The Smiths have never had a classic album. So many wonderful singles, but noting they've ever released has stuck together as well since

oh but Morrissey on his own

put out that really great album, i don't know the name of it, but the one with the Ouji Board song, and the Hairdresser on Fire song..
i know you're talking Smiths. sorry :)

Bona Drag.

But

it's on Bona Drag cause Bona Drag is a collection of all his singles. Uhhh... Betcha five bucks. I'd swear it

You are right.

Great collection of songs though, easily my favourite (favorite).

"No...

it's on Viva Hate!!"

He got

a mouth full of cookies.

???

Are you for real? Have you actually tried listening to ALL the Smiths albums?

So ignoring any classis albums they have made...

... they havent made a classic album

good observation

Yeah, this seems to be

the case. At The Drive-in had no amazing albums, except all their albums too.

i reckon...

'strangeways...' could be considered a classic. although 'last night i dreamt somebody loved me' is a bit much. i'm sure all their albums are considered classics by some.

It's not a studio album

But Hatful of Hollow, to me, is much better than QID. Strangeways is great too. Debut and Meat is Murder are flawed and dated but definitely worth having.

This is a good examination of The Smiths.

Hatful of Hollow is amazing, simply the greatest non-studio collection of singles ever (maybe excepted the Blue and Red Beatles albums... but The Beatles are like infinity, you can't divide by them, they only appear in equations when pedants get involved).

In any case, Strangeways is amazing, QID is phenomenal, and the other two are slightly old feeling (mostly the production) but still have the few singles.

Beatles as infinity is ingenius

Hatful of Hollow makes me happy to be sad, if you ever meet a girl and then realise that you will never feel the way you did before you had to face reality, Still Ill is the song for you.

So ignoring the fact that they have made a classic album

they've never made a classic album???

Ignoring my cup of tea and slice of toast, I haven't had breakfast this morning :s

You should do something about that.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. :D

i disagree

i deem all my meals just as important, regardless of name or time of day. I just wish days were longer so i could squeeze more snacks and meals in.

*loosens belt*

nah

Meat is total classic.

Agreed

What's with all these philistines?

This thread needs loads of votes

for its sheer ridiculousness.

*Meat is murder*

and the first album.

This thread can be deleted now!

its a valid thread

And The Smiths are unique to me in that I'd rather listen to Hatful of Hollow and The World Won't Listen than any of their studio albums. They're unique in that the best stuff they recorded was at the BBC rather than in their own studio. They're a perfect band who failed to make a perfect album (Queen is Dead is not perfect).

umm...

hatful of hollow
meat is murder
maybe strangeways
. .
. end thread

Ignoring the obvious paradox of what you said that others have pointed out...

The debut - not great, bad production mars it. 6/10

Hatful of Hollow - Probably the best "album" (although it isn't an album) - 9/10

Meat is Murder - Some excellent songs but not a great cohesive album. 7/10

The Queen is Dead - Plenty of upsides but Never Had No-One Ever and Vicar in a Tutu are filler. Ends with Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others which, although nowhere near as bad as some make out, isn't a great song. 8/10

Strangeways Here We Come - probably my favourite Smiths album but it falls away towards the end. 9/10

Louder Than Bombs - first Smiths' CD I ever owned. Not a proper album but I have a real affection for it. 8/10

Louder Than Bombs

was my 2nd after Queen is Dead. I too have a serious affection for it.

lunacy

"The Smiths have never had a classic album."

Debut

I'm here to stick up for it. Reel Around The Fountain? Still Ill? You've Got Everything Now? Charming Man? You guys: "Oh, but the production is dated! How can I appreciate something which wasn't recorded the day before yesterday?". #rolls eyes#.

agree with you there

i love the way it bloody sounds, it's glorious...if and when they remaster it we'll all be sitting here again chastising what they've done...see also : psychocandy

The production on it is shite though.

I'm pretty sure it's nowt to do with it being dated and this was a common consensus at the time (hence the rush-release of "Hatful of Hollow", which my understanding is even the band themselves thought made the songs sound much better)

Dated production is one thing but making the songs sound far worse than they are is another thing entirely...

That's a good point

About Hatful of Hollow. I'd forgotten that the band themselves were unhappy with the debut's production. Stuff I've read always mentions that Morrissey couldn't understand why they weren't bigger for most of the early part of their career, and he always blamed the marketing and production.

Nevertheless, the debut's production has really grown on me over the years. There's something er.. stately about it.

They're

all virtually perfect!

The production on the 1st is dire, very hollow and lifeless. I'd have done a better job.

Meat Is Murder & TQID are acknowledged as the best, but for me it's got to be Strangeways.

It sounds like an epic journey to implosion, it's wonderful!

But, as you guessed by my username, I find it hard to be objective about them.

If you don't like The Smiths

then I don't like you.
Simple. Fucking. As.

I think

that Strangeways is a classic album, and I don't think that the Queen is Dead is particularly. And Meat Is Murder is seen by many as an iconic and classic album, so I think that two classic studio albums out of four is pretty good going. The Beatles only had 4 classic albums.

This is a totally valid point

I *love* The Smiths to a berserk extent but they haven't released a bona fide classic album. The closest is 'Hatful' but that's a comp. The debut sounds like a wasp trapped in a margerine tub. 'Meat' is a stinker, it's got too much filler on it. 'Queen' is good but it highlights their biggest failing - if they had one problem it was not that they were depressing but *not depressing enough*. All of that Frankie Howerd, Round the Horne bullshit like Vicar in a Tutu, Frankly Mr Shankly and the viciously shit Girlfriend In A Coma can go and play in the fucking traffic as far as I'm concerned. Strangeways is good but still too full of comedy filler.

The best Smiths album? The Best Of The Smiths vol 1 and 2.
