I feel I need to justify giving 4/10 for 'red' in last week's nme.
And it is quite simple, as a fan of their debut album I was genuinely astounded by it. I loved it! But on hearing the new album I was dissapointed. I felt like - too put a better phrase - like fyfe had too many fingers in different pies.
like Fyfe didn't know which direction to take the album. Like he had multiple ideas!
Hope you can understand where I came from now. If not feel free to moan at me @ crossanjamie@hotmail.com
the NME has far more important things to justify
than a bloody guillemots review. You'd probably be better off trying to justify your review to those who post on the guillemots board which can be found here;
http://bb02.sov.uk.vvhp.net/guillemots/YaBB.pl
:D
Guillemots NME
and you are right! but as it spend most of my life on this I feel as though I could express my feelings at the time of writing freely on this?
Is this not what drowned in sound is all about?
i suppose
have you read the review on here of the guillemots record? the comments beneath are generally quite negative towards it which leads me to believe that many people on here have a dislike of the guillemots (or at least the new album) so i don't think people care too much.
I could well be proved wrong in the morning though when everyone sees this thread...
It's your opinion anyway! You don't need to justify any of your reviews to anyone on here as far as i'm concerned.
yeah...
I don't normally do feel like I need to justify my reviews. In fact this has been the only time I have! But the whole point of this thread was basically to continue my dissapointment, as like, some on this board I really like the debut
hmm
why do think you need to justify your opinions to anyone? what's wrong with having an opinion?
or did the nme use their 'editorial style' to edit the text (like they did with my one and only review I wrote) so in reality you actually loved it, and this is a bizarre attempt at explaining your true opinions, but you're in fear of the Big Brother element of liking a band who were'nt one of the 10 who turned up for their shitty birthday party.
you're weird!
ahh
I probably used the wrong turn of phrase when i said Justify. My initial aim was to ask other people on here what they thought of it? But in my drunken mess I kinda lost myself in my own translation.
my question is
why was the review so short and given such little attention in the mag's section?
because if they put
more than 10 words in an article they break their inhouse rules
because when Guillemots first came to the NME's attention
- I think I'm remembering this correctly - they made an editorial decision that the NME do not like Guillemots, and they are not an 'NME band'.
So even if the person who reviewed the new record thought it was brilliant, it'd probably still only get a small box.
It's a shame it's not that great, I quite like the other one.
"Like he had multiple ideas!"
Artist in "eclecticism" shock! Don't worry, there'll be a one-trick Oasis album out soon with accompanying Gallagher interviews for your magazine to salivate over...
..
i'm getting really irked by some of the comments made about this record, on dis or otherwise. the majority of people on this site probably haven't even heard it. reading a poxy review in the nme and disliking the two songs that have been released so far - how can you make a comparison to an entity that you know?
it is different from 'through the windowpane', of course, as it is more of a band effort than the debut, however, what remains is an ambitious approach to experienting with 'pop' music and with melody. they are songs that are still carefully arranged, and that i am sure the band will reinvent time and time again when playing them live.
its a
crazy pop album, the NME was never gonna like it...
jesus
the point of writing a review is to be able to explain the merits of a certain 'thing' (in this case, an album). If you're unable to do that in the 150 words you were given then try harder to write a better fucking review where it becomes clear why you made your decision.
and if you write for the nme don't fuck about by trying to pander to DiS crowd, it makes you look like an idiot. why didn't you write into the magazine's letters page to make your own argument?
..
my.
ouch
Is this thread for real?
Hilarious if it is.
I know
I'm surprised at all the genuine replies.
I think it's real
His email address would seem to correspond with the guy who wrote the review in question, in any case.
..
and so the world turns.
Get Get Get Get
Get Over it.
Ok Go?
Nope,
Guillemots forthcoming single. You're in the wrong thread mate.
This is a new one
Right, so... NME writers have now decided: "actually, you know where doesn't particularly like us- the DiS forums, so let's go on there and justify ourselves to a bunch of people we'd most likely dismiss in print as a bunch of pretentious nerds."
All the while still spewing idiocy along the lines of: "like he had multiple ideas!" Are you even REAL? Honestly, I mean... the NME's a successful commercial operation, right? Is it really this infested with idiocy? You need someone to come in there and punch all its writers round the face with a brain and a good music taste, thats what you need.
you're exactly right
that's what's happening.
hordes of NME writers are all frantically registering here as we speak. i hear they're ordering extra keyboards to cope with demand.
or: one of them did.
James McMahon also
Ahhhhhh see my paranoid ramblings win ONCE AGAIN.
I would have expected the exact opposite
DiS shoulda given Guillemots a 4/10. No explanations necessary my NME friend.
Do I
need to justify my review? bx
..
please don't. really. this thread is tiresome enough as it is.
don't worry..
it's nae happening!

ha!
i quite like the fact it's a bit love/hate.
*hug*
.
mate, we get it...you wrote a review for NME, well done.
me?
i never have...

The new guillemots single is terible. And what makes it wore is that they obviously have talent. I havent listened to the whole album so cant really comment on the 4/10 rating but wouldn't be suprised if i agree with you. Just wish there was more substancve in the review as quite often the rating is subjective where as the description allows people to judge if they will like it for themselves.
