this album is genuinelly stunning, however i don't think she'll get the attention she deserves. shine and your only doll (dora)are brilliant songs. anyone else got it?

No.
Is there a way to buy the cd on it's own without the whole songbox malarkey?
Yes
sure there is, theresa CD version and this SongBox version available, the latter includes a gig ticket (well, a code to claim one) for her tour in March. and apparently there'll be no other way, conventional way of getting them..
and Yes
I love Laura and her songwriting.. saw her @ Soho Revue Bar last Friday, she was really really good..
Ah yes,
I should have looked a bit harder really. Looks like it's not out until monday though.
...
I can't decide what I love more about this girl; the lyrics about boyz laid over four chords or... whatever else there is.
well
actually it was her live performance that impressed me (didnt/couldnt get that impression from her live videos on YouTube, Jools Holland ones are good tho).. how vocally varied she can be to add different twists to her songs..
...
Indeed. If Lily Allen taught us anything is that glottal stops can take the place of any traditionally articulated note. They are the -izzle of music.
I'm not sure what to make of her
I went up against her in a demos competition on BBC Radio Berkshire. We both lost.
all the stuff I've heard from
the EPs and singles have been pretty good. The album arrived today. About to listen and find out...
i prefer the earlier stuff
</indie>
but seriously, this album is very unremarkable from the first three listens. i'll give it a couple more chances but the demos from a couple of years ago had so much promise, i probably had my hopes too high.
..
would probably agree.. but then again I've only streamed it on her website.. have just ordered SongBox version
Wait... what?
You DON'T think she'll get the attention she deserves? What world are you even living in?
^ And that's without even questioning why you like her at all
my mistake
i mean to say i want her to get attention when Adele gets far more recognition than i think she deserves. has that very badly answered your question.
Haha yeah
well Laura Marling is clearly > than Adele but then again Laura Marling is also a real human being and not a robot designed by the music industry. Either way, she'll definitely get plenty of attention, being quite accessible and pretty. She is not one of the many acts right now the world needs to fret too much over being ignored.
i went to school with her
maybe this is the root of my utter contempt for her music. it's the zeitgeist as defined by observer music monthly.
btw..
I got it wrong with this ticket thingy, it's actually a physical ticket that comes along and some ubercool techie thing that follows..
The concert ticket will be printed with a unique code allowing the fan to register online at lauramarling.com to gain access to the nearest of five concerts which will take place in March:

the london date
is actually at the union chapel in islington
* crys of 'thank the lord' ring around the capital *
of course she'll get the attention she deserves
regardless of how you percieve her music she is already pretty much guaranteed a lifelong career making music...
huge target market who are going to mature with her, genuine talent, a real personality, good looks, a label who care... there is really little that can go wrong.
i can't believe
it doesn't have New Romantic on. It's her best song by miles!
...
btw, I have this re-recorded version, with a Cockney accent.. well, I think it's DiS interview with her where she mentioned that New Romantic wouldnt be on her debut..
i was really
looking forward to this on the strength of my manic and i and night terror but on first listen these two songs seem to be the only ones i like. it all sounds pretty bland.
night terror was free on itunes
the problem i have with her is that the lack of life experience shows. That lack shows up in the lyrics which seem utterly hollow and the voice is all very pretty, quaint and British but there's no resonance to it, the words don't linger in your head. When there are so many other choices out there of singer songwriters, I struggle to see why she's being hyped. I can only conclude it's because she's British and the Americans and Canadians have the monopoly on the genre.
c'mon
she's just 18...
y'know i saw a pitchfork review of beirut
where they blasted his lyrics for being hollow and showing a lack of maturity and depth but It still got a great review (Gulag Orkestar) because the scope of that album is amazing and the instrumentation faultless in my eyes. Sure the lyrics aren't profound or greatly affecting but i'm prepared to go with the songs because the atmosphere condon creates takes you on a journey and i'm there with every line and horn blast. A S/S needs to at least give me that. All i'm seeing with these British girl singers is a sameyness that has me recoiling. I couldn't find a single thing to like about marling's songs bar the mildly pretty voice. The only female singer songwriter I'm remotely impressed by from the u.k right now is Bats For Lashes and I like True Adventures to but we're friends. Interestingly she has a similar background to LM in that her dad has always been involved in music and has a home studio, she's just older and 1 million times more interesting.
I see what you're saying about the age thing but not sure that can be a valid excuse for producing a song as lyrically bereft as Night Terrors. Just an opinion.
I think she'll get attention here
I like the album, a lot. It's been on a fair bit in the office.
I think I prefer her
in Noah and the Whale. Ghosts is a nice song though.
is it just me?
or she does sound like Nancy Sinatra on "The Captain And Hourglass" track?... bang bang my baby shot me down.. oh, whatever.. anyway, it's a lovely track!
oops..
*shot* my baby down...
Captain & the hour glass
is a real haunting song, with the feel of a march running throughout it. i love it, and have had it on repeat all morning. alas I cannnot swim is an amazing debut album from Laura. I have my songbox and will definitely be making the most of my free ticket! Cross your fingers is also one of my favourites, the way it runs into number 7, I love!
