I know variants of this have been done before but it hasn't been done for a while and someone just used the word "chillout" so it seemed appropriate.
So
"chillout"
"funky"
"laid back"
"rocking out" (I can't remember the last time I heard something described as "rocking out" that wasn't a bland acoustic singer-songwriter being equally bland but with an electric guitar for a change)
"Stunning" - Q Magazine
^ this is so accurate

"Album of the year" - NME
Ecletic
Although it doesn't necessarily put me off listening, I just think its stupid
*Eclectic
In most cases it makes little sense.
I suppose it does if you're referring to an entire album which does veer from style to style, or maybe if a song really does go all over the place (althugh maybe electic is the wrong word for that) but it does seem to be both mis-used and over-used a lot.
crap
not-very-good
Ned's Atomic Dustbinesque
Any or all of the above usually put me off. Have I missed the point?
"post rock"
(despite all my favourite music being postrock related)
I get what you mean.
If anything's described as 'antifolk' it probably puts me off wanting to hear it despite my music (and a fair few bands I like) frequently being described as antifolk...
Anything with "core" on the end
And this isn't really related, but I absolutely can't stand it when reviews use the word "sophomore" to describe a band's second album.
...
But that's what sophomore means. And "-core" is awesome and should be used wherever possible.
I know
but I think people use it just for the sake of using a big word and to sound clever. No one uses "sophomore" in real life or in any other context.
And "core" annoys me because of how people add it on to the end of genres to make some stupid meaningless genre name like postpunkemocore...what does the "core" even mean?!
"a lot"
:(
postpunkemocore only became my favourite genre when they added the core

postmathcore sounds AMAZING
Any bands actually fit this rather convoluted bill?
I forget "organic".
How could I forget "organic"? It's actually my least favourite word to describe music ever and is basically a byword for a lack of imagination in music.
what?
..
If someone describes their next album as "more organic" it basically means they're gonna make it as "real" as possible and exclude anything like electronic influences, experimental ideas or actually putting thought into what they're doing in exchange for a misguided emphasis on "letting things happen naturally"...
there's a lot to be said for "letting things happen naturally"
and the presence of "experimental ideas" is certainly not removed, in fact it might actually be increased in a lot of cases
Ok, if Oasis said their next album would be "more organic" then i'd be very wary, but for any GOOD band then it could be a massive boon
It could be
in the same way that any of the words in this thread could theoretically lead to better music. I wouldn't by any means claim there's never been a good song that could be described as either "chilled out" or "funky". But it doesn't change the fact that whenever I hear these words the alarm bells start ringing.
^This.
I've always seen "organic" as a negative.
TSH TSH
'psychedelica'
shove it
"deep"
Either in the sense of meaningful lyrics, or in the sense of 'phat' bass, both indicate terrible crimes about to unfold.
i think P!@TD got described as this
your theory proves true
This is of course at least 57 times worse
when it's someone describing their own music...
'Banging'
'Dirty bass'
summery/sunkissed
can't say why though.
^yes
once again, makes me think of girls with rubbish hair and hippy types with poor shoes.
I must disagree
as this is what I am listening to right now. And it's fucking awesome.

Do not sully my ears with these things, oh bands of MySpace.
"...on acid"
Now this
just makes me think of that Bill Bailey segment on acid: "Forms an N. Forms an N."
For some reason "perfect pop" or "perfect pop song" just instantly put me off.
"WHIMSICAL"
No thanks, cockface.
Experimental
Usually means "can't be bothered to write a song, I'll just put some weird noises on instead".
‘Return To Form’.
It’s just never true, and I’m always disappointed.
Angular
Overtly Political
What does angular mean anyway?
I've never really understood it...

I always took it to mean quite spikey, rhythmically(sp?)

IRONIC
No no no no no no no.
Bathetic, yes. Facetious, whatever. Satirical, perhaps.
But IRONIC.
That's for hipsters with bakelite glasses.
I also hate "heartfelt", but perhaps it is because I have no heart. Ironic, that.

Haunting
or anything that suggests the artist writes 'songs for the people'...blaaaaaargh.
pretty much all of this from an email i received today.
"We are a successful music duo that plays an eclectic blend of jazz, flamenco and classical with a pop twist, culminating in a sound and genre all of our own. As a result of our unique and original sound, we have received a U.S.A. Media Award for Innovation in Music... Album of the week on the David Jensen Show on the Jazz radio, airplay on the Pete Mitchell Show on BBC Radio 2 and an upcoming review in Jazzwise magazine to name but three... If you care to browse our Myspace website... you will be able to hear our music and view the comments/reviews from the thousands of friends we have connected with...According to many respected and experienced pundits in the Music/Entertainment Industry we are a dream package, with our original music and unique sound emphasized by our visually magnetic and outstanding live performances."
Maybe they should have made it clearer that they have a unique sound?
