fender jaguars? (guitar advice-centric)

i've been saving money and fancy buying a new guitar - specifically a jaguar, which i've lusted after for years.

anyone play one? anyone love them? anyone hate them? what makes you love/hate them?

i have a telecaster at the moment, and in an interview johnny marr said playing a telecaster is like playing a piece of paper (something about it being light?), but with a jaguar, it feels like bits can move or fall off (?). is this true?

so, basically: should i get one, or should i get something else? what would you recommend? blah blah blah

I love them

I have lusted for one too,the sound they give off is just meltworthy..*thinks of MBV and SY*

god, i know

my infatuation is mostly due to dinosaur jr. i just want to lose myself in a wall of distorted, feedbacking jaguar sound

they are a dirty guitar

filth on occasion

I've actually pondered this as well

though I'd happily stick with my Telecaster.

my friend has one

and has had a lot of issues, especially with feedback. im not entirely sure what other problems hes had but there were more. i can ask if you like. ill PM you with results@@@::!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, pls!

thnx! :D

yes

they feedback quite easily and uncontrollably because of the large amount of treble, and there can also be feedback problems with the metal "combs" on the outside of the pickups.

oh yeah, amps too

what amps do they sound best with?

this thread is turning quite expensive, i can feel...

fender twin + outboard fender reverb unit ideally

sadly I will never be able to afford that

:0

wrong! wrong! wrong!

oh wait Im stupid

I read jaguar being in front and got confused

Denmark Street.

Play away.

my 2 cents

Playability wise the telecaster is far superior. The floating bridge on Jaguars can give you problems and they always go out of tune...With FX and that i think they sound great but if you're more of a bare-boned, warm clean sounds person definitely stick to your tele.

I disagree

although that's partly because the short scale length on the Jag (24" as compared to 25.5") means I find it easier to play with my diminutive fingers. But the other more general problem is that the Telecaster is very "neck-heavy" which I found made it quite awkward to play.

also

I quite like the clean sound, for that spy-theme/spaghetti Western plinkiness.

the tremelo system is one of the most stable around

when set up properly, the main problem with the bridge are string slipping but when properly set up or swapped with a mustang bridge there are no problems

I play one

and love it, but it's not for everyone. First, the tone is quite trebly (though not as much as a Tele) which some people don't like, and it's not got much sustain due to the short scale and low bridge angle. The thing with bits falling off is the bridge, which is definitely an acquired taste - essentially the bridge isn't fixed to the guitar but is just held in place by the strings. I've had mine locked down as I found it went out of tune too easily, but for some people it's a feature.

they look amazing

but jazzmasters are better (and what dinosaur jr, sonic youth, mbv mainly use over jags)Jags have slightly shorter necks, thin pickups giving them a kind of plinky sound, Jazzmasters are amazing they can go from the most bright trashy sound to warm organ like tones with everything inbetween, in conclusion jazzmaster>jaguars

i agree

jazzmaster ftw.

this

our guitarist uses a Jazzmaster through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and we've constantly been compared to Sonic Youth despite none of us not really being into anything that Shoegazey (ok, he likes My Bloody Valentine and i own the Early Years album but that doesnt really count)

here for yourself: www.myspace.com/thesleepwells

it really depends what you're going for. I play a Telecaster and its quite versitle. Its got that indie twang but can be noisy (requires loads of gain = distortion + overdrive) but i'm also turning into a 'folk' musician as its got a really warm tone through a nice amp

sorry

i'm drunk and missed the bit where you said you have a tele.

I've got a jaguar

and there are a fair few problems. The bridge is rubbish both going lower and the bits to hold on the strings, it has a constant buzz. Can't think of anything else at the mo. Still, looks ace.

I love them

but mainly for aesthetic reasons (like all those short scale ones like musicmasters, mustangs etc). They have a kind of thin sound, but some bands seem to really get make them work for them. Think jazzmasters are often favoured for their double coils and therefore slightly lusher sound.

Jazzmasters don't have double-coil pickups

it's just a thicker wound single-coil. In fact most of the new ones just have a Strat pickup inside the case, and if you do buy a Jazzmaster I'd recommend you replace the pickups.

I stand corrected

I'm not big on the technical side of things.

Cool guitars...

But if I were you I'd stick to your tele or perhaps get a Jazzmaster. The scale length on Jaguar is quite a bit shorter than a strat/tele/jazzmaster and you'll notice the difference. They're a totally different feeling and playing guitar than a telecaster too.

What kind of music do you play? If you're into Smiths, which you sound like you are then any Fender with single coils will give you the right kind of tones.

If you really want something with the offset Fender body shape, go for a Jazzmaster. Same scale length, which will feel a lot more familiar to you after playing a tele. But hey, give all of them ago, this is just my personal opinion. All Fenders are cool.

Nice guitars

I have owned one.

Re the bridge issues the simple way to deal with this is by replacing it with a mustang bridge as they are the same radius but the saddles hold the string.

Also due to the guitar being a shortscale its advised to use a heavier gauge string, most people go for 11's.

Pick up feedback - well if you buy a jap reissue then the pups are not wax potted - which is fine unless you use a full on metal distorion, remember these guitar were brought out in the early 60's so were not originally designed for it.

Seymour Duncan produce execellant 'contemporay' pups for these guitars.

oops

it appears while I was replying thingsthatfly read my mind, right down to the exzact bands i was thinking of. Jazzmaster is J Mascis' weapon of choice for noodling all the way through whole albums.

he has his own signature one

http://www.google.co.uk/products?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4EGLC_en___GB258&q=j+mascis+jazzmaster&um=1

I wouldnt get it though, the average japanese ones are better, made of alder instead of basswood and have the correct radius neck

I wouldnt know

about neck radii, but the very idea of signature guitars is a bit silly if you ask me. Makes me think of kids playing Tom Delonge strats or some well dodgy slipknot monstrosity. doesnt really fit with dinosaur type music which is more about finding some piece of junk and making your own noise.

oops

exzact !!?

My tuppence

I used to play a Jag, it was a stunning instrument, all green and Sonic Youth-y, but it just didn't feel like it could hack it when I played with any real feeling... It IS treble heavy, but it's a surf guitar. Get a Jazzmaster or try some of the top end Burns guitars as these are superb.

As for amps, I just got a Silverface Fender Bassman head, and a cab from Matamp. Cost about the same as a nice combo and sounds IMMENSE when clean and loud. Any Fender amp + Fender guitar = clean tone heaven.

fender amp + fender guitar = clean tone heaven

this is the truth.

THE truth.

On Jaaaazzmasters

I got one involving a swap deal, a synth, burglary and woods.

I love it- though to get the best out of it you'll need to spend some time setting it up- same goes for Jaguars.

The floating tremelo needs to be calibrated to your preferred string guage- worse come to worse you can glue it shut. It's dead useful when it works though, plus sounds good if you fancy ripping off My Bloody Valentine with the pitchshifting.

They tend to 'rattle' a lot- the most common mod is to replace the stock bridge (on the reissues anyway) with a Fender Mustang bridge- they're much more stable- the notches on the default one are a bit shallow and prone to string slippage- unless you barely touch the strings when you're playing. Using heavier strings helps too.

The offset design I find really comfortable to play, and the Jazz/Jags are a nice weight.

Soundwise I think the Jags are very trebley- particularly with the 'strangle' switch engaged (changes circuits?) I prefer the sound of a Jazzmaster- the neck pickup playing something high on the neck is aceness. Depends what kind of sound you're after- personally I find Jags a bit too scratchy.. but I haven't played one through my usual setup to compare it to.

I would

Defo buy American Fenders! Sound advice.

i think, it seems, i ought to go for a jazzmaster

it appears that would be most beneficial for the type of sounds i wish to create - heavy, lush and thick. i was going to name this thread "fender jazzmasters?" too, but changed it at the last moment. oh well.

but keep the advice/suggestions coming, please...

jazzmasters

are definately the better guitars for range of sound, and they have slightly longer necks than jags. as long as you change the floating bridge for a mustang one you shouldnt have any problems. you would be best going for a japanese reissue, pickup-wise.

i'd imagine this has all been covered in the thread already, but i can't be arsed reading through it

nah, it's good

the more people who say it, then it kind of confirms it for me.

jazzmaster + mustang bridge + japanese reissue pickups = perfect

Get a Jag or jazzmaster

Sonic youth, Dinosaur, MBV can't all be wrong.

Anything other than using a tele, they maybe great guitars but their so ubiquitously indie.

I have a jazzmaster

i much prefer it to my old Jaguar mainly due to the neck.

The pups are fine in these guitars (mine a jap). A lot of people complain of low out put & run out & replace to pups which is fine, although a cheap option worth trying is to change the tone & volume pots.

Defo need to change the bridge for a Mustang one.

yeah the stock japanese pickups are unfairly maligned

i've recently changed mine for seymour duncan vintage style ones and can't say i've noticed a staggering difference, the neck one does sound richer and now it is like the tone doesnt go as high as before, I think the sound is as much to do with the string through bridge design and pickup spacing as the pickups themselves. Looking at the ones I took out they are thiner deeper coils than vintage ones but they arent as thin and deep as strat ones, they are somewhere inbetween, the ones i've put in did make it hum alot more in single pickup mode and I ended up having to copper shield the whole inside to make it tolerable. In conclusion the cij pups are fine, vintage correct ones are marginally better but a bit of a hassle.

not really

the tele is just the number one guitar for anything.

Jaguars?

Bollocks.

Strats all the fucking way.

Jimi Hendrix.

End of fucking story.

Bleh

High maintenance indie-kid fashion guitars.

i have one

and it's my pride and joy.

i have one too

i love my jag. sounds amazing, feels amazing, looks amazing. loads of character.
jimi hendrix did actually occasionally play a jag too.
not a guitar without 'issues' though. needs to be properly set up and played with heavy guage strings or you'll have massive problems with strings falling off the bridge and going out of tune, but this has all been said before.
i like the switching system, means i can flick a switch and use the neck pickup with the vol way down - perfect for my ebow.
and the 'strangle' switch makes some very interesting noises when i'm using my fuzz factory.

I have one

Is a 2004 re-issue. I remain a bit disapointed. Even changing the saddles on the bridge it is a pain. The sound is good but a little thin. If you are getting one, spend £1200 or whatever and get a proper daddy one as the re-issues are not worth £650.

In fact I want to sell mine, but after that sales pitch I'm going to struggle here!

Fuzz

factories rock. I want one.

this, to me, is like a barbie to a little girl

http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=74332

I want one. Buy yourself this and if you aren't entirely satisfied then give it to me!

That

Is extremely sexy. I've been thinking about getting one. Coolest thing Fender have done in eons.

you can get them for a couple of hundred less at thomann

I like the look of them but think the novelty of the purple sparkle finish would soon wear off, like the gold pickguard though. Im not sure where I stand on this, hideous or amazing http://a399.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/50/l_55ad4cd9daee59d1c5663e1a2a0d85de.jpg

i think that's hideous.

looks too much like those mirrored guitars the guy from muse plays. can't stand him.

i'm surprised this thread is still getting comments...it's cool.

yeah

I think I just want to like it because it is a jazzmaster made of metal, im glad this thread is still going I could talk about jazzmasters forever, there is a good forum for jag/Jm's called offsetguitars.com, here is a thread that almost upset me http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/index.php?topic=9809.0

.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=O6WLkyxySA0 - nice to see j actually uses (or rocks the fuck out) his jazzmaster. it seems that most guitarists who have guitars made for them never use them.

thanks for the heads up about that forum. i'll check it out :D

that thread is really depressing. i hate 'relicing' guitars. just let them age gracefully, i say. i prefer to let them get beat up after years of playing, then it looks like you're a bad ass rocker, instead of kicking the crap out of a gorgeous and brand new guitar to make you look cool.

the first picture looks exactly like my one so I was horrified

I obsess over every little mark on mine, I dont know how he could have done it

J recently had all his stolen

including the signature prototype and an old vintage one that survived his house burning down without even going out of tune, his message was really sad about saying how much he will miss them

buy it

but put a mustang bridge on it. I went through hell with a jaguar until I did that. Sounds great now.

y'know

everyone is saying "if you buy one, but a mustang bridge on it", and i keep wondering why the fuck fender haven't remodeled the jaguar to have the mustang bridge on it anyway?

No Way

they can have a bit of a tuning problem if you don't play it frequently but they hold up well to plenty of abuse in terms off string striking. Honestly buy one and you will love it.

Our Singer

Uses one in The Chiara L's i have used it a few times when my 335 conks out, i can honestly say they sound fantastic, but its gotta be tailored to your needs, if you wanna play thicker heavier sounding stuff avoid it but if you want some sparkle in your sound then you cant go wrong with a jag.

Jaguars

.... are great guitars. Anyone who says that they go out of tune, sound shit etc. has not played one that is set up properly. But it's very common, even most guitar shops and techs don't know how to set them up properly because they are unique and not too common.
Japanese and American Jags are both really nice, but most people agree the pickups are crap. Easy to change them for Seymour Duncans or Fender American Vintage Reissue, then you have a really nice sounding guitar. Jaguars are trebly because of 100k tone pots (Strats are 50k I think), just use your tone control!
Mustang bridge is pretty much essential IMHO, for modern playing styles, but no mod is neccessary, it takes 3 seconds to change.
My Jag (Japanese) is the most tuning stable guitar I have owned even with heavy trem abuse, you can leave it in it's case for days and not have to tune it when you get it out.
The Jag/Jazzmaster trem is a really great design, just need to set it up according to the instructions which takes 5 mins.
Do all setup yourself, it's easy and techs usually get it wrong. Folks at www.offsetguitars.com wil help!
The thing about .11 stings minimum is true. Anything less and it will sound crap. But don't get put off by that, .11s feel and bend like .10s or even .9s on a Jag because of the angle of strings off the bridge and scale length.
Trouble is, most Jags you try in a shop will have .10s and be set up crap, this is even true of a lot of people who own one but noone has told them how to make it play and sound great, and I think that's why a lot of people get put off.
But I think although they are great guitars, they should not be your only one, in most cases. You will enjoy it more if you have a contrast, another Fender or something different. But you will play it with a different personality from when you play your other guitar(s).
I'm sorry about the long post, I just love Jags and feel that they are misunderstood.

Correction

Sorry, I meant most people think the pickups are crap on Japanese ones, not the American ones.

Isn't a bit of a case of form

over function for these guitars? I'd rather buy something that sounds amazing from the get-go, without having to swap out pickups and hardware.

Fender Jaguar

when i first got my jag i loved it, but soon after i hated it.it hardly had any sustain ,the bridge pickup tone was too thin ,if it went through a fuzz box it fedback or should i say it squeeled like a pig,the bridge saddles would move on their own (spooky), the bridge would rock from left to right nacking up the intonation, and finally the two pickup switches and mid cut switch grouped together were a pain in the arse,REMEDY for me was,1,i had the bridge pickup recoiled (rewired)up to 8.5k by kent armswhen i first got my jag i loved it, but soon after i hated it.it hardly had any sustain ,the bridge pickup tone was too thin ,if it went through a fuzz box it fedback or should i say it squeeled like a pig,the bridge saddles would move on their own (spooky), the bridge would rock from left to right nacking up the intonation, and finally the two pickup switches and mid cut switch grouped together were a pain in the arse,REMEDY for me was,1,i had the bridge pickup recoiled (rewired)up to 8.5k by kent trong for 30 quid,2,i took off the metal pickup cases, this stopped the squeeling.3, i put lock tight glue on the grub screws on the saddles once they were set in position.4, i wrapped elecricians tape round the bridge legs to stop it rocking,5,i bought a BUZZ STOP for 25 quid they improve it greatly by stabelizing the saddles and bridge and increasing sustain, check em out on the net they`re well worth it.6,i took off the mid cut switch and bypassed the capacitor, then replaced the two pickup switches with a les paul style pick up selector mounted on a blank chrome metal switch holder, which i made by marking round the original one then filing it to the correct size.after all that it sounded the dogs bollocks brill, for the rock band i was in at the time, and was easy to opperate and behaved its self.
