the production is certainly interesting. I can't think of many other albums with such prominent drums. Works especially well on songs like Mistaken For Strangers and Brainy, yeah.

But not as good as some people make out! Kind of slow burning anthemic indie rock. The kind of thing you could play your mum and she'd probably like it but at the same time a bit more interesting than your average slow burning indie rock band.
i was convinced the national would be one of those bands 'acceptable' to play at my parents', my mother deemed it 'miserable'. what does she know, she bought the plain white ts album...
Production wise you can tell they have stepped up a mark with Boxer, but I also prefer alligator, it has a more raw sound and I seem to listen to it more than Boxer.
But both are quality albums, and their previous work to that. Roll on the next lot.
it's my favouritre album
for a long time full stop.
^ this
well, one of them anyway. from the moment i heard listened to it, i knew it was burying itself deep into my "favourite albums of all time" list.
the production is fantastic. so many layers of intricate details. it's just an overall amazing album.
It is amazing
One of my all time favourites.
Bye the way, has anybody ever seen the national and the csat of Who's line is it anyway? in the same room?

its production reflects it's atmosphere perfectly.
been listening to it repeatedly since it leaked and its still on a couple of times every week.
it's a really good album
the production is certainly interesting. I can't think of many other albums with such prominent drums. Works especially well on songs like Mistaken For Strangers and Brainy, yeah.
totally agree
True
but it has to be said they could have recorded it in the men's room at Grand Central Station and it'd probably have been pretty great.
Listening to The National for the first time ever right now.
Boxer, in fact. This feels almost like a spiritual moment.
Fuck that I'm knackered.
Na night.
This album,
extremely loud on headphones = AMAZING
Can someone explain what it sound like please?
I'm slowly inching towards wanting to purchase this album.
it sounds*

You make a persuasive argument.
*starts to read reviews*
It's very good...
But not as good as some people make out! Kind of slow burning anthemic indie rock. The kind of thing you could play your mum and she'd probably like it but at the same time a bit more interesting than your average slow burning indie rock band.
i don't know about that...
i was convinced the national would be one of those bands 'acceptable' to play at my parents', my mother deemed it 'miserable'. what does she know, she bought the plain white ts album...
since someone on here
said the bloke out of the National's voice 'sounds like he's calling in sick', i've had trouble taking them seriously.
When I made my friend listen to it...
he described it as "sounds like Johnny Cash started an indie band". Not sure how accurate this is, but it sure as hell made me laugh!
No self respecting parents would like it
I think people that don't like the national are just plain wrong.
ha ha ha ^^^ yup...
Boxer is the poor man's Alligator.
Poor you
Wrong about absolutely everything.
On the grape vine
Production wise you can tell they have stepped up a mark with Boxer, but I also prefer alligator, it has a more raw sound and I seem to listen to it more than Boxer.

not necessarily
'poor man's', but definitely more of an alligator fan
Have to say
I prefer Alligator. But part of that is my expectation levels were so high Boxer could never compete.
Agree about the production though, Boxer has a perfect atmosphere.
^^
what he said.
