My problem is I keep encountering musical debate and discussion on DiS (some people even post opposing views!) I can't even look at the threads on the left hand side without seeing people discussing the merits of one record vs an other (without even the bus stop girl stalkers for a bit of variety these days).

So who are these bastards who want to get into a new band and look for a bit of advice and discussion? Shouldn't they just man up and buy every single Fall album ever? Damn them. How can they be stopped?

First: Light meditation, I find, gets me warmed up and limber. A good short sharp shock to the temples, such as that produced by by an ECT machine, also does wonders for liberating one from the acrid tang of 'chart music' (music - ha!).

Thereafter, I generally warm up to the main event by looking at pictures of Gareth's significant artefacts: an asthma inhaler, a set of contact lenses, a Talulah Gosh t-shirt. I try to picture Gareth in relation to each of these, imagining how he relates to it as he goes about his daily business as an average man.

Then and only then am I read to move onto the entree - an interview with them in an underground fanzine. I note the deep humility underlain by sharp critical intelligence he and his cohorts possess.

Then, I put on their debut album, and am disgusted at what a shrill, anaemic blaspheming of yer whole C86 scene it is.

I then chuck it in the bin, and stick on DIOYY? while jumping violently from bed-to-chair and back. Which rocks.

they're such sell outs anyways man I liked them when they were like more underground than they are now, they were like upper mantle level back then!!!
