They've been commercially acclaimed and you just don't get 'em. Everyone them. Mine is Radiohead. I've tried. Fuck knows I've tried. Maybe everyone should tell me they hate them and I'd get on better. I've also failed with Arab Strap.

Anyone got any others???

Die Plankton?

Mogwai

Like background noise, only louder

Try

listening to Glasgow Mega-Snake.

Vroom

Mega-Snake is Mogwai at its best on its weakest record. You need to see them live, or buy the EP+ cd which includes some of their early - ish singles and EPS. Its all about them live. Its all about them live.

Shhh!

Having never managed to succeed in seeing the 'Gwai live, I tend to find they're best experienced through listening to Come On Die Young on headphones in the dark before bed.

Re: Mogwai

SEE THEM LIVE! If its the last thing you do.

Very much in agreement with MEGAtron (i feel silly writing that..) its all about them live!

Arctic Monkeys

but I sense I'm not alone in that camp. Also, of late, struggling to get into Vampire Weekend, bad person?

I didn't care about Arctic Monkeys

then I saw them live, and it all changed.

Vampire Weekend are the definition of hit and miss, imo.

I'm OK, You're OK

Arctics are a dying breed

radiohead

i like them a bit but a lot of my friends LOVE them and i feel like there must be something wrong with me for not 'getting' it

^

Do you think its our friends fault we don't like them?

so many bands...

that i uncharitably refer to as 'rubbish' but if i'm honest i just don't get, that i feel pressured to love:
radiohead
led zeppelin
primal scream
massive attack
neutral bastard milk cocking hotel (ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! I'LL LISTEN TO IT!!)
Arctic Monkeys
Fuck Buttons
Vampire Weekend....
the arab strap thing though - sorry man, you're on yr own!love the strap!
xm

massive attack

seconded

Radiohead defo

and you will know us.....

broken social scene

the sex pistols

smashing pumpkins

cap n'jazz... actually ive never even heard them

sex pistols are pretty shitty

unless you buy into that whole THEY CHANGED THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD FOREVER thing i'm sure of it.

Yes!

Gah!!

Totally with you on the Massive Attack thing

Love a small amount of their songs, find the majority dull.

Case in point

On 100th Window; 1 Sinead O'Conner song would have done. Love the trippy stuff though.

trail of dead

are mind bogglingly brilliant, what's not to get?

:(

boring

live, thought aren't they?

I despise

The Sex Pistols. There's at least 10 better punk bands, yet so many people hold them up as the definitive thing :/

"Maybe everyone should tell me they hate them and I'd get on better."

Have you not seen that other thread today?

^

Nah, some of us work mate! LOL. Besides, I had the thought first...

Oh, I thought you meant the Neutral Milk Hotel one

that one was seriously defective.

I thought both were seriously lame.

Defective indeed.

Judging by this thread at least

its my new favourite word.

Either way, yeah, the Aeroplane one especially was like the world had gone completely wrong.

^ This

honestly, its more than a little defective that you would be so desperate to be different your subconscious would decide not to like a band to compensate.

^

Aye, or it could be a latent teenage thing.

Liars

I saw them live and they just sounded like one big drone. Though i dont mind 'Plastic Casts Of Everything'.

Also The Smiths and Bjork

oh and

art brut - you have to be joking.

agreed with liars

saw them live - gave me a headache.

everyone's into MGMT now and aside from 1 song, i just don't like them.

to be fair

alot of liars songs are droney sounding, but that's a good thing, right?

the smiths

he stone roses
joy division
radiohead

*the

i thought everyone hated the stone roses

everyone decent anyway

does that make me

indecent?

five

seperate mentions of radiohead so far. we could form a rebel alliance of some kind...

I don't get this at all

Who are these people putting you under pressure and telling you to like certain bands?!?! Man up?

If we all liked the same thing, we'd be a right sorry bunch of sadsacks. There's nobody i feel pressured to like by anybody, if a song doesn't go in my ear and tickle my brain, it's for the scrap heap.

i think he means more

bands you feel you should like but don't... kind of thing.

Pretty much all been mentioned already...

Foals (Sorry to mention them again. I thought they were alright to begin with but now they just get on my nerves)
Vampire Weekend
Trail of Dead (they're ok but...)
Los Campesinos (but they're slowly growing on me)
Arab Strap
Joy Division
Primal Scream (they're just shit)
Amy Winehouse/Duffy/Adele
Hot Chip (a few good tunes but on the whole pretty boring)
CSS (plain terrible)
Glasvegas

Some more will doubtless be around who I can't think of at the moment.

So, what your saying is

that, at some point in your life (recently), you've come under "pressure" to enjoy the music of Amy Winehouse?

Or are people just listing bands they don't like? What a weird thread.

Well, maybe pressure wasn't the right word to use in connection with Winehouse

I've just never understood the fuss in the press etc. She sounds like a dying giraffe/cat to me.

los campesinos?!

how can anybody not love los campesinos..

joanna newsom was mine i guess

As for Los Camp,

they're music just annoys me. I like the general attitude they seem to have in international tweecore, but I just don't think the music sounds very interesting most of the time. It just struggles to really strike a chord with me.

I miss myfirstmine

I used to love it when people criticised Los Camps then realized he was reading and then quickly backstepped into hypocritical oblivion.

lol@themwhobacktracked.co.uk

That's just stupid.

Joanna Newsom?!

how can anybody not love joanna newsom..

And so the game continues.

joanna newsom

makes me want to sick up in my mouth.

Sing properly or not at all!

you lose.

amazing voice, love the harp and brass

but the string arrangements are awful and so unneccesary.

the first time i heard joanna newsom

I thought anyone who actually claimed to like her must just be completely pretentious. And then I started to like her, so I don't know what that says about me.

agree with most of that

apart from joy division and primal scream

i'm not under pressure

to like any bands...

there are lots of successful/acclaimed bands that i don't like though.

Maccabees

My best mate goes through these phases of loving bands and things that I will too, just because I like more bands than he does.

Recently its (the?) Maccabees, just doesn't do anything for me.

Can your friend's band(s) count?
I really like most of my friends bands but one, thye do some really crazy things, in theory I should like it. Then when I hear a new song by them, I just can't force it. Maybe they're trying to be too complicated.

Me too.

I even got dragged to see them live by an ex-girlfriend last year. I really didn't get it.

hahaharold..

has a fairly good point, though it's down to semantics. i guess these aren't really bands anyone is 'pressured' to like per se, more that people give you 'that look' when you mention you dislike them.
now actual REAL pressure comes with mate's bands - what's everyone's take on telling their friends' bands they are actually toss?

I've never

told my friends' bands that any of them are toss. Fortunately I genuinely like the songs anyway, but one of my closet friends is in a killers-esque pop band who run hot and cold. I happily tell him when I think they write a song that sucks and he doesn't mind, but we're close enough to be that honest. I think I'd struggle to be that honest with somebody I wasn't massively close with but I think tact and politeness can be useful tools in that situation. A gentle "nah man, play whatever makes you happy, it's not my cup of tea but there's more people out there" kind of approach would probably be the best course of action. I guess I'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU

?????????????????????

I'm finding this thread a bit weird

I agree there are bands it's harder to say that you don't like, BUT surely that only applies to great monoliths like Radiohead or the Beatles.

Would anyone really feel under pressure to like the Foals? I mean, they don't exactly have a track record.

After ages of trying

I still can't get into Explosions In The Sky, Radiohead, or Fugazi. I always think, 'well I might as well give them another try', and after a few songs I just think 'there's definitely something else I'd rather be listening to right now', which is surely the sign of a pretty mediocre band. I don't feel that much pressure though, I just value my friends' opinions, but it seems they are sometimes just wrong haha.

^ Ban request

...apart from the Radiohead bit which is fair enough.

I've always felt I "should" like riot grrrl

due to my fondness for spiky lady music, but I've tried to listen to Bikini Kill et al and I just can't. They sound like Alanis Morissette having her hair pulled.

each to their own

but you have gone wrong

^

THIS IS THE TYPE OF THING I MEAN!! Y

Bah, hit the return key there by mistake!

THIS IS THE TYPE OF THING I MEAN!! You get recommended critically acclaimed bands by people whose music taste you otherwise respect, and then just don't get it. So many people's mouths have dropped open when I've said I don't like radiohead, yet I suppose I do listen to bands that are supposedly influenced by them!

Its not just music - I cannae get Apocalypse Now either....

Just wondered if anyone else had any interesting ones - mainly because I should be working on a job application right now and this kinda conversation is always much more interesting!!

Day of Hard

Painbow
Alone Throne
Tri-Tan
Andrew Cream

Neutral Milk Hotel

CSS, Foals, Los Campesinos, Arctic Monkeys, Ian Brown, Klaxons, Hot Chip, These New Puritians, Best Fwends, The Ghost Frequency.

The Beatles

yeah

^

Don't quite get all the fuss of the Beatles either. Or Oasis.

I have been told

that I shouldn't be allowed to listen to music because I dislike the beatles. Bullshit. Also, Neutral Milk Hotel = dire.

sure

...

Revolver is aces!

And The White Album! And Magical Mystery Tour! The harmonies!!!

Battles

Pixies

Pavement

Eugene McGuinness.

Though I might get all scally if someone forced me to listen to any of the above. And yes, I have seen battles live and no I didnt hear the fucking light.

Do you really feel under pressure to like stuff?

Or is it just stuff you don't particuarly like that has critical acclaim or whatever?

^

Its more critical acclaim and your mates championing bands and you've tried to like them but failed.

Hot Chip are really boring.

Over and Over is their only decent tune, I couldn't believe how dull that album was.

Okay I admit

I haven't heard their new record.

hotchip

new album is good 1st listen

I don't like

a lot of bands I "should" and like a lot of bands I "shouldn't"...

Bands I don't like:

Joy Division
The Clash
The Sex Pistols
The Smiths
The Stone Roses

Bands I do like:

Fountains of Wayne
Abba
A Belinda Carlisle
Blind Melon
The Fratellis

How queer.

That's

'A' and Belinda Carlisle, not one Belinda Carlisle by the way...

zzz

Radiohead, I agree with.
Muse.
The Strokes.
Bloc Party.
The Bronx.

you either like a band or you don't.

no, there is no inbetween.
no, no one else cares who you do and don't like.
and no, your opinion should never be influenced by outside factors.

sorry to sound like traynor, but this is a fucking stupid thread and i feel sorry for anyone who's replied seriously.

^seconded

There is no right or wrong about it...if you don't like a band, big fucking deal. No-one should care, especially you.

seconded

this whole thing is retarded

or thirded

looks like i am the spaz after all
