So, I am listening to The Knife - Silent Shout and it is blowing my mind. So, I decided to check DiS on it, and they give it 10/10, which at the moment seems right.
But, my old Magazine, Q, gave it... well... 1/5.
How far has you music taste came in a few years?
http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/knife/silentshout?q=the%20knife
I think 10/10 is OTT
but 2/10 is absurd, also.
I used to read Kerrang alot. They gave Mono's 'Gone' 1/5 and said it was dull. However, they gave Minus's 1st and 2nd albums 5/5 which is good
NB on metacritic:
Q can't give things 10% because they work on a 5-star scale, so it's 20%. Also their averages are oftentimes WAY off.
teh averages are weighted
so that if NME gives it 10 out of ten and, um, tiny mixtapes gives it 1/10, it will get more than 55%
aaaaaah, i see
that's a bit of a rubbish way to do things is it not?
"THEY"
What is it with all this "they give it this..."? It's he or she gave it that rating! Reviews in magazines are done by a single journalist.
they may be written by a single journalist
but the review seems to reflect the view on that particular band/musician held by the entire magazine. plus, reviewers don't say "i" in reviews - they instead write "we".
reviews in magazines are held as a collective view, which, of course, can lead to some contradiction amongst writers.
-
I'm pretty sure that on Pitchfork the journalist writes the review and then the editor decides what mark it gets, it might be teh same in other places.

I was once told by a Q scribe
that he was told to review a gig by *insert god awful dully earnest singer songerwriter here* and to make sure it was favourable. So he sat in the bogs through said gig with a novel, went home and made up his review.
as far as mono go
gone is a dull record. nothing much ever happens and the songs are ridiculously long for what they contain
minus?
or minus the bear?
most mags are crap
i rarely read anything printed other than Uncut. seems to have by far the best most interesting articles. Q and kerrang are crap. crap crap crap. altho i used to read K! every week religiously. (they did have 3 really good articles i can remember: one with trent reznor talking about asshole DJs, 1 with eddie vedder and 1 with Fugazi) so i cant hate K! really. they have done some good
but, im rambling. internet mags are better. i just found http://www.stylusmagazine.com <----ace!
It's a shame..
...that Stylus has ceased to be.
My fave Kerrang article
was an interview with Mortiis, where he was in his shed in the woods.
I used to read RAW
it was AWESOME
^ i remember that one
more embarrassingly is that some of Mortiis's stuff is alright
dang
yeh mortiis with his full body freak costume whatever that was.
shame that stylus has stiopped, i only found it yesterday!
Mortiis knows not of any costume
for he is a troll.
The formula for working out how good a Mortiis album is as follows:
s(OG + w) = Mortiis
--------
d
where:
s = skulls used (cubic feet)
O = orcs
G = goblins
w = warlock coefficient (spells/second)
d = distance from a dungeon (yards)
Do you visit Games Workshop much?
With increasing rental prices in city centres AND the huge rise in online fantasy gaming, I don't understand why they haven't gone under.
I did actually drive past the games workshop factory
this weekend. I was quite disappointed there wasn't loads of dwarves running around.
Used to read Kerrang
from age 14-15ish then Q for a bit then the NME for a bit with The Fly on occasion coz its free.
Now nothing (including DiS really - I have friends that would disown me for being on these boards)
yeh
including pitchfork. at least this site doesnt have the sort of lester bangs rip-off pen-wankery pitchfork is becoming famous for.
its not too bad being on these boards tho. least it gives me something to do at work that doesnt include a concealed ak in a trenchcoat.
Yeah
I like that its faster moving than other boards I frequent
i thought
this thread was called 'how much i have charged: magazines' and looked forward to shady newsagents bragging about their best scams.
there used to be one in brighton that taped his closed so you cdn't read unless you bought. not that ay sane person wd, after it had been sellotape-scarred.
rocksound
cover many new bands and introduce me to lots of interesting music. dont let the cover-stars put you off (they need make some moneys). their reviews are often very reliable.
I only really read Alternative Press these day
And I don't really pay much attention to reviews unless I've never heard of the band.
"one day...
...i got fifteen quid for antiques monthly. 'cause i said it was collectible."
Is Artrocker any good?
Artrocker is dreadful
Embarrassingly bad writing, or at least was when I last picked up a copy. Unless they have sacked their whole writing staff within the past year and got rid of that right wing twat who runs it then I'd say it is still best avoided.
Good old Q
They seem to have a habit of getting things wrong. I remember seeing this one a few years ago:
http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/sleaterkinney/woods?q=sleater-kinney
Although I'm glad to say I never bothered with Q. Always been rubbish. At least NME was good once.
never been a religious reader of music magazines
but I do pick up Plan B occasionally as well as The Fly or The Stool Pigeon - The Fly is pretty poor but I quite like the Stool Pigeon. Its layout is eye-punishing stuff, though.
Anyone else used to read Melody Maker?
.
Occasionally
I was thinking recently about how my taste in magazines has evolved as the writing generally has deteriorated:
NME
Q Select
Uncut
Blogs & Broadsheets
DiS
DiS is pretty much the only place you can get informed comment on all types of music without the Pitchfork-style pretentiousness...
Plan B's pretty good too!
Each issue has the potential to potentially bankrupt me, they're so good at convincing me of a record's brilliance, even if I've never heard of it.
I'd say DiS and Pitchfork are pretty even on pretentiousness.
I probably prefer Pitchfork actually, they do a greater variety of music and don't have bizarre biases - like The Maccabees, Foals and Los Campesinos - that DiS suffers under.
Anyway, I also started with Kerrang! before they went just a tad too teeny, or I grew up, whatever. I read NME, Q, Rock Sound, Metal Hammer and loads of others for a few issues, but I don't any now.
The winner was BANG, however. Best magazine ever.
I must admit
I did like Bang also, probably should have thrown that in after Uncut. Shame it went so quickly...
seconded
i have been in constant mourning ever since the demise of Bang. Never found a really decent music magazine since, but Rock-a-rolla is a good shout for me.
I was into Bang...
..and then they voted the Darkness as best album 2003. The first 4 months were good, the rest was an embarrassing flail for readers (any readers).
I look at Uncut- best reviews. Pitchfork is good for downloads and things, not journalism. Dis hits the spot for me pretty well.
Saying that
Not sure how Q got in there, it was always pretty shit...
how much have i changed
i used to read q & nme, then i read careless talk, then i read plan b and wire. now i only read feminist zines.
i only read laura_wolf's blog
There isn't a mag that gets it right all the time.
Most don't get it right a tenth of the time. You're right about "Silent Shout" though. The only reason I post on DiS is that they had Liars and No Age in the top 10 of the 2007 top 50 and Deerhunter at 11 when everone else was going bonkers for Arcade Fire- DiS did have some glaring oversights and some real ripe shite in there too though- but I forgive.
Anyone else read 'Word'
Well written, if a bit middle aged.
Can be bloody hard to find.
silent shout
is one of the most definite 10/10's of the decade.
what you meant to say was
http://tinyurl.com/2sy7jq
My music taste
has come on leaps and bounds. It feels like the music I'm into now is so authentic and pioneering, whereas the stuff I was listening to two years ago is just utterly bland in comparison.
The best reads from youth to now
probably read something lie:
NME
Melody Maker
Select
Bang
Stylus
DiS
It notable that half of those are now longer around, with t'Internet driving most decent writers online.
Like we were telling you it was two years ago :)
One
of the best albums ever.
It blows my mind every time I listen to it.
I used to read Q when I was a student (not too many years ago). I didn't quite realise how crap it was back then. I think the turning point was when Coldplays's X&Y got a ridiculously OTT review. It read like it was written before they had even heard the album.
Now I don't read magazines too often - the internet is more convenient and more up to date. If I do buy mags, I tend to buy them according to who is on the cover...
The X&Y review is memorable as I read it thinking
it would change my life when it really didn't. You realise how much of a hard-on they have for U2 nad you can see why it got 5/5, cause it sounds so much like U2 it is a shit tribute album.
I started off reading Kerrang!
I'd buy it every week, first thing on a Wednesday morning. Then I started buying Rock Sound, which was much better as it came with a free, and a result got into bands like These Arms Are Snakes, Isis, Converge, Cave In etc...then I stopped buying magazines and just got hold of free fanzines such as Fracture. These days I buy Wire magazine from time to time, and maybe Rock A Rolla when I can get hold of it.
Magazines
I went from Kerrang to Artrocker (from when it first started) to Plan B + an occasional look through The Wire these days.
I have read Mojo / Uncut / The Word pretty much throughout.
The Word is easily the best written if a tad middle aged. Uncut is a bit naff.
NME and Q aren't worth looking at.
I live in a newsagent.
I like
Big Cheese magazine, and Rock Sound is alright. I like that they have an entire reviews section for 'Darkwave'. I don't think I've ever heard a Darkwave band, or even heard of the genre outside of Rock Sound..
Uncut used to be good
As I've said before, the makeover didn't do it any favours. The Word is well written but unfortunately a little too smug at times, Mojo would be great if it could stop putting the same half dozen artists (you know who they are) on the cover every other issue.
I never read Stylus
But I've just been reading some of those pieces from when it closed - man, they had some great writers if that's anything to go by...
As someone who occasionally
writes/wrote for Artrocker, I love the look of the new mag, but accept that the writing is atrocious.
The problem is that the layout looks professional, but the content is pure fanzine.
And, like all magazines and sites, they have their favourite acts.
I also think that my own tastes have got much more underground, even than the 'alternatives' offered up either here or in the music mags.
jockey slut
is the best magazine ever, i reckon.
gutted that finished.
stool pigeon and fact were good, are they still going?
Stool Pigeon and FACT are still going
to my knowledge.
I miss jockey slut too, I can remember a girl at uni looking confused when I had a copy in my room and thought it was some kind of dj porn thing..
YES!
Stool Pigeon is pretty ace. It's kind of like the NME used to be about 15 years ago before it turned into Smash Hits. Plan B is good too though Everett True and his band of art school intellectuals are a bit much at times...
My old guitarist was German
He used to get this magazine called Visions sent over every month or whatever.
I liked it, despite the fact that my German language skills are pretty second-rate. It had a really nice simple, clean layout, no mega OMG MCR! covers, and covered a nice wide range of music.
I've still never managed to find a music magazine in this country that I've been entirely convinced by. The more mainstream magazines are all a wee bit too much about trying to "out-shout" each other with lairy looking covers.
The metal magazines can be OK sometimes, but I generally tend to disagree with a lot of the bands they favour, with them always seeming to go for the "if it's got more drums and faster guitars, it must be good" approach.
I keep wanting to like Rock-A-Rolla, but I found it to be pretty badly put together, and a bit tedious to read to be honest.
Maybe I'll just print off some pages from DiS every couple of weeks... (on the work printer of course!)
i wouldnt waste my time
reading shite reviews in shite mags, e.g, NME, Q. Read the Stool Pigeon (i think it's only available in London?!) real people with real interest for the music write this, not scenester twats chasing up the latest 'celeb' and ligging. (peaches shitdoff)
i like finding negative reviews
for albums i really like on metacritic, like... http://www.drawerb.com/2004/01/27/the-unicorns-who-will-cut-your-hair-when-were-gone-alien8/
"I'm just astounded by how bad this album actually is. It's a complete wanking nerdfest..."
I'm lucky
to be from N.Ireland cos we have the best music magazine i've ever read.
it covers really good music not dissimilar to dis, its really funny, has brilliant features n you get a really good cd every month!
Its called AU Magazine. It has now branched out to the whole of Ireland due to popularity. You should really check it out.
This month it features Nick Cave, Fighting With Wire, Be Your own pet, operator please, Youthmovies, The Fall, MGMT etc.
Alternative Ulster?
Yeah, it's great, my friend sends it to me!
Amazin!
yeah thats it only as its now sold all over Ireland they are jus callin it AU Magazine...they also put on club nites/gigs etc. I think its only £25 a year for a mag n a cd every month.
oh the times
I'll read anything me
even The Fly
if drunk
even The Wire if I am hot for having all the fun ripped form music
but over the decades, I have been genuinely hot for
smash hits
record mirror
sounds
lime lizard
melody maker
Q NME
Select
Uncut (until they started cut and pasting prev issues)
Spin
Mojo (after they stopped revolving the same 4 covers)
PLaylouder
Drownedinsound
Careless Talk / Plan B
Pitchfork
Word
I occasionally read Q at school
If I read the phrase "rock Gods" in the same sentence as "U2" or "Oasis", I will silently scream.
