I've never had the chance to see any of his plays performed, its something that I'm determined to rectify as soon as possible. I think reading about Harold Pinter and then reading some of his plays prepared me quite well for him. I've never had the opportunity to see The Homecoming either. Normally I find reading plays quite a frustrating experience, but I still find reading Beckett's compelling even after multiple read throughs.
I always preferred Endgame to Waiting For Godot, but maybe thats because I read it first and it made more of an immediate impression on me.
Anyone else interested in either of these people?
I love Beckett
In my mind he is one of the last modernists. I love Waiting for Godot, that the boredom of waiting forces the two characters to think seriously about their identity.Beckett conveys a universal message that pondering the impossible questions, that arise from waiting, cause pain, anxiety, inactivity and destroy people from within.I love Beckett's pessimism.
Crushing futility
is what I like the most about his plays. And the portayal of marriage.
i like
his haircut and glasses.
There was always a large poster of Beckett
in the waiting room at my old orthodontist's. Strange thing was the orthodontist looked exactly like him.
That strikes me
as a very initimidating poster to have up at an orthodontists! Mine just had dull watercolours to distract you from the person wrenching my mouth around.
Mine
had a television in the ceiling.
i love reading plays
but i hate going to the theatre.. i just find it really hard to get into it and just feel really embarased for the actors
I really like Beckett
but I'm in no condition to talk coherently about literature this morning.
I'm not really familiar with Pinter's plays, although I'm sure I'd find plenty to like and admire. Unlike his godawful "poetry".
The Homecoming
is the first one I read, I still think its incredible. So that'd be a good place to start. I've never read any of his poetry, and I'm really not into his overtly political more recent work.
Am I the only one who was hoping this would be
about Quantum Leap?
no i did too
i thought it would be about that show
I remember preferring Endnote too
but Waiting for Godot stayed with me much more. I haven't read anything else or seen any performed. I have seen Waiting for God though.
I haven't read anything else
of his either.
Diana and Tom really stuck it to that nursing homes management though.
I've seen Endgame performed
and really enjoyed it, I hadn't read any of his stuff before then. Haven't really read much of his stuff now even though that was a couple of years ago, but it's on my list of stuff to read ok?
Speaking of weird plays, anyone like Sarah Kane?
Novels
I do my pHd on Beckett and I gotta say what I keep coming back to is how funny he is. Once you start getting the farce in everything he writes the works become this strange running joke. Although, I like the novels better than the plays. If you like Godot and Endgame read the Trilogy!
Krapp's Last Tape
Whats it like? I'm intrigued, I've wanted to read it for quite a while.
Krapp's Last Tape
The conceit of the tapes is pretty great, but its best to see this one I think. You can get 'Beckett on Film' from most libraries or even dl it. It has every one of Beckett's plays each by a different director. Damien Hurst and Anthony Minghella are involved, pretty cool.
During the Beckett centenary in Dublin
I got to see loads of Beckett plays for cheap. It was fantastic. And yeah, I really, really, really like him.
AND I saw The Homecoming on Tuesday. It woz gr8. But not as good as Beckett.
I absolutely love reading Beckett too, but there's something so special about seeing his stuff being staged. In January, Barry McGovern and the Gate Theatre brought their production of a few Beckett extracts to Brussels, which was brilliant.
Barry McGovern is just fantastic.
I still can't believe they've scrapped the Samuel Beckett Theatre Centre at Trinity College Dublin.
