Listing things is oh-so-fun and work is oh-so-dull, so here goes.

Albums you believe to GENUINELY be worth 10/10. Not like an amazon review of "5 tracks are rubbish but it's still 10/10", but albums you think are (near)perfectly written.

My choices are:

* The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
* The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
* Mono - You Are There
* Battles - Mirrored
* Moloko - Statues
* Massive Attack - Mezzanine
* Xiu Xiu - Knife Play
* GY!BE - Lift Your Skinny Fists...
* Bjork - Vespertine

Knock yourselves out...

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
My Blood Valentine - Isn't Anything

Angel Dust

Faith No More

Achtung Baby!

The Joshua Tree
War
Boy
Seven And The Ragged Tiger

George Best - Wedding Present

His 'n' Hers - Pulp
And No More Shall We Part - Nick Cave & co
Funeral - Arcade Fire

But I'm not sure you can have 10/10 (yawn, old debate etc) because it implies a perfect level of consistency, and I can't think of any album where there isn't a song that could have been dropped.

That's the intention of my thread

...albums where you think every track is stunning

But I don't think they exist

That's why I mentioned George Best, because it's probably the most consistent album I know, and when I'm in the mood for it, it's great. ALL albums (off the top of my head) have one or more *slow* tracks, by virtue of the fact that they usually have a standout *great* track. It's all relative. Or something.

PULP??! So wrong....

no no no no... I give that -10/10

Very few

Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate
Alligator by The National
Searching For The Young Soul Rebels by Dexy's Midnight Runners

^ is it fact or myth that DMR

Not quite

They're named after Dexedrine, an amphetamine.

:D

Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity

Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Mono - One More Step And You Die
Million Dead - A Song To Ruin
Joanna Newsom - Ys

'The Wolf' is better

but is knocked down to a 9/10 because of the redundant 'Make Sex'. Everything else is pure disco-metal motivational GOLD.

there ain't many..

Comon Kids - Boo Radleys
Holy Bible - MSP
I See a Darkness - Bonnie Prine Billy
Water and Solutions - Far

Only two:

Andrew WK - I Get Wet
80s Matchbox B-line Disaster - Horse of the Dog.

ALMOST is this it, remain in light, qotsa s/t

American version

originally didn't have NYC Cops - Think Soma replaced it off the top of my head. I've got the import for some reason, so guess that makes my copy a 10/10. Allegedly.

If soma replaced it...

Doesn't that mean it's on the album twice?! I quite like New York City Cops anyway, it's not the worst track on the album.

Appetite for Destruction deserves 10/10!

no it was replaced with

the reggae-ish not very good song that they used over here as a bside.

NYCC isnt the worst song tho - alone, together is

when it started

was the song that replaced NYCC.

LISTING THINGS IS F U N fun

GS!YBE-new slow riot for zero canada
Holy Fuck- LP
The Locust- new erections

the list could go on

^ i also vote Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada

but it's an EP, not an album.

So if we include EPs, then that

It's long enough

to count as an album so I think it should be allowed. it's also the best thing GS!YBE have ever done so...

ahem.

That may have been the joke.

some decent laughs in your list as well

as if Bjork ever had a 10/10, Sugarcubes is her best and she wasn't even "Bjork" yet.

I reckon

Medulla (the album, not the DISer) is pretty close to a 10. Can't comment on Medulla the DISer

damn

you beat me to it!

In all seriousness though.

I hate to sound like a boring cliche but ITAOTS is my 10, if I have any at all.

Today I am going to say the singular works of musical genius are:

Pavement- Slanted & Enchanted
Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
Public Image Ltd- Metal Box
The Unicorns- Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
Subtle- For Hero: For Fool
Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Talk Talk- Laughing Stock
The Avalanches- Since I Left You
Captain Beefheart- Trout Mask Replica
Company Flow- Funcrusher Plus

Plus:
- my version of 'Inches' where it ends at 'Reprobates Resume' and misses out the inconsistent-sounding earlier bits which end the actual record (because this is actually a much more complete album that way)
- my version of 'Westing' which misses out all the tracks between 'Krell Vid User' and 'My Radio' which re-occur in the Slanted & Enchanted bonus box set

I really need to get The Unicorns' album

but i can only find it for mega-bucks which my budget doesn't allow

have a look here

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0000DJEMK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203677401&sr=8-1

you have to order it from america but it should only be about $10 incl P&P which is only around £5 which is a bargain in anyones book. what a fantastic album.

conversley are you going to watch Islands on Tuesday, can't wait.

Oh no I didn't realize it was out of print

that and the Life Without Buildings album too. Its tragic, they're both such seminal classics... if the first cLOUDDEAD album goes out of print too then the future has no chance.

Elliott Smith

'Either/Or' is a work of utter genius that is 10/10 easily.

Also see 'Vauxhall & I' by Morrissey

elliott smith's

either/or is a definite.
it's perfect.

Hmm

The National - Alligator
REM - Automatic For The People

Probably the two I'd consider to be perfectly flawless albums.

There is so much love for Alligator.

I've got hold of it recently and it is very very good. Secret Meeting has the potential to be one of my favourite songs, but is it really a 10? I may be missing something. Why do you think it's a 10/10?

:

From the first moment, there’s no messing. One drum-beat and you’re into ‘Secret Meeting’, burrowing it’s way into your brain subtly. And it just doesn’t stop. Relentlessly melancholic, impossible to ignore and undeniably brilliant. Just when you’ve got over how good one song is, along comes another to blow it out of the water. This is an album of highlights, repeatedly and relentlessly making you feel privileged to be listening to it. It’s an album of quiet reflection, for those moments when you need to be alone with your thoughts. This album is a quiet night in your flat, the rain pouring outside, a bottle of red wine in front of you. This album is the drive into the hometown you’ve been away from for far too long – it’s the moment the city lights come into view in the distance and you know you’re there.

It is a rare beast of an album that feels both uplifting yet reflective, a truly unparalleled masterpiece in controlled and dramatic emotions. Hear the strings on ‘Daughter of the Soho Riots’ and melt. Hear the way he sings ‘I’m so sorry for everything…’ at the end of ‘Baby, We’ll Be Fine’ and means it.

So what does it sound like? The Tindersticks with a little more red wine? Interpol with better songs and more sunshine? Who cares. You need to hear this album, your life is bordering on incomplete without it. The REAL album of the year.

That puts it in perspective.

"This album is a quiet night in your flat, the rain pouring outside, a bottle of red wine in front of you." - I have to say I have done this while listening to Alligator. Well brooding.

I've only given it a few listens, I'll listen to it exclusively on my way back home today. When I get back I'll probably agree.
