This has probably been asked before, but why do people call Arcade Fire "THE" Arcade Fire, when, erm, that isn't their name?
I've been told that they were called THE Aracde Fire when they released that first EP (although the re-release of the EP says Arcade Fire) but why do people still use the "THE"? What does it really prove, that they know that a few years ago the band had a "THE" in front of their name? Wowee they must be a REAL fan then.
im not sure
if it matters my friend
(giggle) ^
but
i would say THE arcade fire
um
who cares? It's 'the' and not 'the', doesn't make any difference.
Only things that do matter are when people say The Editors, or The Manic Street Preachers, both of whom have never had a 'the'.
Pixies always had big trouble with this.
like
THE red hot chili peppers
like
the red hot chili pipers
they doesn't afraid of anything.
But
people seem to use a THE in front of Arcade Fire very deliberately, as if they're really trying to prove something. Like "hahaha, the broadsheets don't use a "the", but us, the real fans who knew about them THREE YEARS AGO do!"
Or am I simply paranoid?
it just sounds better
i think! i say both..maybe you're just a bit para, yeah
The Stereophonics
Used to really bug me until I MTFU.
[insert tedious story about "The Delays"]
Whoa...
I actually noticed myself say 'the arcade fire' a few days ago. I didn't kill myself for it. I'm happy with how it all panned out really.
They used to be The Arcade Fire
and have now lost the article. In the way that The Dillinger Escape Plan are now just Dillinger Escape Plan.
So there's your answer. I would use The Arcade Fire, probably
Additionally,
if you look in the sleeve of Funeral, it says The Arcade Fire too.
i think when people say "they used to be called 'the arcade fire'"
they're just trying to conjure up an indie snob-esque answer. when in reality, it just feels like a name that should have a 'the' at the start of it, so people are compelled to say 'the arcade fire'. albeit that they're wrong.
it really pissed me off a wee while ago with wikipedia, when you'd type in "arcade fire" and it would say "redirected from 'arcade fire'". so, hating the "redirected from..." as i do, i'd go back and type in "the arcade fire" and it would reply "redirected from 'the arcade fire'". RRRRRRRRRWIKIRGAYBUTAWESOME
ultimately, however
it doesn't matter
^ but they inarguably did used to be
check the sleeve for Funeral. They printed it there themselves (actually, the sleeve designer did, but they'll have approved it)
i'm not saying that they did or didn't
just that it seems to be the main reason people give when called out for saying "the arcade fire".
but really, it doesn't matter. the only problem i'd have is if someone called them 'the arctic fire' or 'the arcade monkeys', or something like that
blahcetera
I know someone who did this.
Stupid girl.
Well
I'd say Arcade Fire, it being the name of the band and everything.
^ so you've said
but they USED to have the article.
If you're being so God-damn anal about it, you should technically be calling them 'The Arcade Fire' pre-Neon Bible and 'Arcade Fire' post-NB.
Now wheesht
The problem is.
Some bands have "The" at the start of their name. "The" is also a conjunctive word used in sentences.
Someone might say "I really like the Manic Street Preachers" even if they know there is no "the" in their band name. It doesn't flow properly without "the".
Although I have no opinion on whether or not Arcade Fire have a "the", I would say not but I really don't know.
^Yes, this.
.
this is almost like poetry.
so beautifully correct, i could weep.
Buzzcocks
Anyone who say The Buzzcocks is clearly deranged.
never mind
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAsigh
at the end of the day
who gives a shit.stop being so anal about it
shit. anal. lol.
:)
^ chortle chortle
medulla you cant be getting ANY work done
you replied in the same fucking minute as he posted it!
and got paid for it all the while
:)
haha
touche my friend, touche (is that how you spell touche?)
it is now, eh?
Brilliant.
He'll be replying before I post next.
^what?
i am confused
He will post a reply..
..to one of my posts before I've even posted it.
Editors
apparently once came fifth in a poll of "Best bands beginning with 'The'", which is hilarious because a) their name does not include a "The", and b) they don't really deserve fifth in any poll of goodness, no matter how stupid.
more annoying:
http://www.last.fm/music/Arcade+Fire
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Arcade+Fire
for some reason, even though all my mp3s are tagged just as "Arcade Fire", certain songs appear on my charts as "The Arcade Fire". WHHFDHDFJJFJRRAAARGGH
hmmm
it's dirty projectors all over again!
The The
are a good 'The' band.
But me, I likes The Foals, they roolz!
You got it wrong.
It's The The The !
In a related matter.
Does anyone else delete the "the" from all bands they stick on their MP3 players/iPods so there isn't loads of bands beginning with the letter t, that don't really begin with t?
It would really annoy me otherwise.
No
Because iPods r clever and overlook "The"
^
go iPods
what if
you have music by The The on your iPod? does it fall into an iVoid?
No
but the fact that it files 'The' under 'T' really does annoy me. I think i'd be more annoyed if i saw "Mars Volta", "Fugees", "Fiery Furnaces", "Vines", etc though
It has to be done.
I understand what you meen but I find this less annoying than the other way.
...
Mars Volta, The
Fugees, The
Fiery Furnaces, The
etc, The
^ that would annoy me too
i'm a hard man to please.
But your idea is a good one
I couldn't cope with this.
.
Steve Lamacq
is the worst at adding an extraneous 'the'. I've never heard anybody else refer to 'The Doves'.
Good god!
Find something else to worry about.
The EP was by "The Arcade Fire", the lyrics book inside Funeral has "The Arcade Fire" everywhere, including credits.
Last.FM has 5 million plays for "Arcade Fire" and "The Arcade Fire" have 22 million.
"Although there has been speculation over whether a preceeding 'The' is necessary before the band's name, during their 2007 Glastonbury Festival set, Win introduced the band as "The Arcade Fire", which suggests that this is the name the band favour."
Do you really think people are that sad that they care about the exact name as much as you?
6music
are on a wind-up with this subject, every band that doesn't have a 'the' in, gets a 'the' before their name, on your radio screen. every band that has a 'the' at the start of their name, the 'the' gets removed.
^ i only care because i was right
:)
I can't believe
that this thread has garnered 50 replies, 51 now, damn!
People
always put 'the' in front of my band's name. I dislike it, but what can you do. It doesn't help that our myspace address had to have 'the' as some git was squatting in the one we wanted (and has now left it free again... much to our chagrin)
Nobody was a fan of AF from the ep
One of you geniuses posted Funeral tracks a couple months before it was released.
This here forum board is entirely responsible for the band's popularity (not that silly 9.7 by that other zine).
Re: The AF or AF. Who cares.
You are a DiSer. You can feel smug knowing you were there first. OK, there it is. :)
same with Klaxons
they don' have a 'the' either.
but with arcade fire, if they had a 'the' to start with it's totally understandable that people still refer to them as that.
i remember watching
the live radio show thingy they did - KRCW?
The presenter asked them the same thing,( "the, or no the") as one of his colleagues had interviewed Cocteau Twins and had made a mistaske. At the start of the interview his colleague had introduced them as THE Cocteau Twins; they apparently only gave one word answers after that.
not 'The' Editors...
Except it sounds so unnatural saying just 'Editors'. Sounds like you come from the north when said properly.
The the...
had a similar problem a few years ago...they started out as The The The, but dropped the first one...or is it the last one?
A cruel joke...
for all the stutterers out there
Erm
I've just checked on my ipod and it has everything down as 'THE Arcade Fire' (even Neon Bible). This must be how they are known on the 'gracenotes' programme therefore which must be officially endorsed.
But... I don't really care.
Internet Archaeologists will unearth this thread in 500 years time and go 'WHAT THE FUCK???'
Ithink you'll find that this thread
will be unearthed by THE Internet Archaeologists.
8/10
That, sir
Is a SUPERB name for a band
And I have called it.
'The Internet Archaeologists' coming soon to a venue near you! As soon as I can find some band members...
No.
It's just that the name sounds as though it should have a "The" prefix. It sounds awkward and clunky without it. As does (do?) Editors, Klaxons etc.
RE: the first post in this thread
hahahhahahahahaaa
tard
On my Ipod
I have Funeral by The Arcade Fire
and Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
I wanted to get them in line for some time now but i too don't know whats right.
I am making a decision now and getting rid of THE
There just done it, feels good
Whoa
I see you in a "management" position.
When i say
'Panic! at the Disco' I still say it with the explanation mark... I know I'm an indie snob.
It's slighting annoying...
The thing is my iPod automatically put it as "The Arcade Fire", even though it is just "Arcade Fire". I only realised after 200ish scrobbles on Last.fm though. Now I just can't be arsed to change it as I don't want two versions of the same band in my list.
