let's dredge up the 'our love to admire' topic.
i think it's still awful; hasn't grown, & has very rapidly decayed (except pioneers of course).

anyone's else's mind change on this album? mine didn't, as i said it still sucks (& i looooove interpol). but i was surprised at how well it was received here.

i agree with you

in fact, i never really liked 'antics' all that much. then i listened to 'our love to admire' and thought "i'm sure 'antics' had better songs on it than this". so i listened to it again and now i completely love it. though, maybe not with the same intensity of 'turn on the bright lights', but it would be hard for any album to come close to that.

does anyone wonder whether interpol will make a record on the same level as 'turn on the bright lights'?

A very underwritten album

I love 'em too, and read somewhere they've been writing on the road for the first time in their career. I think them making a point of noting that is an admission that OLTA was a mis-fire.

I don't know

if I accidentally slipped into the zombie-like realm of fandom, when that happened and how I didn't notice it, but I really like Our Love To Admire. I'd concede if I had to that it's the weakest of their three albums, with some songs looking fine conceptually but executed in an irksome way (Mammoth, All Fired Up). But then I hold Antics and Turn On The Bright Lights as such banners of my musical enjoyment and existence that I should hardly call that a gripe. I love each album equally. It's important to say that they are the slowest-growers of any band I like. It took me almost two years before I could appreciate Antics.

it's definitely their weakest album

but it's not a bad album in my opinion

I like it better as an album

than Antics, purely becuase it doesn't have Public pervert, Length of love and C'mere all in a row, possibly the three most lacklustre sons they've ever recorded.

I still think it's a pretty good album, but yes, I hope there do release another record on a par with TOTBL. I think the past two albums have been too preoccupied with with mainstream pop.

See, I wouldn't say a preoccupation with pop

was a problem on OLTA, frankly if it was full of Heinrich Maneuvers I'd prefer it. There are just too many tuneless 'things' that seem to go nowhere and do nothing.

I really dislike it.

C'mere is my favourite Interpol song, go figure. It's also my mums favourite. Crazy world...

Pace Is The Trick

I love that song more than "Pioneers", Carlos does the bass feedback at the end at the shows too. I had problems with the last three songs until I walked in on the soundcheck for the last show I saw and they were running through "Lighthouse", I swear I almost started crying, it was beautiful. I love this band and think "Our Love To Admire" is a superb album.

It's not the garbage PF made it out to be

I think it's a 7/10; it has it's moments for sure, nothing too spectacular and nothing too terrible. Antics was actually more hit 'n miss for me, some great tunes, but some really shit ones, like great/shit/great/shit... Neither album a patch on TOTBL, obv.

TOTBL

is so good it's stupid.

Our Love To Admire was a very accomplished album.

Interpol suffer because of the fact they produced a shockingly impressive first album that I'm sure will always be remembered as the best thing they've done. I actually think that O.L.T.A is a more consistent effort than Antics which although it had some excellent individual tracks wasn't of the same standard. I love all three albums but if I was to put an Interpol album on right now it would still be T.O.T.B.L. even after all this time.

Interpol album ratings, (in pitchfork style). I will try and remain impartial as difficult as it is.

Turn On The Bright Lights: 9.6
Antics: 8.0
Our Love To Admire: 8.4

I did the ratings pitchfork style because otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Antics and O.L.T.A.

How would you people rate their albums?

i really like it

i made the point of staying away from every review of it i could, so went to it with a completely open mind.
i thought it was really good. yeah, it's a bit samey, but that's interpol for you! yeah, all the songs sound the same (ish) but at least it's a f*cking good one.

It's an album with many flaws

but that shows a band finally evolving a bit.
Antics was just a bad copy of an album which was re-interpreting ( with much flair and success ) a lot of old bands.

If their label let them, they might have an amazing ( and finally personnal ) fourth album in them. But they're a BIG band now, so...

In DiS style :
Turn On The Bright Lights: 8
Antics: 6
Our Love To Admire: 7

To admire but not to love

TOTBL and ANTICS are two exceptional albums. A third in a row was always going to be difficult.

I thinks its downfall for me is that its over produced and is a step up to more commercial airwaves.

Definately an album for the band to love.

That aside they still fucking rock.

Has anyone seen Carlos' new haircut - criminal!
