I do hate all this "anti-folk" and "alt-country/americana" shite though. And I'm guilty myself, but it seems to just be used to cover up the fact you are listening to country or folk.
are hardly by any stretch of the imagination alt country though? Good band/album anyway. & I've even been loving his Electric President personna a lot more recently also.
Drive by truckers are ace though.
Grant Lee Phillips [nee Buffalo] is also doing good stuff still.
Crooked Fingers have also grown on me alot lately.
http://www.crookedfingers.com/flash/index.htm
Great Lake Swimmers and that Jay Bennett solo album should get a mention. I also recommend getting that Fargo Records comp that came out a few years ago. Clem Snide and Shearwater both feature on that. Also the Spanish label Housten Party should get a mention. And I'm about to order that Remate album!
are alt country, i reckon. i put on an alt country dj night a while back (it was strange, but drunk people love bluegrass it turns out...). acts we spinned included-
jim white (AMAZING)
tom waits
bruce springsteen
band of horses
dan sartain
16 horsepower
and...of course
johnny cash
basically, alt country really isnt a specific genre, but all those artists have a country/americana influence while doing something contemporary and interesting with it.
Oh yes.
Contains one of my favourite lyrics ever:
"In 27 years, I've drunk 50000 beers, and they just wash against me like the sea into a pier, mhmmm'"
have released some awesome records, and some total shite ones. Up On the Sun is genius I think - if I were in London I'd be going to that Scala show. Howlin' Rain are supporting, and their album is great, if a bit daft.
Magnolia Electric Company, but they were fucking dull live.
Silver Jews The Natural Bridge is clearly the BEST RECORD EVER MADE. Though I'm sure David Berman wouldn't consider himself "alt country" what a fucking annoying sub genre, critics' box ticking jobby that is. Loads of bands lumped together that actually aren't that similar.
Do Mountain Goats qualify? (I guess John Darnielle is the whiniest ever but in a good way)
For the suggestions everyone - I'll check out the ones I've not heard of.
I'm going to start a country mp3 blog - lagrangenz.blogspot.com, hopefully with recordings of a radio show I've just started on FleetFm. Mainly the older late 60/ early 70s hippiebilly / cosmic american stuff, but with some newer country tunes too.
...is an essential DVD. I won't try to describe it, so just trust me. Musically, Jim White's the lynchpin, but there are some great performances by David Eugene Edwards (15 Horsepower, Woven Hand) and the Handsome Family.
Also, anything Howe Gelb's ever been involved in is worth a listen. OP8, Giant Sand, Arizona Amp and Alternator, for example. If you ever see him live (and you've GOT to see him live...) then make sure it's somewhere without a curfew. I saw him at the Luminaire last year, and his set overran by an hour. Once you've got him on stage, you can't stop him. He's mesmerising.
Just heard that Howe Gelb's coming to the UK in May. UNfortunately (for me) the only date so far is in Edinburgh. He's supporting Willard Grant Conspiracy. Hope he ventures a little further South.
Oh, and I won't flinch from recommending the Appalachian Picking Society which is stretching the genre a little, perhaps, but then again it's easily the finest compilation album of all time, and a serious contender for the finest album of all time, full stop.
this qualifies strictly as Alt Country but 'Chester' by Josh Rouse and Kurt Wagner (from lambchop) is a great record. try out 'somehow you could always tell'.
most have been mentioned before, but to reiterate:
Magnolia Electric Co.
Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams/The Cardinals
Wilco
Josh Ritter
My Morning Jacket
newer artists I'm getting into are Doug Burr and Stephen Simmons - both american singer/songwriters with absolutely incredible voices. you can get some of their stuff for free on songsillinois.net i think (at least, that's where I found 'em).
the last thing i'd describe alt country as is "whiney indie schmindee"...there is some truly fabulous stuff out there :D
To be honest, actually, it might be that she's not really alt-country. At least, I wouldn't say so. But she gets called it more often than not, at least on these tags - http://www.last.fm/music/Neko+Case
So maybe you will like.
Or maybe you already do...

IT'S OK TO!
Very well said
It is infact, more than ok to.
I'll check out those bands, thanks.
The new Holton's Opulent Oog album is pretty special
RUN!
no no no
go for old crow medicine show! well, they're more like alt-bluegrass from memphis but i adore them. :)
i recommend wagon wheel & new virginia creeper.
Phosphorescent - Pride
Is great. The best Will Oldham record since I See A Darkness (yeah, I know it's not really him).
Also the Ola Podrida album which sounds like pre-world music Iron and Wine. Well worth a listen.
I just got the ola podrida a couple of days ago
it's great.
yes it is !
Now listen to Radical Face and Samamidon !
I'm guessing they are bands?
are they linked to ola podrida? Or just good music in a similar vein?
solo artists
similar spirit more than similar vein...
Thanks for that, had a listen and really liked them
Glad you enjoyed them !
Radical Face
are hardly by any stretch of the imagination alt country though? Good band/album anyway. & I've even been loving his Electric President personna a lot more recently also.
Are the Drive-By Truckers considered to be alt-country?
Or are they just rock? I'd recommend the Will Johnson solo albums and that boxset Magnolia Electric Co. released last year.
whatever the hell they are
they are one of the best bands on the planet
Southern Rock Opera is pretty fantastic.
Sure they are obsessed with Sweet Home Alabama but that isn't such a bad song to be obsessed with.
It's a very good thing
to be obsessed with. But I've never been a massive fan. I'll give them another go.
For full on country rock, I'm more partial to the Dexateens and the Quadrajets. Both awesome.
.
.
I can never judge when one genre ends and the next starts.
Drive by truckers are ace though.
Grant Lee Phillips [nee Buffalo] is also doing good stuff still.
Crooked Fingers have also grown on me alot lately.
http://www.crookedfingers.com/flash/index.htm
Grant Lee Buffalo were great. I've not listened to Fuzzy in a long time.
Great Lake Swimmers
are great, haven't listened to them in absolute yonks.
Favourite track's still Faithful Night, Listening.
Great Lake Swimmers
aren't really Alt Country, good though they are.
A much maligned genre
Willard Grant Conspiracy, Richmond Fontaine and Jim White always do great stuff
From a little further back Palace Brothers, Uncle Tupelo
And the real masters of the universe, Flying Burrito Brothers, Guy Clarke, Townes Van Zandt
Real masters of the universe
indeed. That's the real sweet stuff - and I'm finding that most new alt country (some brilliant exceptions of course) don't measure up to it...
Not quite sure where alt-country ends
and americana begins but would check out
'Bob Harris Presents... Americana' compilation or the Americana compilation on Spit and Polish (Teenage Fanclub's label). Many, many gems.
drive by truckers
are alt country, i reckon. i put on an alt country dj night a while back (it was strange, but drunk people love bluegrass it turns out...). acts we spinned included-

Marah
Wilco
The Cardinals
Okkervil River
Horse Feathers
Bright Eyes (quite whiney)
Indigo Moss
Iron & Wine
Josh Ritter
Marah
Went a bit shit though didn't they? They tried to go Oasis, it was horrible.
That first album is cool though.
funnily enough
they have turned it round again, the new album is really great
Ah
I didn't know that... I'll check it out, thanks.
yeah,
surely Wilco are 'alt country'?
Whatever they are, they're rather amazing.
canyon
my morning jacket
some of lift to experiences material
songs:ohio
some of halifax piers material
okkeril river
i always include post-rocky stuff in the genre. because i can.
Wilco Wilco Wilco
Wilco?
The american equivalent to Radiohead
Also
Midlake worth checking out
Indeed
Which is why I'm not that keen on them. Uncle Tupelo were ace though.
CANYON!
Agree with that. The album with "Ten Good Eyes" on it is great
its their only one
unfortunately :(
The Snake The Cross The Crown
Especially their new album 'Cotton Teeth', they're amazing.
Micah P Hinson
is great at this, check out and the gospel of progress. Ace, ace, ace.
Both been said
but worth repeating, Josh Ritter and Midlake.
SILVER JEWS
Seriously.
You must investigate, amazing.
David Berman being possibly my favourite lyricist/poet of all time too.
http://www.myspace.com/silverjews
Also
Uncle Tupelo
Flying Burrito Brothers
(though already mentioned.)
The Low Lows!
New album out 3rd of March and tour in April. They're brilliant! Even if I AM biased. :)
www.myspace.com/thelowlows
www.thelowlows.net
Silver Jews
or Silver Joos if you prefer. Starlite Walker is one of the best records ever made. Seriously.
Wilco - YHF, obv. Others also already listed above. Talk to fullerov, this is his area of expertise.
You know, it's the other way 'round, right?! Country music sucks. It does. "Alt-country" translates into, "It might be good."
Starlite Walker
Oh yes.
Contains one of my favourite lyrics ever:
"In 27 years, I've drunk 50000 beers, and they just wash against me like the sea into a pier, mhmmm'"
.
uncle tupelo
meat puppets
drive by truckers
wilco
flatlanders
Meat Puppets
have released some awesome records, and some total shite ones. Up On the Sun is genius I think - if I were in London I'd be going to that Scala show. Howlin' Rain are supporting, and their album is great, if a bit daft.
Songdog
anything david eugene edwards related
woven hand, 16 horsepower .... any will oldham incarnation obviously .... geraldine fibbers ....
the handsome family are good
does anyone agree??
bright eyes are shite
Wilco
Okkervil River
Iron & Wine
Magnolia Electric Company, but they were fucking dull live.
Silver Jews The Natural Bridge is clearly the BEST RECORD EVER MADE. Though I'm sure David Berman wouldn't consider himself "alt country" what a fucking annoying sub genre, critics' box ticking jobby that is. Loads of bands lumped together that actually aren't that similar.
Do Mountain Goats qualify? (I guess John Darnielle is the whiniest ever but in a good way)
listen to Blanche
they're good
Broken Family Band
more country in their earlier records, but good all the way through, like a stick of rock (with 'good' written on it).
Will Oldham
or Bonnie "Prince" Billy, etc etc - sure does have his alt-country moments
Thanks

Good call
Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus is superb. Obviously, the soundtrack is well worth getting too.
Gelb Comes to the UK
Just heard that Howe Gelb's coming to the UK in May. UNfortunately (for me) the only date so far is in Edinburgh. He's supporting Willard Grant Conspiracy. Hope he ventures a little further South.
Oh, and I won't flinch from recommending the Appalachian Picking Society which is stretching the genre a little, perhaps, but then again it's easily the finest compilation album of all time, and a serious contender for the finest album of all time, full stop.
Sounds brilliant.
I've only really heard the Byrds, Gram Parsons, Burritos stuff etc. from then, but I'd be interested in more.
Mojave 3
UNDERRATED.
So true
the handsome family
not sure if
this qualifies strictly as Alt Country but 'Chester' by Josh Rouse and Kurt Wagner (from lambchop) is a great record. try out 'somehow you could always tell'.
this is a genre i am addicted to.

Richmond Fontaine...
all the way! Brilliant band. Great live.
The singer Willy Vlautin's novels are worth a read too.
Richmond Fontaine
are one of the best bands on the planet.
^^
Willy's novels are being made into movies too.
No-one's said Neko Case!
So I will. Or is it just that she's not a band?
To be honest, actually, it might be that she's not really alt-country. At least, I wouldn't say so. But she gets called it more often than not, at least on these tags - http://www.last.fm/music/Neko+Case
So maybe you will like.
Or maybe you already do...
OH YOU ARE SO RIGHT
how could I forget? Absolutely killer voice.
She's also smokin' hot. At times.
"Star Witness" is one of my favourite songs ever.
I'm always disappointed
when an alt-country thread appears and nobody else mentions Papa M's Whatever Mortal album. It's ruddy marvellous.
Uncle Tupelo
Son Volt.
Bot Jay Farrar, both amazing.
Also try London based Treecreeper for a similar thing.
