and
Chris Garneau - Music For Tourists

Definately the Album leaf

also
Raz Ohara and the Odd Orchestra.. really nice

I agree with Jose Gonzalez

and not in a bad way.

One of my favourites

and not an entirely obvious one is Rain Dogs by Tom Waits. Always seems to work.

ditto Takk

and Nick Drake. Azure Ray is good too.

I listen to loads of ambient stuff

William Basinski is the best. Somehow he manages to make nothing at all sound absolutely amazing for about 60 minutes at a time.

I've been listening to Brian Eno - 'Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks' quite a bit recently. It's very nice.

Oh! It's not really an album to 'fall asleep to'

but more an album to sit and listen to when you should be sleeping..
Forest City Lovers - The Sun and the Wind

mmm

Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds Of...
Message to Bears - EP1
Ólafur Arnalds - Eulogy for Evolution
Gregor Samsa - 52:12

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock

...beautiful dreamy music.

:)

True but

anyone who does actually fall asleep mid-way through it on my watch is in serious risk of a stabbing.

The correct reaction is of course to be completely enraptured into inactivity by the album's sheer beauty.

um

i like
bright eyes
death cab
mogwai
band of horses
beirut

Aye,

band of horses is another good un

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2

An album thats so closely connected to the weather can't help but lull you into the most fantastically vivid kind of sleep.

That or Slayer.

^^ indeed

I wasn't suggesting that it's 'boring' at all. In fact, I'd wager it as one of my favourite records.

every

spiritualized album...

and

lambchop's is a woman has been guiding me to that sweet land of sleepyness recently

even ladies and gentlemen and amazing grace?

both of which wake me up as they're so epic

The Verve - Urban Hymns

Not because it's a particularly relaxing album, more because it appears to be so monumentally dull that I've never managed to stay awake from start to finish.

For actual drift off music I revert to classical stuff or maybe Sigur Ros, Liars (Drums Not Dead), or even Isis is good if it's not played too loud.

the first half of

Endtroducing..
any Sigur Ros
Boards Of Cannada

fuck albums.

the playlist i'm making for sleep tonight:

1. xiu xiu - clowne towne
2. apreludes (in c sharp major) - stars of the lid
3. the moon (song islands version) - the microphones
4. america - before the war - steve reich
5. dance 1 - philip glass
6. i will not forget that i have forgotten - eluvium
7. (that's how you sing) amazing grace - low
8. epitaph for my heart - the magnetic fields

shit yeah

completely forgot about Eluvium

i fell asleep

to that Eluvium album you gave me last night. It was wonderful, it was like being enveloped in a fuzzy globe of sound.

The most frustrating thing about making playlists to go to sleep to is that you get disappointed if you miss the last few songs through being asleep, but you're also annoyed if you're not asleep by the end of it. It's a fine line.

i'll envelop your fuzzy globe of sound

i neatly sidestepped the issue of not sleeping/missing some badass magnetic fields action by leaving clowne towne on repeat by accident. i feel a little fragile now.

I favour

Akron/Family
Magnolia Electric Co.
M. Ward
The Microphones
Snooks Eaglin

Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place

is the only thing I can fall asleep to. Everything else I dissect so as a consequence, can't ever listen to music when I want to fall asleep.

i can never fall asleep when listening to music

apart from if i doze off during the day

when it's involved in my "going to bed" routine i just can't do it. I either become too involved in the music playing, or not involved enough (and so i start to think about all the things that tend to keep me awake).

So no, i can only fall asleep to unengaging TV shows (silence is not an option). And right now, the only way i can achieve that is by having the a shitty late-period Simpsons episode playing on the laptop..

System of a down

tool
gallows

Anything soothingly ambient really

That or quiet post-rock stuff or something folky.

Pan American
Yagya
Deadbeat
July Skies
Epic45
Deepchord
1 Mile North
Nick Drake
Edith Frost
Barzin

I have a whole playlist comprising of ambient/minimal music i downloaded from epitonic.com (remember them?) years ago which i still put on when i'm trying to sleep.

Some of my fave sleepies:

Labradford
Stars Of The Lid
Opsvik & Jennings
Sk/um
Aerial M
Efterklang
Hanne Hukkelberg
Yann Tiersen
Max Richter
Rachel's
The Books

This thread just made me realise

that i've never actually heard a Stars Of The Lid album in its entirety. I only ever put them on when i want to sleep.
