never really gotten into them, due to not really liking "How Soon Is Now?", but there were three brand new CD's at the library for rent, so I'll givvum a fair chance - where do I start? I have:

Meat Is Murder
Strangeways Here We Come
The World Won't Listen

Thanks x

Erm....

You should be able to pick up 'The Queen is dead' for a fiver at absolute most in HMV etc these days, its constantly on sale. I would say its a much better bet than any of those three and something you'll want to own.

^ this

the queen is dead is the only one of their albums i REALLY love, but i think that's maybe just because i haven't given any of the others enough of a chance yet.

I love all that I've hear of the Smiths,

but The Queen is Dead is a must!

Strangeways

Then get the queen is dead
Then hatful of hollow
Then Meat Is Murder
Then The Smiths
Then Louder than bombs

you don't really need the world wont listen if you've got louder than bombs

I love them more than anything

Wouldn't

really recommend any of those as a starting point!

But, seeing as you asked, start with Meat is Murder. Then listen to Strangeways. It's chronological so makes sense that way! Half of both of them are brilliant.

Mr Scagden is right - The Queen is Dead should be where you start!

A few too many

!s

meat

world
strangeways

Dare I say it

the first thing I got was http://www.amazon.co.uk/Very-Best-Smiths/dp/B00005KB47
It sounds really nice and clear...then got all the other albums

I used to like them quite a lot in my INDIE days.

Now I don't like them at all.

I'd say start at the beginning

then you'll understand how great The Queen Is Dead is when you get to it.

Both in songsmithery and production

But....

....sometimes its cool to work your way back. I did with Queen Is Dead - my very first Smiths album way back in the day (awww. You could get a bag o' chips and a fight for a fiver in them days, y'know).

i dont usualy say this

but the best of was great. The Queen is dead is probably the best album.

strangeways is my favourite

paint a vulgar picture... possibly my favourite Smiths song, definitely top 5.

the very best of

is terrible. it has a shocking tracklisting missing out many of their greatest moments like death of a disco dancer. i'd say start with the world won't listen, then hatful, then pretty much anything.

Also...

... the re-mastering is appalling. Both Morrissey & Marr have disassociated themselves from it. If you really need a 'best of' collection, get Best I & Best II.

Louder Than Bombs

is a decent 'best of'. £3.98 at Amazon....

meat is murder

hatful of hollow
the queen is dead
louder than bombs
strangeways here we come
the smiths

ive always found strangeways really really weak

meat is murder is fantastically underrated, i would say equal to queen is dead, so start with that of what youve got.

It may be a compilation but

'The World Won't Listen' is brilliant. 'Asleep' and 'Unloveable' are amazing (and they were b-sides for fucks sake...)

Try Hatful of Hollow

their best release I reckon.

"Strangeways" is best of those

my favorite is still the first one "The Smiths"

praise you

I've never seen anybody else put that as their favourite Smiths record. I feel less alone in the world right now.

how anyone

can like strangeways is beyond me. it's a terrible record. for me it's all about hatful of hollow, meat is murder, and obviously the queen is dead. i don't really like any of the others. meat is murder is criminally underrated.
