they ask you what kind of music you like?
Like most people here, I own hundreds of albums and listen to new bands all the time. I like a lot of stuff. Some of it is quite diverse. But you can't just say "Oh, I like all sorts of stuff", because the people who usually say that are invariably the kind of people who buy two albums a year from Tescos (one of which is Mika).
So without giving a lecture in your extensive preferences, what the hell can you say?
(My usual response at the moment is "I like things that can soundtrack emotionally tense moments in sports-based US teen dramas").
I just sigh
and say unless you like the same stuff you wont of heard of it
I tend to stare blankly
and respond with an equally stupid answer. Usually: 'Oh loads of stuff...'
It is really quite unnerving.
Speaking of stupid questions, today on the phone I was asked by Southern Electric about how many smoke alarms I have in my house. Wtf.
stuff you've probably never really heard of
then they say "like who?"
so you reel off some names and their response is "oh, weird bands then" or something similar cos they've never heard of them.
these people are mainly "people at work", and they think Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys are the pinnacle of alternative!
On telling someone once that I was off to Reading, they asked me if Toploader were playing... My response of "I fucking well hope not" seemed to surprise them...
'rock music'
Do You Like Rock Music?
"alternative"
and then reel out some genres...
i find this really hard
i used to say indie untill i realised everyone thought i was a huge kooks fan.
now i try and explain further.
i say a few band names untill they look confused, wink, and then walk away looking mysterious.
I usually say
'better music than you' coz its true
The other day I told someone...
...that I liked a lot of German stuff from the '70s. They thought I was taking the piss.
I went for lunch with this hot Serbian girl
and I asked her 'what kind of music do you like?'
and she said 'all kinds of music'
I said 'like what?'
she said 'Linkin Park and Evanescence'
I almost ran out on her. True story.
But you stayed
Because she was hot and Serbian. Good work!
I usually panic and say blur or oasis.
Thats how much this question annoys me.
"a load of shite"
i tend to get stumped when someone asks me
and say "oh, i dunno...like...eh, indie-rock and twee-pop and hardcore punk. mostly. what do you like?"
i ask them back because then, if they know what i'm on about, then i can be more specific. which, in all honesty, is generic white boy indie-rock, played loud with bad vocals.
"avant-garde jazzcore techno with elements of twee metal and reggae influences"
then i tell them they have to name at least five bands in the genre or i can't be friends with them.
ska punk
I was asked this at an interview.
It was the only question i found hard to answer.
job interview?
or are you in oasis?
interview for a uni course
bashment
white supremacist punk
that makes bleeding well sure they don't ask again.
I say "Errr...
...rock, punk, metal..." Which is enough to make most people go "...oh" in my experience. Maybe I'm meeting the wrong people.
If they ask about bands then I say Smashing Pumpkins, Ash, New Order, The Pixies... Something there for everyone!
"Xiu motherfuckin' Xiu"
I don't. But I say that anyway.
I just say
"stuff you just don't know, mate" and look them right in the eyes
my dream is to own that t-shirt
and wear it every day, gaining smells and smiles.
I would probably
Pound on them a little. And then GIVE AN EXAMPLE..... Works like a charm.
I
spin them round, slam them against a wall pinning their arm behind their back and say "Now who's asking the questions, huh?"
I'm a plagiarist.
Yuck.
I seem to remember getting this about a zillion times in freshers' week. Initially saying 'loads of stuff' led people to think - as mentioned - I was really bland and didn't like music at all or, rather, that I was remarkably eclectic and very well versed in world music or something, which wasn't really true either and made me look silly and ignorant when I had to point out that this unfortunately wasn't the case.
Since then I just say something like, 'you know, totally AWESOME stuff!!' which still makes me just look like a total wanker.
depends who im talkin to
but i normally just say "punk rock". because i think that best encapsulates my DIY spirit. yeahhhhh. i can pass it off as vaguely ironic too if the person turns out to know a lot about the musics that i know about.
"Indie and electro".
Followed by confusion when it transpires that I really do not like Snow Patrol under any circumstances.
I say
that I'm an albums man. that I like focused music with a clear purpose and understanding of itself. music that was constructed with a great deal of inspiration and effort. that's all I can say without listing my favorite albums, of which there are hundreds.
In contrast
I'll usually just go with "I dunno, bit of everything really", which is true if you ignore my ingrained hatred of U2 and Westlife.
absolutely
hate this question
i just sigh and say 'err.. a whole mix of stuff really' but that normally makes you sound like a complete idiot
"Bruce Springsteen"
Or whoever I was listening to last. Usually does the trick.
...
Recite my LastFM link cloud.
i just say
"i hate music"
and walk away.
I don't talk to people.
"anything that sounds like it was recorded after taking a shitload of drugs"
on ACID
My biggest hate
is people who say "oh I like everything" when they actually mean "everything that's played on Radio 1", so I feel your pain at not wanting to use that as a response.
I usually say something vague like "indie and rock stuff", unless I know they're into music too and then I'll be give a few band names.
'oh you know...the usual stuff'
worst comes to worst, they see my ipod, go 'oh so weird shit then...'
my response 'aye, weird shit...i'll be going now'
'oh you know...the usual stuff'
worst comes to worst, they see my ipod, go 'oh so weird shit then...'
my response 'aye, weird shit...i'll be going now'
Perhaps before they see your iPod
It's best to be frank, and just say "I like weird shit you won't have heard of"
does nobody else
feel really pretentious saying this? ^
especially since most of what i listen to isn't very obscure or weird at all to anyone who's even a little bit into music.
"Rock n roll
Blues, Soul etc."
Eazy.
