Do I buy Miss Machine or Calculating Infinity.

Ok, I bought Ire Works a while back and I'm now really getting it, although it took me a little while, I think that can be expected. (I went in blind, so to speak).

Anyway which DEP album should I buy next and why?
I would also like to know how the two albums are different to help me decide.

Thanks. :)

Miss Machine

for sure.

MM is more experimental, a la Ire Works (perhaps not with quite so much diversity). Calculating Infinity is great, but more straight-up heaviness.

Ok thanks.

Is there any question I ask on here that you are unable to answer? You are my little knowledgeable music machine, are you a machine? Yes, you're not a real person, it all makes sense now. DiS created you. :)

I'm Mr. Machine

the forthcoming Dillinger EP

Why not ask the question?

I'm bored at work, so I should find out something useful, to hopefully help me avoid the wrong purchase.

A safety wink was not necessary because you posted "Is a safety wink necessary", I'm sure you understand.

I think I just have a different attitude to you on such matters

The best discoveries are the ones you make all by yourself (well, not completely because that isn't technically possible) and I like the feeling of a gamble paying off enough to risk it

^ gambling can

bite you in the ass though.

I like discovering but also like recommendations. I am equilibrium.

I hate the way people on this board

can get down on people for asking the question - 'where should I start with...' I have discovered some really excellent albums this way and surely this whole site is for endless debates about the minutae of which record is superior?

oh and

Calculating infinity ftw!

I hate the way people on this board

take everything so seriously

Well I'm still scarred from

the battering I took in asking for a little assistance with 'The Fall'. They've released about 900 albums and help was appreciated.

Yeah, most of us have taken a battering at some point

Besides, my post was about Galactic doing this for seemingly every purchase he makes!

Not quite.

Otherwise I would be doing a thread like this ever day.

I probably do 2 a week on average, I did more in the past. I usually just ask for general recommndation rather than specific ones if that's what you mean.

Although if I have a good success rate recommendation wise, then why not continue doing it.

So not literally everything you buy then?

Who would have thought I didn't mean it literally?

You're obviously not being completely serious.

I accept that, although you still seem to be criticising me for my prefered method of discovering, "what to buy"? Why do you even care about such things?

I'm not overly bothered, it's just a little pointless that's all.

I'm not criticising you

All forum posts are pointless

Calculating Infinity.

Calculating Infinity.
Calculating Infinity.
Calculating Infinity.

^ please justify this

whilst i do love both, i think if you've only just gotten into Ire Works, Miss Machine is the natural next step. You need to learn to crawl before you run

i agree

it took me so long to get into calculating infinity when it first came out.. i hated it at first.

^me too

I actually took it back at one point. Definitely Miss Machine, then Calculating Infinity, and you HAVE to buy the DEP/Mike Patton E.P (I can't remember the name of it).

irony is a dead scene

what an ep that is.. when good dogs do bad things.. tune

You've reminded me.

When you say straight-up heavyness you mean straight-up mathcore heavyness without the experimental randomness, yes? Not just a metallic hardcore album without the unusual song structures. This is what I asume you mean anyway.

("yes, that is good"

doesn't make sense. I wish i weren't monolingual)

Calculating Infinity.

Calculating Infinity.
Calculating Infinity.
Calculating Infinity.

Yeah.

I really didn't get Miss Machine

I have no love for the (not very) new singer. I don't know if I didn't give the album enough of a chance, but loved CI so much, I just found some of MM - especially bits with proper choruses - to be completely tame and the music much less visceral.

I guess it's nice when a band evolves, but I just loved the earlier incarnation too much to accept it. meh.

just to put it out there

Calculating Infinity is in my top 20 albums of all time, the only metal album too. Once you get it, there is nothing that even comes close to its genius. Is all about the hypnotic rhythms that never repeat and the intensity of it all, is really perfect. However in becoming a Calculating Infinity obsessive, Miss Machine seemed tame in comparison and was a bit of a let down. Of course I realised it was a completely different album in time but still, Ire Works feels like a much improved version of Miss Machine with better songs and more of a nod to CI's raw intensity with a new angle of glitchy electronics.

Go for Calculating Infinity, it needs to be heard!

erm

why not buy both?then listen to one for a while then listen to the other for a while.i only own miss machine and ire works so i cant really comment but miss machine is a brilliant album.this doesnt help i dont think

I might end up buying both.

I would like to take the next logical step however. I never actually asked which one was superior. Miss Machine seems like the way forward, from what Medulla said.

Most people have just posted their opinion on which one is the better album, which is fine but not as useful in terms of a logical progression. This doesn't necessarily mean I'll prefer Miss Machine to Calculating Infinity, it does seem like the best bet however.

in which case

calculating infinity will challenge you and is a step forward, i reckon Miss Machine is a pre-cursor to Ire Works, getting the new line up tight so would be a step backwards or maybe to the side. The 'Irony is a Dead Scene' EP might be the next step, try that.

i see what you mean

but the most logical progression would of been to buy calculating infinity and then miss machine and then ire works.but i suppose working backwards would probably be best after that.my boss is off again so its a day of posting for me :)

*gulps*

i prefer Miss Machine to Ire Works

^me too

but i think in 10 years time people will still be trying to understand ire works (me included) i "get" miss machine a lot more whereas ire works is fucking crazy.i know what i want to say but i cant seem to find the words to say it properly but i hope you understand me

Yeah, i get you

i really like both, so it's not like i'm slating IW.

I know it wasn't you who said it, but i don't think IW sounds tighter than MM at all - it's more experimental and diverse, but i can't say i find MM at all sloppy.

I wish i was allowed my mp3 player at work, i want to listen to DEP

(how many acronyms have i used in this thread??!??!?!?)

no its not sloppy at all

there are some rhythms on IW that i just cant get.that was what i was getting really with that comment that maybe in 10 years time i will finally be able to get.i know this makes me sound a bit daft but sometimes i just cant get a rhythm.especially with dillinger.but i will get there in time.

I bought Ire Works because that was the one I heard about.

It had only recently come out, there was a review on this site etc.

^it was a good choice

very good choice

I agree with this

I really think that calculating infinity is the definitive metal album. It's just got absolutely everything!
I'm struggling to find another metal album (other than Ire Works) that is as tantalisingly good right now!
Get some balls! get calculating infinity! ha ha

Miss Machine

calculating infinity is less poppy

ok, so they don't write pop music, but the structures of miss machine are more accessible. you will probably get a load of DEP fans telling you calculating is better, such people may argue that they shouldn't have singing on their albums, nor should they have industrial style electro tunes, rather than the more math-style electronics of calculating.

basically what i'm no where near saying is that they are both great in slightly different ways, going backwards through a discography is often harder than forward, but eventually you WILL love them both, possibly calculating more.

This is helpful.

Although now I'm really confused, maybe it doesn't matter which one I buy, it seems they both sound great just different. I'm sure buying one and being disappointed won't put me off buying the other one.

Surely I've done the hard work getting into Ire Works though, it's usually much easier with albums if you already like the band from a previous purchase.

you definately have done the hard work

getting into ire works.i found miss machine relatively easy to get into compared with ire works so you wont have a problem there

yeah you really should get them both

and it is always diffficult hearing a new DEP album for the first time, but they ARE all great

I found Ire Works and Miss Machine

about equal in terms of digestion time. The former is definitely more diverse though.

Both are worth adding to your collection at some point for sure, i guess it depends on what step you wish to take next

Both it is then.

My bank balance will not be pleased.

^ debit card

being put to good use then, i see

uh oh, i replied in the same minute again

...SHANDYHOLMES will tell me off :(

calculating infinity

for sure.

It has no money on it yet.

It will take a battering from the moment I transfer my money from my other account this Saturday.

the speed of my replies

has made me realise, that i will never disclose to anyone on here which company i work for. Imagine if we fell out over some sort of listing process and you e-mailed the IT department and told them to monitor me.

are you doing ANY work?

seriously though.my boss is off and im having trouble keeping up with the posts

I sent 2 emails

and i've made a phonecall.

I also ate an apple and went to the water cooler about 4 times.

My job sucks, it's the worst year off ever

yeah my year out is shit as well

i think you have already been to uni havent you?

yes, i graduated last year

and - in grand tradition - didn't know what i wanted to do.

Awaiting post-grad application to be processed at present, but have another 6 months of this crud. Still, money to check DiS, the news, cinema listings, grade movies on lovefilm.com etc...

you are a serious douche if you believe

in buying MM first because CI is "harder to get into". Surely any album can be hard to get into in the right cirumstances? CI, in my opinion, is in the top 5 heavy albums ever, and if it takes you a while to get into it then it'll be worth it in the end. MM is good but is less mindblowing, if you want to hear something jawdropping, get CI.

^ EEEERRRR <buzzer noise>

too late - above post reads that GS3 will be buying both.

Yeah,

but it was in response to you saying "please justify this". I would have replied up there but no-one would've noticed. And I don't really care what GS3 buys, no harm in continuing the debate anyway ;)

I just think MM is the natural

next step from IW, if you've bought the latter before the former.

It all depends what you got into first, i reckon. Most people i know who've liked them from the start say CI is better, but alot of people who started circa MM find that direction of the band better.

true.

i got into DEP around the time of CI, so i guess i first associated them with that style. i just really prefer dimitri to greg, though greg is a great frontman...

^ theory proves true again

(not said with arrogant intent)

I just think it depends on what you first associate them with.

But we are in agreement that both are stunning, which is all that matters, because we're both correct

you're wrong

i hate you

calculating infinity

because i prefer Dimitri

That wasn't my original reason anyway.

It made more sense as a natural progression, according to people who didn't just say which one was the best.

You should learn to read things more carefully before you post things that make no sense.

I'm buying both now anyway.

P.S. I'm one of the least likely people to buy an album just because it's "easier to get into".

Calculating Infinity,its a must

its got to be,its an album that set the bench mark for any other tech bands and even dillinger are yet to emulate it.

Don't care that it's too late

but yeah Calculating Infinity. Why? Because it's fucking better!

^^This^^

if you read the above posts

you would see that GS3 was after WHY it was better, rather than just an opinion, and subsequently decided on getting both anyway.

Oooooohh!

Well getting both is probably the best option.

But for the record

CI is flawless, I still remember when I first heard it and thought: 'What the FUCKING HELL is this?' It sounds liek nothing else.

The atmosphere is eerie as hell, especially the hidden track. It takes no prisoners at any point. The production is weird, but suits the music perfectly and Dimitri's obscure lyrics leave plenty of room for interpretation.

MM on the other hand could have been done by 100 other bands. (Admittedly, because those 100 bands had ripped DEP off.) The production is a bit ball-less. Greg's lyrics about parties and all that shit kind of annoy me.

It's still better than 99% of metal out there, but not a patch on CI.

Ire Works is a hell of an improvement musically.

yes, but this probably goes

with my theory of "if you heard CI first you thought MM was diluted, if you heard MM first you prefer their latter-day work"

Having heard Ire Works first, it'd make more sense for someone to get MM next

^ spot on

the disapointment of MM coming from CI is inevitable, and coming from IW i think MM will dissapoint, its like a lesser version

^ each to their own, as always

but i think Miss Machine is alot better than Ire Works.

Maybe it all depends upon which you listened to first then? Could this be a new theory?

...

Stupidest question ever.

Why?

*Because the answer is obvious.

*Because I should take a random guess as it's more fun.

*Because I should buy both, which I've now decided to do.

*Because you like being awkward.

...

Those are actually all four correct reasons.

10 points!

Who's the penis that revived the thread..

..and posted aomewhere in the middle where I can't be asked to look for it.

just illegally download both of them

why else did God make Soulseek ?
