against boys: cruise yourself

Six finger satellite: Law of ruins

brainiac: hissing pigs in static

Arab on Radar: Rough Day at the Orifice

Daughters: Hell Songs

Wow

a nail on head moment.

Boss Hoss and Drive Like Jehu could go on that list as well.

Giddy Motors

have a fair bit in common with the Jesus Lizard.

lizrd-a-like

there is a good little band called Wander Phantom that wear their influence quite nicely:

http://www.myspace.com/wanderphantom

i'm going to save this thread

because there are some bands here i have to check out muself!

Cant Believe..

NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THE MIGHTY =

"BIG'N"

AMAZING BAND FROM CHICAGO. 90S ROCK. YES.
