Hello. I'm making a mixtape of songs that feature cellos (and mournful violins), and could use some help. So far I've got:

The National - About Today
Nirvana - Dumb
Nick Drake - Cello Song

And that's about it off the top of my head. There are probably loads. D'you know any others that would fit the bill?

Matson Jones!

They're a fantastic band that have 2 cellists. TWO!

Holy crap

They sound like my ideal band. I remember you talking about them before actually, but totally forgot to look into them.

I can email you some mp3s if you want

just PM me a suitable email adress :-)

arthur russell- a little lost

Cello-tastic, and the best love song i've ever heard.

^^^

I LOVE Matson Jones, they deserve to be massive.

on the rough trade compilation

2006 - I liked what I heard but couldn't find much about them anywhere.

That's how I heard them as well :-)

They have an EP and an album, but neither seem to have had a UK release. I bought them both on import through my local friendly independant record shop. Bless 'em.

any good?

i know no cello songs off the top of my head.

Hawk and a hacksaw have a cellist, i don't endorse them though.

...

The entirety of Cursive's Ugly Organ album?

Long Forgotten by Oceansize?

That string section band that cover Metallica tunes?

^

The Ugly Organ and Burst And Bloom.

apocalyptica

i think they were called

smart went crazy

stuff like Good Day

fugazi - epic problem. or cashout. i think.

Car

by Built to Spill.

And Views by Audrey.

i second car

also anything by arthur russell.
and:
chris garneau - relief
ohbijou - widths and curves
flowers from the man who shot your cousin - lay down your arms
azure ray - november
king creosote - the vice-like gist of it
the national - val jester
stars - your ex-lover is dead
nina nastasia - underground
headlights - your old street

some of those are possibly just deep-sounding violins though, i find it difficult to tell the difference.

mogwai

christmas song

It's called 'Christmas Steps'

Great song.

anything by Picastro

and doesn't All Apologies have a cello?

Yeah

but I've never really liked All Apologies.

Your ex lover is dead by Stars

i think it's a cello anyway.

Kristin Hersh

did an ep of songs all awash with cellos, and strings. it was called Strings.

Velvet Underground used them.

Therapy? covered Diane with an amazing cello section.

something by rachel's?

'you dont know me' by Apparat
'Wishful thinking' by The album leaf
'Andvari' by sigur ros (the end especially)

..

Hope of the States? New Rhodes have a great Cello song at the end of their album. How about Richard Hawley? Doesn't he have some sad strings-type things?

Bachs cello suites....

is amazing!!!!!

...

I'd say Elgar's Cello Concerto is about as good as it gets on the classical front.

Diane

by Therapy?

didn't Bjork do an album with only a string section and drum machine-y electronica too?

^^ Therapy?

They used to have a live cellist on loads of songs. It were awesome.

also

I'm fairly sure Youthmovies' Ores has a cello on it, as I'm in a band with the cellist in question.

anything by

Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Most songs by Lionshare

'Mexico City is Sinking' by YouMeTheSwitch
Enjoy

One More Mile - Tom McRae

also, pendantically, it's 'Cello.

^this

Murder By Death

They've got a Cello player. Listen to 'Intergalactic Menopause' or 'Boy Decide'. In fact, listen to any one of their songs. They're all great.

Always helpful:

Buried Inside - Racking The Skulls Of American Golgatha

Asunder - Rite of Finality

You didn't specifically state that there wasn't allowed to be any screaming or that songs had to be under 50 minutes in length, so you still owe me.

Thanks!

Cheers everyone

This is good stuff.

as others have said,

Therapy?

the specific album they use it on nearly every song is Infernal Love.

there's a fair bit of it in the Afghan Whigs Black Love record too

Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires

Viola, but that's in the right ball park I'm guessing. The Libertine, something like that?

matt pond PA..

..,besides being one of most under-appreciated bands of the past decade, have always had a cello thing going on. It's got slightly less prominent on the last couple of albums (7, check 'em all) but its still there...
