I'm in one of these now (it was a four piece until Friday).
None of us are particularly shit-hot musicians (although two of us are multi-instrumentalists...ish) so going down a Dirty 3 route is pretty much out of the question, but I want to do something more interesting than just knocking out pop/punk stuff.
Anyone got any suggestions, or recommendations of bands to shamelessly rip off?
Sugababes
yeah
Lift To Experience...
If three people can make that noise, then you should be able to do pretty much anything...
The Enemy
are doing alright.
Noise is good
Man, I just replied to your other thread.
I'll post that here too...
3-Piece is better, I reckon
We shameless rip off:
Sonic Youth
Shellac
mclusky
Nirvana
Wire
Tortoise
The Fall
Whenever we can.
Why do you need a new direction?
Because we used to be indie-pop LOLs
(www.myspace.com/theyouthclub), but our guitarist spat the dummy. We've been finding our sound a bit restrictive, and he wasn't too pleased with our attempts to experiment (one of the reasons he fucked off I think).
You'd only just recorded stuff, hadn't you?
That sucks, but plenty of people have already pointed out plenty of good 3 piece reference points.
Just don't become Klaxons
Yep
We're putting the four-piece guitar fun on hold until a suitable guitarist presents himself, but we want to do stuff in the meantime.
NEW DIRECTION/NUDE ERECTION etc
Go Afro-Beat
OXES
Metronomy
Aw, that does NOT ROCK
who left?
Guitar boy (^ see up there)
Nada Surf
I posted that somewhere else too...
Busted
?????
klaxons?
That's not too bad then
if you'd lost your drummer you'd be pretty fucked! From the stuff of your's I've heard you're pretty dramatic and you've got a good enough voice to carry songs that are just drums and bass, so maybe you could get a keyboard and try to be really minimal? Either that or get a second drumkit and a sampler and become a monster party band.
I'm thinking minimal
Our drummer is an excellent blues guitarist and can play a bit of violin. I can deputise on drums and keyboards and theremin. Our bassist can play bass. I'm thinking some kind of minimalist, instrument swapping shennanigans. First practice tonight, so we'll see....
late q and not u
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
even though "no kill no beep beep" is my favourite. but that^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sleater-Kinney
obviously.
McLusky/Future of the Left as well.
Lords are also only a 3 piece and make an epic amount of noise.
S*M*A*S*H
I'm always confused that bands with 3 people seem to make a lot more noise then ones with 4 or 5. I don't see why any band needs more than 3.
Transplants
Dum Dums
covers band.
early qotsa?
does that count? when it just seemed to be homme, oliveri and that hernandes (?) fellow as the core members?
.
Biffy Clyro
Reuben
The Xcerts
Mad Capsule Markets
None of you have mentioned The Minutemen
You are all stupid.
go electronica...
become the new autechre with a man spare. y'know, in case of emergencies. or maybe if someone's busy the other can fill in.
The Stereophonics or Dodgy?
:)
hehe!
easier to get going
stick with 3 write as if ur 4, then pull in a 'im a great guitarist' guy. you know the ones that can play satriani but couldnt write a 4 chord song that worked.
Beastie Boys
