Seems they've bought the entire sanctury building, hence the reason why its closed for refurb. This is a good thing for Birmingham and hopefully the death of the godawful Academy.

and that's why it's closed. Just in case anyone was wondering, apparently there were rumours it was closed because someone died from falling down the stairwell. This isn't true, because although my idiotic friend did fall down the stairwell, he appears to be indestructible, and was barely injured!

I heard a rumour a year ago
that the Academy would be bulldozed and the whole area would be cleaned up. It is a total dump around there.
I will miss the academy in a lot of ways though - before it re-opened it was either the Irish Centre, Jug of Ale or the NEC available. Consequently Brum missed out on loads of gigs over the years.
What I shall not miss is the shite over-priced beer there and the fact that even if a gig is sold out they hardly ever have any bar staff working.

I love that building. Hopefully it will stop bands ignoring Birmingham which seems to be happening more and more lately.
I will miss going to Panic there though.

Went to quite a few gigs there back in the early nineties, but it doesn't hold as many as the main academy room. Good news tho for Brum.

The Academy is still planned to be bulldozed though and will be at some point. Apparently the Academy group are in the process of purchasing the site of the old Dome so we wont be getting rid of them. Ahhh the Dome :)
