I've got Good News for People Who Love Bad News and We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank but someone I met last night assured me that their new stuff pales in comparison to their older material. If this is so, I need to investigate asap! Anyone got any insights into this? I've done a bit of quick internet research and i'm drawn to The Lonesome Crowded West.
The Moon & Antarctica
Is their best album and one of my favourite of all time, everyone must hear it!!
tlcw
is in my opinion their best work.
such an excellent album
consitent in disguise
all good from this band, old stuff and new (check out Ugly Casanova for Isac Brock's similar but more folly like side project)
Basically a band that name checks Bukowski gets my vote
^
It's a little inconsistent but it also contains by far their best stuff.
get em
all at some point but yes their earlier stuff is in my opinion better. my list goes like this favorites to least favorites:
the lonesome crowded west
building nothing out of something...(i can't remember the exact album title, it's b sides and eps collection)
moon and antarctica
good news
we were dead
get some of their live shows somehow, there are some good recordings out there and they really rock live
"new stuff pales compared to old stuff"
ah, just about every band, eh.
Put me down for Lonesome Crowded West to start. I'm not a huge MM fan, but this is feckin great.
old stuff blah blah blah
lonescome croweded west is as good as the last two albums. i bought the moon & antarctica a while ago but i've only listened to it once, didn't really draw me in.
Moon & Antarctica
Is perhaps the hardest album of theirs to get into as its a concept album, but when you do get into it, its by far the most rewarding.
whoever said it was right
Lonesome Crowded West and Moon & Antarctica are far superior than the last 2 records
all their albums
have lots of shit on it to make them really long and hard to listen to. But some of the tracks are genuinely amazing.
you can't go wrong with lonesome crowded west
it's really one of the most essential indie records of the 90s. it's sprawling and at times messy, but the standout tracks are mindblowing.
their earlier stuff is a lot less polished than their later records. for the first couple of records they were only a three piece, a stellar one at that (just check out jeremiah green's drumming). the quirky charm of their early output is drowned in the thick, syrupy sound of more recent records. be sure to check out long drive for someone with nothing to think about if you like lonesome crowded west. also, building nothing out of something is also heartily recommended; an eclectic mix of singles and b-sides. awesome stuff.
and YES, earlier records superior to ANYTHING post moon & antarctica.
Well,
my fave is moon and antarctica,
and i do like their earlier stuff. But some of it tips the verge of what i like and dont like. Tbh, suck em and see.
there is a compilation one, called build something out of nothing. I think, its mostly ep tracks, b-sides and a few album tracks. all pre good news.
so if you can get it cheap, thats quite a cool disc.
but, if you like good news and we were dead, you might be unpleasantly surprised by their earlier sound?
Dunno. floop
sad sappy sucker
is the first thing they recorded but it came out later, and its AMAZING and you should get it first.
i'm pretty much the opposite...
i quite like moon and antarctica, didn't really get into lonesome crowded west but good news and we were dead are my favourite ones, i think have the best songs...
the new albums are fantastic.
but you really need The Moon and Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowded West. Both really brilliant!
What about
This is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About?
COME ON!!
moon and antartica is the best one
i've heard
