Can anyone name any? It might seem like a bit of a daft question, but i'm not sure i've ever heard a band and thought they sounded similar, although you can often hear an influence?

nope
i cant think of anyone who sound "like" the smiths.like you said you can hear influences in other peoples songs but not a band you can say "ohh they sound just like the smiths"
The Sundays and The Boyfriends
Of course not exactly the same, but they do sound more than a little similar

Smoke Threw A Wond
The Smoking Popes sound like Morrissey fronting
a mid-90s pop punk band.
Then again, they were a mid-90s pop punk band fronted by a guy who sounded like Morrissey, so it's to be expected.

.............
"Did you ever hear 'Born To Quit'? It's by the Smoking Popes. I thought that album was extraordinary, the most loveable thing I'd heard in years." --Morrissey
The Smyths
The Social
(if Morrissey sang basso profundo)
the social
are great, still waiting for their album!
Gene,
surely?
The Housemartins
Good point
I liked Gene a lot.
The Smiths comparison was a double-edged sword for them though.
Gene
for sure. It's funny because I remember the NME calling every band "the next Smiths" at one point or another..... I remember Marion getting called it, and Suede too.
oh and
The Ordinary Boys ;)
The Organ
they used to remind me of The Smiths
^ true.
me.

At least I think the guitar on Renew is quite Marr-esque. Not that any of those songs will ever get played ever again ever.
Mighty Mighty
their singer totally ripped Morrissey off.
The Sundays
Reading, Writing & Aritmetic is a good place to start
The Housemartins sound like a clone
Go Go Charlton

listen to the wise's daughter
i can't think of any beyond the organ
i think there are more bands who sound like morrissey's solo stuff. probably because it's a lot less complex
Occasionally
an individual song crops up that sounds very Smithsonian - the first time I ever heard Belle & Sebastian's "Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying" I thought it wouldnt sound out of place to hear Mozzer crooning it.
^
good call
always hear people ripping of mozmoz...
...and doing pretty good job of it.
but dont cant really think of band who musically sound like the smiths. possibly cause if any band tried to, or nearly did, they would fail pretty badly at it.
I think the fact no one really sounds like the smiths is one reason theyre one of my favourite bands. as wierd as that sounds.
The Wedding Present
= smiths fans second favourite band.
the dears
get it all the time
Gene
Everytime. The classic band with one influence.
special needs
used to
The Dears
Some Brand New. Srsly.
I'm sick of your tattoos
The Isles...
sound a bit like them
