Especially overlooked ones, obviously.

My list is pretty long but dEUS 'The Ideal Crash', The Longpigs 'The Sun is Often Out' and Jeniferever 'Choose a Bright Morning' are probably my main two.

I count your ability to count as a masterpiece

I think most of my answers to this would be pretty obvious.

But 'The Sun Is Often Out' a masterpiece? Really? Not just a fairly-good-for-the time middle-of-the-road Britpop album that will sound even more incredibly dated in ten years, only a 'masterpiece' in terms of sentimental value to certain people?

Stop stealing my thoughts!

The Delgados- Hate

whoops

i added longpigs after putting in the first two.

seriously, dig out that album, it's a lyrical, production and melodic joy and so much better than pablo honey (which i took back to the shop and got exchanged it for it). i stand by my opinion. history will tell...

true fact

it's better than the Bends too and they came out in the same year.

can I have

Soap - Younger Younger 28s?

I remember the NME review saying that it actually would be regarded as the Dare of the late 90s.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA

in all honesty

I do actually like this album, dispite my use of it as a 'comic' devise on occasions.

Mew: Frengers

Mars Volta: Frances The Mute
65daysofstatic: The Fall Of Math

Frengers

is a massive shout.

Have some kudos points on me.

and me

i rank it as the monst important record purchase of my life.

i keep

forgetting that.

fall of math definately

also maybe interpol-turn on the bright lights

well i will always think

that de-loused is a masterpiece. always. they will never write anything anywhere near as good as that - and certainly haven't so far. for me it's pretty near perfection.

De-loused, without a doubt.

'Seamonsters' ['the weddoes''], 'Lift to experience'[eponymous].

Horse of the Dog - 80s Matchbox B-line Disaster

Since the very first time I heard it i've proclaimed this album will become legendary.

I see it going the same as the Stooges albums. In 20 years, Q will run a 'lost classic' feature on it.

^I listened to this yesterday

It's a really good length, 10 tracks, 30 something minutes. Reminds me of being younger.
I'd like to think McLusky Do Dallas will definitely be a cult classic in 10 years.

^yes

^Yes, this.

Everyone is suggesting what I would of if I had thought about it a bit more.

You just prompted me to stick it on

Unfortunately Last.fm thinks similar artists include The Horrors and art brut and I now feel quite sick.

YES

Well, since I said it on the other thread

Jane Doe! Reasons? Well...it seems to be permantly on the boundary between sheer noise and heavy music, but it just obliterates pretty much every other similar heavy release with sheer emotion. Bannon's vocals are seriously affecting- even if you can't tell what he's saying half the time, he means it more than any other heavy music vocalist I've heard.

And the music itself is invigorating. It just so happens to sound fiercer than a million other albums because the heaviness has a purpose. The sense of chaos, of utter destruction and brilliant musicianship- which never goes up its arse- is the only way to channel Bannon's emotions. And the drumming is the best I've ever heard on a heavy release.
There you go.

it certainly is an amazing album

thats for sure.

go go

Jane Doe

and they're playing two dates at the Underworld soon, yipee!

sufjan stevens-chicago

my morning jacket-it still moves

my main two.

maybe Mew-Half The World Is Watching me too, if it gets released properly. its so so so much better than their two widely available albums.

wait

the album is called illinois. lolz

Half The World....

isn't as good. Its not as well produced by a mile, and the rerecorded Mica and King Christian on the b-side of Am I Wry? No are about the best two songs that I ever did hear.

Frengers is SO good that Mica wasn't on it.

that should've sounded

more like 'Frengers was SO good that they couldn't even find place for Mica on it' which makes no sense anyway, cause Mica is the bestest song ever, and it should've been on there.

I'm not sure of my point.

i think i understand your point

the reason i prefer it is because the production is worse. it sounds so...joyously infantile.
and the bridge of the old version of 'am i wry' is probably the happiest piece of music ive ever heard.
plus tsin-tsi
plus saliva
plus wheels on me
plus panda.

...i think i might be putting 'a triumph for man' and 'half the world' together as one item. hmm...

I love

Illinois, it's the most important album of my life and encouraged me to do what I am about to do.

Post that reply.

Obvz.

Trencher - Lips

i fucking hope so anyway

alt-death metal, casio-core masterpiece

reasons...

not like anything ive ever heard before and the casio keyboard is amazing

doesnt take itself too seriously

experimental in all the right places

coherent and a good length

seem to be overall nice blokes

Reasons please!

It makes it just a bit more interesting...

...

I'd quite happily bet a large sum of money that not a single one of the albums mentioned so far will ever come to be commonly regarded as a masterpiece. Sufjan Stevens? Mars Volta? 80's Matchbox 'going the same [way] as the stooges'?
What a fucking joke.

wrong about interpol, fun one

Some one mentioned "Turn On The Bright Lights", which I am quite certain will be regarded as a masterpiece in the years to come;, I regarded it a masterpiece on about the 10th listen. Reasons: great melodies, brilliant song structure, nothing dated, no pigeonholeable genre, deliciously enigmatic, words "Oh look, it.s stopped snowing!", sorry I digress, it always leaves me wanting more.

^

excruciatingly right

Sufjan

will. You are a dick.

Subtle- For Hero:For Fool

Life Without Buildings- Any Other City
The Unicorns- Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus
Pavement- Westing (once everyone else grows ears that work)
At The Drive-In- Relationship of Command (or is that already a classic?)

If we are talking cult classics..

..then Relationship Of Command must be.
I was a bit confused at what "classic" really meens.

this

^

Life Without Buildings!

I loved them. Lost their albums and can't find their stuff anywhere.

Am I allowed to post a mediafire link

to an mp3 of 'Love Trinity'?

If you can't post owt

then I'd appreciate someone (you, if you like) uploading this album that people keep wanking about to yousendit or whatever. I'm very, very interested by the prospect of hearing it, yes Sir.

Live at the Annandale Hotel

a live retrospective CD they released last year from a show in Sydney is probably the best place to start, cos it contains all (but one, I think) of their previous releases. And they sound great live. Like Clare Grogan fronting the Velvet Underground.

i had the same issue

there was a thread about them the other month and somebody posted a link to a place selling any other city (it was probably me)...i ordered the thing and i keep getting occasional messages saying it still on back order...fuckers

I’ve been trying to get it too.

I can’t find it anywhere. I bought that recent live album they put out, but it’s just not as good.

I cant imagine the abuse I may

receive for this but...'The Good Will out' by Embrace. Ballads, anthems and riff heavy rock numbers make for an absolute classic!!

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Efterklang - Parades
The Mars Volta - Deloused In The Comatorium
Bjork - Vespertine
NIN - The Downward Spiral

hmm

i don't really get the efterklang album that much. i've listened to it about ten times and it's just ok to me, nothing special...

I was the same

keep listening. The arrangements are just SO great. I think seeing it live did alot for my appreciation of it

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Good choice! One of my faves for some time.

.

i am convinced nobody will look upon any of charlottefield's output as masterpieces, though that's more a problem with them than the music

I love Efterklang

but I think I prefer tripper

I think i enjoy sitting down and listening to Tripper more

but musically i think Parades is far superior, hence my choice of it being a *boak - dare i say it?* masterpiece

None of the middle road, mid-90s indie at the start of this will be remembered

at all, let alone as classics...

Meles has some good shouts, as does Medulla, and Decline of BSP / Relationship of Command will probably be there.

I'm gonna plump for Battles - Mirrored of recent albums, I reckon a lot of kids will have been influenced by that and will be aping it in a few years. Why? - Elephant Eyelash will be a cult classic I reckon. Matmos' reputation in general can only rise in future I think, their music is clever, different and far catchier / poppier than people give credit for.

I dunno, Electelane - The Power Out?

hmm

Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone

Drum's Not Dead - Liars

The Glow Pt.2 - Microphones

and there are several more, probably.

Oooh, speaking of Liars

is the debut worth getting?

100000000%

yes.

Uhh yeah...

if you don't have We Were Wrong... get that first though. It owns.

If you love Liars

Don't overlook the singles- each a gem.

yes.

Differnt line up

If you like the way Liars sound now and cherish "Drums Not Dead", "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned", "Liars" and all the ensuing single mayhem; you may be dissapointed by the first one. Not to say it isn't a must though. It is very Gang Of Fourish and boldly goes where no band has gone before- of course!

^

Read this twice!

I agree with The Ideal Crash

cos it's incredible.

I would like to add:
Heartworm by Whipping Boy (although it does sound dated)
Meadowlands by The Wrens
Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins
Alligator by The National
Black Sheep Boy - Okkervil River

As they're all masterpieces in my eyes.
My eyes aren't usually a good judge of this kind of thing though, feel free to attack and ridicule me! :)

kinell

heartworm...you are damn right...need to dig this out tonight

Agree with Alligator

but after my initial luke warm reception, I think I prefer Boxer now.

I'd like to add

'Penance Soiree' by Icarus Line to my list. It's really rather good.

Yes!

Heaven or Las Vegas for sure...It took me a while to really appreciate it, but I would say its probably my favourite Cocteau Twins album and opened me up to the "Dream" side of things in general..

add

bright eyes - im wide awake (its morning)

perfect album

hmm

I prefer lifted. Though it's a bit long.

Elbow

Cast Of Thousands

^this

easily the best thing theyve done and grace under pressure is fucking glorious.what a way to end an album "WE STILL BELIEVE IN LOVE SO FUCK YOU"

Deerhunter

'Cryptograms'. I keep making this exact point to anyone who cares to listen. In 10 years time this will be far more appreciated than it is now....and it's already justifiably lauded with praise.

It's great - worth your patience

i'm going to get Atlas Sounds too.

try getting it somewhere else

or be patient, but do get it

I'm with you

Deerhunter - Cryptograms has been in my CD player pretty much non stop since it came out.

Flourescent Grey EP

is stunning too. A very exciting band.

Brad Cox hasn't quit his day job

I couldn't believe my ears on this one. Ambient proto-punk, or what I don't know. Deerhunter knows some cool places. Love "Fluorescent Grey" too, title track is a definite "Masterpiece" for it's structure and climax.
