Is Progressive Rock dead?

I know alot of people sneer at this particular genre I sort of do a bit myself. However, I saw a band in Brighton last month called Diagonal and they were bloody amazing. Their music could really only be described as prog with maybe a hint of death jazz. Also a little bit Mars Volta-esque but more human if you know what I mean.

Has anyone heard the Chrome Hoof album? Bloody cool. Again prog but weirdly fused with disco.

Is Prog coming back?

Find a new word. If it sounds like a band that has already been around for years then it's not prog, is it?

...

Yes a very good point. But I can't think of a new word!!

death jazz?

...

Look up Ephel Duath.

okay, i will!

...

hmm.

...

Now I must provide information.

They have two proper records that I know of. The first one (The Painter's Palette) is fairly straightforward metal, but with unusually clean, noodly guitar parts and ridiculous time-changes out the arse. It's also significant to mention that both the drummer and bassist were originally jazz musicians.

The second record makes the first sound like Nickleback. Basically I think the concept was "never play the same riff twice", so they don't. It's sparser sounding, with the music alternating between quick blasts of highly aggressive math metal and long languid passages of delicate, yet sinisterly dissonant jazz guitar and spooky fairground keyboards.

Easily one of the most random records I own - you have to work hard with it.

So... that's Ephel Duath.

...

Also: The drumming is FUCKING disgusting throughout. Always worth mentioning.

Ephel Duath!

I had forgotten they existed! I came across them supporting Dillinger and Poison The Well a few years ago. I had no idea what to make of it. I seem to remember a saxophonist who appeared to just be improvising very poorly, it was all quite charmingly absurd.

q: if its never repeated

is it a riff?

...

Yeah.

This sounds mental.

I have to check them out just out of curiosity, also I love crazy ass drumming.

sounds ace...

wish i had headphones at the office - my coworkers are not going to go for this.

Prog Rock

is the only thing that's alive.

i've always reckoned

that prog is comparable to post-rock. comparable is probably the wrong word to use, so maybe post-rock is actually a better, less wank version of progressive? i dunno, really...

Post-rock

fucking blows.

no it's just sleeping.

Those sounds are its snores.

Although... do Porcupine Tree count? I remember them being pretty darn good.

yes, Porcupine Tree do count

and they are fucking incredible. Gavin Harrison must be in the top 3 drummers alive today. http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/gavinharrison1.html

no!

skatar, a wonderful 6 piece icelandic rock outfit that play their hearts out whilst wearing gold jump suits/threatening to stab the sound techs girlfriend in the liver.

AMAZING.

Battles

answer your question

Agreed.

And the Receiving End of Sirens. Prog metal is also very much alive :)

There Be Squabbles Ahead

Prog is alive and well, especially in Metal circles. The Scandinavian scene has given rise to some really great bands of late such as, Arcturus, Vintersorg, Age of Silence, Enslaved, Ulver, Frantic Bleep etc. Then there's all that uber-jazzy stuff coming out of America - Behold... the Arctopus, Blotted Science, Dysrythmia, Kayo Dot, and Scale the Summit spring to mind.

You should check out The End Record's current roster, they pretty much specialise in Prog/Avant Garde.

Kayo Dot

Do many of you guys know them? Some of the most forward thinking music I've heard in a long time.

The slew of nu-prog Metal bands is kind of shitty.

Also, I do rather like the Mars Volta, but to mention it here would be silly, no?

Kayo Dot...

One of my favourite bands. It never ceases to amaze me how brilliant they are. Cannot wait for the new album next month.

They are astounding.

but unfortunately the album has been put back until May, roughly.

*sob

May??

Shit. Any idea why? I am intrigued by the suggestion from Toby Driver that there is no "metal" on it and there's a greater jazz feel to it. Make that very intrigued.

Someone I know online

asked him if it was gonna be available at the upcoming US shows, and he said no, it wasn't ready yet and would probably come out in May.

I think the -metal/+jazz comment was mostly in reference to the drumming. I would be very surprised if it had no rah-rah heavy bits on it!

Naah

SO not dead.. Hella, Battles, etc. YOUTHMOVIES for fuck's sake! A lot of what we call 'math rock' would have been identified as prog twenty years ago. I'd say 'shoegaze' and 'post rock' also have strong prog elements- see something like Yume Bitsu's Golden Vessyl of Sound - Sure theres quiet/loud bits and effects pedals but theres also synth noises and it's that most 'prog' of all things- the concept album.

Also- Flaming Lips?

Scares me,

but you're right. Hell. I've suddenly realised that Battles sounds not 100% different from Discipline-era King Crimson. OMG.

I reckon

Prog is getting more fashionable.
The Mars Volta
Tool
Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater
Queensryche
Isis
even Muse are categorised as nu-prog by some.

Secret Machines!

Now Here Is Nowhere was a modern classic...

also, Mew.

Porcupine Tree is

the diet coke of Prog rock.

I dunno WHAT that makes Muse, but it aint good.

...

Jordan will be elected prime minister before the likes of Dream Theater and Queensrhyche are considered fashionable.

Progressive Rock

Is the most inventive genre in existence and will never die.

^this

go listen to oceansize

Oceansize has prog bits

but it's still very indie. New album was pretty yawnworthy.

^

get bent.its magical

I am bent

and it still sucks.

touche

why dont you like it though?

I thought it was just more of the same.

They use the same ideas all the time, most of which were nicked the first time round. I don't like the snoozy post-rock-esque bits. And I really dont like that part where he sings what sounds like 'im only 'avin a laaaafffffff' on the first track. What's that about?!

.

it is more of the same but i liked the first 2 so im going to like this one.there is another funny lyric.in other twin is it?track 5 anyway.he sings "run tommy run" in one of the funniest accents ever committed to record.but i love it all

i forgot to put

and you say you dont like the post rock bits but for me oceansize are like a less lazy and more inventive post rock band :)

I just wish they'd

lay off the weed and make something more interesting than it is 'nice'.

........

its obvious we are never going to see eye to eye on oceansize so lets agree to disagree.sooooooo eduardo

it's called

singing in your own accent, which in this case, is broad west yorkshire.

you schmuck.

...

It's still shit though. And that weird bit in Dead Lions or whatever is called should have been edited out.

That said, when he's not being northern, the singer has a great voice. Especially when it's not being drenched in effects.

Yeah

It's a terrible lyric, as are most of his.

Birmingham

oh GREAT

I was thinking to myself today:
"I want to make a prog rock album"
and it's declared dead!

I'll make sure it still reigns true.

It's not dead, it's just changing.

Which is obviously good as we don't want the same old stuff ripped off again and again.

Anyone seen the new TMV video

With Cedric dressed as the Elephant Man, fucking great, great song too.

StealthJAG

:)

i know this probably sounds daft to all you

but what does JAG mean?im fairly new to these boards and i see it mentioned a lot

JAGger

JAG - A popular term given to attempts to gain publicity for a musical performance via the internet

probably

yes it probably kind of was
at least we get to talk about prog

i think there's a distinction between 'prog' and 'progressive'

progressive music can be of any genre...it takes an existing sound and develops it, like progressive death metal, progressive house etc. Prog refers to a style of music that developed towards the end of the 60's characterised by the use of synths, extreme time signature and key changes etc. Bands like diagonal are prog bands but they're not progressive because they are simply rehashing a style created years ago...i personally would rather listen to that the most of the indie shit i normally hear at gigs!

aye

its true in a way, that there can be very little truly original music nowadays (unless all NEW music can really be is weird machine like bleeps, in terms of sound - it will have already been done - if you're willing to search)
It all becomes irrelevant when faced with the question of, do you like what sound is coming out of your speakers or not. I think perhaps calling something prog, deems it something that is not simply 'standard' (indie). If something is genuine, its good.

nah

youthmovies is prog innit!

Dungen

are ensuring that psych prog is alive and kicking. Panda remains one of the most joyous and uplifting freakouts I have ever heard.

Favourite prog album ever? That would have to be "Quiet Sun" by Mainstream.

swipe

i hope it is coming back, but the mars volta are kind of shit

People on here

don't get oceansize, why is that?

tis "progressive death indie"

dream theater

are the best prog band alive at this moment in time

...

That conflicts heavily with their status as 'Worst Band Of All Time'.

They also hold the title for 'Singer With Most Appropriate Name'.

New prog revivals

are heralded at least twice a year. In the aftermath of a nuclear war all that will be left are cockroaches and swirly, noodly epics in changing time sigs. And the radioactivity will have caused cockroaches to start speaking, so there'll always be a monthly music magazine journalist type to accordingly go "ooh, capes! Rick Wakeman!" as well.

I would call stuff like Battles prog

because they are pushing music forward in that kind of sense, and all that malarkey.

...but people have already said this

so i will shut up.
