Yep.

You have

massive hair!

Indeed I do.

It's been longer!

...

Mr Lif
Talib Kweli
Edan
Why?
Murs

this is way too 'indie'

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Pubic Enemy - It Takes A Nation../Fear of a Black Planet
Wu Tang - their first one
GZA - Liquid Swords
Dre - The Chronic
KMD - Mr. Hood
De LA Soul - 3 Feet High..
Jay Z - American Gangster/The Blueprint
Outkast - Stankonia/Aquemini
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
any Missy Elliott.

This website is way to rockist..

Today

I bought Paul's Boutique and It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold us Back.
I own Wu-Tang Clan's first album.
I'm going to buy Liquid Swords.

I just thought if I listed stuff like Wu-Tang, I would get gangster rap artist recommendations, and I didn't want that. I think it's the worst aspect of hip hop today.

good call

Wutang is one of the best, just got a bad rep for gangsta bullcrap. For me, Wutang Forever is the best all time wutang, its a work of art.

quasimoto

All you need is here:

Instead of Mr. Hood get Black Bastards by KMD.

The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest
Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
MF DOOM - Operation Doomsday
Nas - Illmatic
Raekwon The Chef (Wu-Tang) - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die

^ YES YES YES!

it's a cream of the crop kind of selection, right there. Maybe with Clipse - HHNF thrown in for an update on cuban linx.

Dead Prez - Let's Get Free

Guaranteed to be the only album you will ever hear that advocates both the throwing of molotov cocktails at police stations, the sexual assault of high school teachers, and the eating of tofu salads while playing chess on futons within a few tracks.

Also a really really good hip hop album.

also this^

its very good indeed

yeah

it's gotta be this

ODB - Nigga Please

MF Doom - Mm...Food
Viktor Vaughn - Both Albums
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Deltron 3030 -(Self Titled?)
Handsome Boy Modelling School - Both Albums
The Coup - Steal This Album
The Coup - Party Music

oh

and the second Quasimoto one

and of course

Dr Octagon - Dr. Octagonologist (or whatever its called)

deltron 3030

is one of the great unheard albums in my opinion.
plus -the coup- genocide and juice is surely their best album

fuck dat

deltron blow

Roots Manuva

They're all quality but IMHO Run Come Save Me is probably the standout

howa bout

some pharcyde, ugly duckling, people under the stairs... all excellent

Erm

Jurassic 5
Nas
KRS One
Common
Rakim
Blackstar
Talib Kweli
Outkast

deffo

get the 2 cyne albums. quality.

Nas - Illmatic

has to be the absolute essential.
also Big L - Lifestyles of the Poor and Dangerous is one of my favourites and probably something you'll really enjoy if you like darker rap like Wu-Tang without wanting to get any of the gangster rap that, as you mentioned, pollutes hip-hop to no end.
Then for something a bit more obscure I recommend Straight Up Sewaside by Das EFX, which is one of my all time favourite rap albums and one that hardly ever gets mentioned anywhere.

oh shit

and I forgot Redman's 'Whut?! Thee Album'. It's completely light hearted but it's so much fun and a great example of how rap is at it's very best when it doesn't take itself at all seriously. Grand Puba's 'Reel to Reel' album is also similarly humorously awesome. Both are worth checking out.

Stuff that hasn't been mentioned:

Dalek - Abandoned Language
Majesticons - Beauty Party
Infesticons - Gun Hill Road
Buck 65 - Square
Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
Tes - X2
Anti-Pop Consortium - Arrhythmia
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus

Not really on the Anticon/backpack tip, but get Organized Konfusion's first two albums - undiluted genius.

let's organise!

sickest song ever.

yaaaayyy- majesticons

yes buy my album.

but seriously all the above rock- plus
little brother- chitlin circuit + get back
black milk- popular demand
9th wonder- dream merchant vol.2
braintax- panorama
murs- end of the beginning
devin the dude- waiting to inhale
saigon- ?
Wiley - playtime is over
dubbledge- rishest man in babylon
percee p- perserverance

plus any big dada

Atmosphere

Cadence Weapon
MC Lars
Sage Francis

Missy Elliot

Supa Dupa Fly/Da Real World/Miss E... So Addictive/Under Construction

It's already been mentioned,

but the Deltron 3030 album is amazing.

Also, uhm,

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
Hieroglyphics
Quannum MC's
A Tribe Called Quest
MF Doom
Masta Ace
J-Live
Prince Paul
Pharoahe Monch
Dilated Peoples

Didn't bother to read any of the above so a lot of repetition will occur thusly

Dr. Octagon
Buck 65
Saul Williams
Sage
Sole
Josh MArtinez
Brother Ali
Atmosphere
Kool Keith
Black Elvis
Eyada
Ghostface Killah

Also don't be scared of the mainstream, there's some damn good Lupe Fiasco and Jay-Z stuff out there.

Properly far out is stuff like The Philistines, Dam, Abd al Malik, not because they're exceptionally experimental it's just they rap in either french or arabic.

Beyond hip-hop and into other regions are Why? Clouddead, Hymmie's Basement.

Buck 65 though... he's where its fucking at.

I approve of this thread.

I would also checking out the roster over at Stones Throw records, they put out some amazing stuff.

Did anyone say cLOUDDEAD yet? If not, their first s/t album is essential.

Lootpack - Soundpieces Da Antidote

which is Madlib's first proper project. Then pretty much anything on Stone's Throw and check out the following:

Black Milk
Gangstarr
Edan
Slum Village
Monster Island Czars

I'd reccomend instrumental hip-hop as its what I listen to mainly

J Dilla - Donuts
Madlib - Movie Scenes 1+2

I also like

Raekwon - Only built...
Dead prez - let's get free
Madvillain was a favourite for a while
You'd probably like a tribe called quest
Oh no's album with all the guest spots is good - exodus something? I only have it on the computer

not much UK

on here. Task Force or anything on Low Life Records is a good starting point for UK hip hop.

Before you get anything...

....get these. A nice mix of the basic essentials that made hip-hop what it is today, classic old school stuff, the big 90s records and a couple of modern day gems....
Nas - 'Illmatic'
Public Enemy - 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'
Wu-Tang Clan - 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)'
KMD - 'Mr Hood'
Main Source - 'Breaking Atoms'
Boogie Down Productions - 'Criminal Minded'
Eric B & Rakim - 'Paid In Full'
MF Doom - 'Operation Doomsday'
Mobb Deep - 'The Infamous'
Raekwon - 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...'
Ghostface Killah - 'Supreme Clientele'
Gang Starr - 'Full Clip: A Decade Of Gang Starr'
The Beatnuts - 'The Beatnuts' (aka 'Street Level')
Screwball - 'Y2K'
De La Soul - '3 Feet High & Rising'
Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo - 'Wanted Dead Or Alive'

as far as

newer artists go, I'd say buy these LPs

Phat Kat - 'Carte Blanche'
Kidz In The Hall - 'School Was My Hustle'
Clipse - 'Lord Willin'
Nut-Rageous - 'Raw Nuts'
Saigon - 'Warning Shots'
Guilty Simpson - 'Ode To The Ghetto' (LP's not out until the end of March, so cop the single 'Get Riches')

I think

Hell hath no fury is the better Clipse album. Willin' is good, but feels more like a bunch of singles and club records. HHNF has more cohesion.

K-Os

Rapper from the Canadian indie scene. Definitely worth listening to
