And to think, they used to be such nice boys - Young Knives have been taking pot shots again, and this time the smoking barrels are pointed in the direction of the NME and the readers of some website called ‘DrownedinSound’.
Talking ahead of their NME Awards show performance at the London Astoria on Tuesday night (26 Feb) the band and DiS were objectively weighing up the merits and motives of a Gossip live album when out of nowhere frontman Henry Dartnall was drawn to speak on the topic of ‘cynicism’.
“Anyway, DrownedinSound is the most cynical website I’ve ever been on,” began Dartnall, presumably referring to the article that saw Phil Collins score an unanticipated rep win over his band.
“They hate us, they hate everything… all the punters hate everything.
“If you look at our reviews they’re not bad, but some of the things the readers say… I take things quite personally sometimes and I go on there it just goes 'mediocre, mediocre, fucking shittest band I’ve ever seen', you just go ‘fuck it, I’m not gonna go on here again’, but I keep going back to it.”
When asked if he had a message for the site’s readers, Dartnall replied: “At least they hate us, I just don’t like the idea that we’re mediocre, that’d be awful.
“I’ll take ‘I hate this, this is the worst thing I’ve ever heard’ or ‘I love this’, but to get six out of ten, that kind of reaction… probably what that shit pop music paper will give us for our album.”
When asked if he meant the NME, Dartnall replied in the affirmative.But isn’t this an NME show?
“Yeah! And they’ll be making money off us… Oh god, it makes me sick the music business. You use them and let them refuse you… (under his breath) gaylords.”
Superabundance, the band's new album, will arrive on the 10th of March, while the full interview with Young Knives will run on DiS over the coming weeks.

heard their single on the radio the other day and it was extremely mediocre. i quite liked some of their earlier stuff but the newer things have been bland bland bland. why must bands go in this direction? - why can't they go wierder???......so therefore unless its an album full of stonking tunes its always going to be a 6 out of 10. one simple thing they need to do if they don't like it. work outside the music industry machine - do the music you want to hear rather than what you think the music press is going to like. don't play nme shows. thats where all these bands fall down time after time.
Here's the thing, right.
If you look hard enough on this site, you can find that no band is immune from some hatred. Radiohead, Battles, Sonic Youth, Oceansize, to give some examples- there are people on here who hate them, but plenty more who love them. Every band that I love has been the subject of a vitriolic rant on the behalf of someone who hates them, thought they sold out, etc.
DiS has a pretty vast readership. I'm sure there are many people that like The Young Knives on here. In fact, in that thread, plenty of people seem to like them. So it's hardly as though everyone on here hates them. It's just I'd take more notice of the haters too.
That was sort of a rant, wasn't it? Anyway, just trying to defend my sad, niche passtime.

The reason they notice DiS and the cynicism that comes with is because people are free to make their views heard on here! Maybe if that happened more often they'd realise people on most sites think they are boring. What is the point of The Young Knives? because that's what it will deserve.
That's not to say that The Young Knives aren't one of the best British bands getting mainstream attention right now, because they are. But they aren't THAT good.
Music, in general, really should be better I think, and it's a bit depressing that bands like The Young Knives, The Cribs, and maybe a couple of others I can't think of right now, are the cream of the crop of bands getting mainstream exposure. Both decent bands for sure, and both bands I like and go and see live every now and then, but to say their stuff is worth more than 6/10 or 7/10 would be ridiculous if you are rating against classic albums.
I don't want to tail off into a rant but everything is so wrong about British music, mainly due to the way the industry (the press, radio, tv and everything) is set up, and has been for as long as I can remember.
It's time there was a bit of a change I think.

the Young Knives are Amazing..

When they try to write a hit, they just repeat the chorus too often and end up soundling like Maximo Park B sides. Maximo Park being the absolute ACME of mediocre indie CRAP by the way. Being, or appearing to be, clever is not a ticket to the big table.

Quantify your Statements
I think what Henry was getting at was the 'one sentence' (or barely one word sometimes) reviews and comments on his band (and numerous others).
If someone truly thinks a band are 'shit' or 'rubbish' I guess it is at least polite to give examples and quantify the reasons. "Ugly", "weird" or "boring" are not reasons, in fact if you want "beautiful" "normal" get your sad arse to a Pussy Cat Dolls or Girls Aloud gig! I like my guitar pop angular, spikey, witty and inventive and with some charm. TYK have this in spades and I guess they are just fed up with personal vitriolic assaults rather than informed fact based statements from people who actually 1) listen to their music fully and 2) know anything about music!

It's quite astonishing, isn't it, that most of the people here that give them hate seemingly mostly refer to their looks, that they are boring or ugly. This is something so typically English: superficial to the max and more caring about appearance and image than actual content and the music itself. Because their music isn't boring at all, that is, not more boring than most of the other shit and god awful indie bands that emerge from this country and get hyped to death for no reason other than their fringes, skinny jeans or purulent deflexion on their arses.
