Burly doom-mongering outfit Om have announced that drummer Chris Hakius has disbanded from the former Sleeper noiseniks.

Weeping though was short-lived as former partner Al Cisneros posted this bulletin on their website earlier announcing that Om will valiantly continue on and took the opportunity to reveal that one last hoorah of the pair in happier times is forthcoming:

“Om is continuing forward with a new drummer and working on a new recording. Please check omvibratory.com and the band`s MySpace page for updates. A live vinyl only LP, Om - Live at Jerusalem, will be forthcoming. This is Chris Hakius` final release with the group.

I personally apologize to east coast fans who planned on coming out to the shows. Please know that Om will be back in your area later in `08.

Thank you to all of you. Live dates resume in late spring. There is a LOT of new material on its way.

Shrinebuilder is also forging ahead.

See you all soon.”

However. Om’s live dates, including one at with Current 93 and Baby Dee at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on April 21, have been pulled with Head Heritage releasing this statement regarding their future live activity:

“Om have regretfully had to pull out of the Roadburn/QEH shows that they were playing with Current 93 due to he sudden and unexpected departure of Om's drummer, Chris Hakius, from the group. Al Cisneros of Om and David Tibet of Current 93 are very saddened to announce this, but it was beyond their control.”

And so, what better way to welcome in the weekend than an Om video montage:

Oh fuck, we meant this one:

BOOKAH!

Bit slow on the uptake DiS

aaah well.

By slow you mean

'really busy, really too busy, to spare too much time to cover a band that 2% of our readership is interested in, but we'll get there eventually, to make sure that 2% are informed, in case they don't get the same mail-outs we do from the band's label, that way everyone's happy, yeah, and we can go home with a warm feeling in our tummies'?

You did? Good man.

Niiiiiiiiice videos sir

I thought it was going to be one of Dave Lister's band doing that 'Om' song on Red Dwarf. But P-Funk is way better. Good weekend.

Enough time for this:

http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2878377

but not to tell us that a band was as good as splitting up? Youve become your own worst NME.

I'm going to the punderworld for that.

The punderworld welcomes you...

...we're all members here.

Well I didn't know

and I'm a bit gutted. Glad I got to see them when they were playing together.

Me too

Glad I saw them at ATP - was so looking forward to the QEH show.
Pah.

the position of a journalist should be that of neutral

Bit of a silly response.

If there were more news on random obscure bands and a bit less on those that are spammed across all the other uk based pubs, there may be more to come back for.

ah, I can't even be bothered to argue today. I'm going to watch Swazee ruin King Solomon's Mine on E4+1, at least then I will be keeping with the theme of viewing a repeat.

It's all about balance.

We see who is reading what, what artists are attracting the most traffic, etc.

I like OM. We were always going to report this. But during the working day when people are at their desks and browsing without any real direction, stories on 'known' bands quite evidently attract more wandering eyes... from that toe in the door, who knows what other bands they'll be reading about? Hopefully some of the more exciting, below-the-radar outfits that so many of the staffers and regular messageboard users care about.

Fact: posting a news piece on a 'random obscure band' is very unlikely to attract much interest. Putting a piece up on an obscure act amongst articles on better-known bands will hopefully encourage more people to look at it.

Believe me when I tell you I'm often torn between what I love and what I know; I know that very few readers give a (whatever) about Enablers, or Cadence Weapon, or Munch Munch, or Beestung Lips; but by talking about these bands alongside your Foals, Hots Chips, ADELES, we're (I'd like to think) putting them in some sort of context - if we're up for writing about these bands you like, perhaps you'll enjoy these, too.

As an aside, if any readers do have any questions they'd like to ask me about the coverage of particular bands - perhaps it's time we were giving This Town Needs Guns (or any other decent act of the same profile level) a news story every time they tour? - just drop me a note. I won't bullshit you. I'm quite happy to promote transparency here. Which is why it amuses/frustrates when someone posts that we're covering Adele because the label has paid for it!? Ridiculous, and false.

Although if XL would be so kind as to send me a cheque it'd be super appreciated, thanks.

:-(

that's a pity: OM were one of the best bands at ATP and all three LPs to date are most majestic

for what it's worth, i get press releases from Southern and this had slipped my attention - too many emails to track! - so i was glad that DiS reported it

shame

they were the best thing at Supersonic last year. Incidentally, the Jerusalem show clocked in at 5 hours.
