YESAYER
YEASAYER
Yeasayer are an experimental band from Brooklyn who channel not only the ritualistic but also the futuristic into their distinctive music. Describing their sound as "Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel" the band have gathered ultra-props for their new debut album 'All Hour Cymbals' out now on the newly founded We Are Free imprint. 'All Hour Cymbals' is packed with moments of pan-ethnic spiritualism, filtered through walls of echo and layers of dreamlike synth. Tracks like debut single "Sunrise" throb with a gospel-tinged a cappella vocal amongst the handclaps and austere piano whilst the mix is gently, gradually taken over by a droning synthetic nature ambience. Yeasayer merge both a dystopian science-fiction sensibility and deep appreciation for the natural world, employing a wide, international range of sounds. The result is a unique form of indie rock world music that resists stepping into the essentialist, ethnocentric traps consistently tripped by high-minded hipsters. Ahead of two sold out nights at the ICA, this show looks set to be one of the last chances you'll get to see this group play in such intimate surroundings.

PSYCHEDELIC HORSESHIT
Considered by the Columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (Stooges-style) to Times New Viking (MC5-style), Psychedelic Horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. When asked for their name, singer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst replied, "Just call us Psychedelic Horseshit." The band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. Since then, they played with the Urinals, Country Teasers, Dan Melchior, Blues Control, toured with Pink Reason and Times New Viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 SXSW, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of their debut album Magic Flowers Droned on Siltbreeze. The sounds on Magic Flowers Droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of Step Forward-era Fall, the lo-fi fuzz of Swell Maps, and static noblesse of Slay Tracks-era Pavement. Is that classical enough for ya? For sure, this full-length debut is no Parsifal, but to these guys, sometimes a spear is just a spear and The Holy Grail is a movie made by Monty Python.

PINK REASON
Pink Reason is a band primarily consisting of Kevin Debroux who exited the womb and ended up in a small town in northern Wisconsin. He now lives (when he's not everywhere else) in Green Bay. Kevin has never really stayed in one location for long. Since early adolescence, he has not been the denizen of any particular spot much more than eight months or so. Pink Reason has been at it for roughly five years. They had a debut full-length album come out on the Slitbreeze label in early 2007 called 'Cleaning the Mirror'. A distortion-heavy party of psychedelic guitar jangles bleed into fire alarm howls, a plucked banjo shifts into a lonesome narrative, beautifully damaged melodies and slurred vocals creep along eerily with the rhythm. While he sings with a slacker yowl about praying for forgiveness, the tape crackles and the vocals decay. It¢s one of the few missteps, and it's a happy accident that inadvertently underscores the dark and personal sound of Pink Reason.
