Which of these guitars would you choose?

I want to buy a new guitar. My guitar at present is a quite metal Ibanez RG series and I want something a bit more versatile and that looks less Steve Vai.

I was thinking
A Telecaster thinline
http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_136902306.html?utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=Froogle

I don't like the looks much but they sound great.

Or a Jazzmaster/Jaguar.
I love the way they look (admittedly cliched) but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions?
Obviously I'm going to try before I buy anyway but would be good to hear of opinions on these guitars or other things for similar price (up to say £600, 750 at a push).

Thanks

Telecasters

Are the only guitar. Buy a beautiful bautiful telecaster

mmmmm

aaahhhhh

Jazzmaster

!

oooh but not sure

about that F-Hole

never played one with one of those

american tele

not the thinline.

Try get an import and spend the rest on pedals.

won't an American one

cost a couple of grand?

no.

A friend bought one back from new york for $700.

Personally the price of guitars in this country is fucking mental. I've only ever bought second hand/imported. I just cannot justify shop prices.

I love the shape of a Jag

but couldn't find one I wanted for a small ebnough sum - got a Toronado in the end, and it's well tasty, and has a bit of the Jaguar / Jazzmaster slant to it (and quite a jazz sound).

But if I had the choice of the above, I'd go for a Jazzmaster. Jags are nice, but I mash up my hands on all the switches and toggles.

Can you try them first?

Jazzmasters are a bit more delicate than a Tele, there's more to go wrong and the trem is well annoying but they do look beautiful.

If you're going to be hurling it about get a Tele.

I use this:

It's awesome.

my mates got a thinline

and it's great, nice to play and sounds pretty good.

My other mate has a tele from the late 60s or early 70s and it souunds AMAZING though

with that money...

... i'd get a usa standard tele- they sound great hardly ever go out of tune, are great! Then buy the uber cheap fender mustang with the rest of the money- which were used muchos by sonic youth and look a bit like the jaguar- hence kurt cobain's self designed "jagstang" guitar!

Fender Jazzmaster

is the most versatile of the guitars you've got listed there. I don't see why the looks of a Jazzmaster would be considered more cliched than the ubiquitous Tele.

Burns Sonic

the kind of Tele shaped one.

Yes, it's ugly, but it sounds amazing.

i fucking love my burns

shouldnt be so mean to it really

They're so overlooked as well...

As soon as I'd played on note on that Burns I knew I had to have it though, and not just because of the ego trip of it looking like I've got my own signature model.

they do look

slightly rubbish, but thats kinda charming. check mine in my profile pic.

but, they sound so so so nice. kind of stratty but with more umph (yay to piss poor explainations)

Aha! A Marquee!

Very nice. The Sonic is more like a Tele, but with a particular pickup selection it turns into the most beautiful bell-like thing I've ever played.

getting tempted by the J Mascis Jazzmaster

http://www.dv247.com/invt/45269/

Does this look good to anyone else? Signature guitars are bad generally but I do like the look of this.

i cant believe

youre prepared to spend £600+ yet looks seems to play such a big part of the decision?

I say get the BLUE one.

why?

it's important but then of course the way it sounds is too. It's the combination and there is no way I will buy a guitar I haven't tried.
I think guitars look beautiful and I want one that makes me dribble.

never played a jazzmaster

but would go with a USA tele any day.

I've got a 1992 and it sounds incredible.

cant believe you think they're ugly! yeah looks is a bit of it - just a little bit though when you're spending big money

when I said looks

I specifically meant the thinline one with the F hole. I actually love the Telecaster shape generally but hate black/white contrast. One with a black or at least non-white pick guard would I imagine look really good.

I have owned all 3

they are all great guitars but very different to each other.

Tele 72 thinline has a great neck well balanced pups with a rich warm tone still capable of creating the famous percussive rythm tones.

Jag's are a very bright sounding guitar, also have a shortscale neck. You will need to change the bridge to a mustang one.

Jazzmaster - well its my current guitar, great neck flat radius pups are ok , sort of an overwound strat pup under the case.

I'd say buy guitars secondhand & save your money.

this ^^

my favourite guitar are always 2nd hand;

my 1970's Eko acoustic is a dream! Whereas my 2006 Takamine Eg350s sucks ass

I have a Jazzmaster...

had it for over 10 years, despite the wanky name its just a great guitar. Like other posters have mentioned its very versatile, easy to get to grips with and has the most amazing sound.

The thinlines are real nice guitars too, but I think the Jazzmaster can do more

thinline teles are nice,

but not at that price. you can get them from ebay for less than 300. i would never pay that amount of money for a mexican made guitar, given that you can easily find american or japanese made instruments in the 250-400 bracket.

I've got a Jazzmaster...

... and I love it to bits. It is very verstatile but my two criticisms would be:
- The pickups are full sounding, so you'll never get that really dry 'snap' that you get from a regular Tele. They're powerful pickups but can lack bite.

- You don't have individual volume controls for the different pickups. Not a big problem but it's quite cool to be able to switch between pickups and have different volumes or even tone settings.

As for it being troublesome to keep in tune, I replaced the original bridge with a new one with rollers, keep the grooves in the nut well lubed with pencil lead and stretch the strings in as soon as I put them on. I use the whammy quite a lot and have no problem.

If I could afford another guitar, I'd have a regular Tele, for sure.

Right, enough geeking out...

Nearly

I'd say go for the '72 Thinline - the one with the two humbuckers. It looks lovely and will be nice and versatile too.

I have a thinline tele

and also have frequently played a jaguar. Personally while I love the look of the jaguar, i don't really use the trem arm so it suits what I use it for better. I have had various others (Strat/ SG/ as stated before a Jaguar) but i always end up going back to my battered old thinline...

teles

are geek chic right now, like ur ibanez was back when fred durst was kool.

they have 1 sound.tele sound.

I'd go for somthing more diverse personally, like SG or studio.

Tele's are not in fashion

They just happen to be a great guitar, whether you are buying a straight up standard, custom, deluxe or your thinline. Always avoid Ibanez unless you are playing metal anyway.

uh huh ;)

and tight pants are just cos were all now not into wasteful lifestyles.

also if you look at non metal ibanez's you'd be suprised. AX120 for example.

Dont bother with the Jag unless it is

made in the USA. I have got a jag made in Japan, and although Japanese manufactured Fenders are supposed to be pretty good, mine is a pile of shit. Seriously, do not bother if it is anything other than USA made.

Not sure about the Tele.

Besides, when are we having that game of tennis?

it's a good point

hopefully when I stop leaving work stupidly late. Though of course fantasising/posting about guitars doesn't help.

well

http://www.gretschguitars.com/briansetzer/

gretsch guitars make me do a sex wee.

My Mex

tele is a peach, so don't ignore the mexican option!

what's "funny"

is that i've always played fendery gibson-y indie boy guitars, but the other day i tried out the steve vai signature ibanez or whatever it is and i thought it was fucking SWEET. so light and playable and stuff

this one? looks lovely

http://www.harmony-central.com/ProductImages/Large/000009225.jpg

Ibanez are really really playable though (in my limited experience) generally cos they're designed for shreddy solos and noodle and don't have the weight of history so can concentrate of just making them practical. I have an Ibanez bass and the neck is amazing.

ha no

it was just a slim, glossy black guitar, no hole in the body and "steve vai" written on one of the frets.

both beautiful choices

I'd go for a Jaguar.

I'm currently customising my squire to look a bit like a Jaguar - using a nice black/grey/white tortoiseshell patterned pick guard, with a Kinman Hx nexk pickup (already installed), a nice chunky humbucker on the bridge (dunno yet, about to research) and something... strange in the middle pick up.

Should be good.
