Given that I'm a fan of stuff like EITS, Godspeed and My Vitriol (ok MV aren't purely instrumental but do have some instrumental songs) who else would you recommend I check out. Think epic!

I purchased This Will Destroy you's young mountain album and have to say its good but not as good as any of the above.

I've already heard Don Caballero and they're ok.

Cheers

instruments or vessels

do it! now!

^^

a second vote for instruments

Giraffe? Giraffe!

2nd album especially.

these

and Cats x3, This Town Needs Guns & DMST.

2nd album!?!?!

God Is An Astronaut

2nd album's probably their best: All Is Violent, All Is Bright

^ this definitely

I'd find it hard to pick a favourite though, can't wait to see them at the Brudenell in April!

Also worth considering;

Yndi Halda
Russian Circles
Pelican
Red Sparowes

65daysofstatic

Surely too obvious.

^beat me to it

.

^^

me too

Try...

Pelican. A bit more droney and metal than EITS and Godspeed, but definitely worth listening to.

the last....

...Red Sparowes LP was better than the last Mogwai one...

discuss?

^Is it wrong to asume this is true..

..when I haven't even heard of Red Sparowes.

^ i side

with Red Sparowes

Tell me more.

Actually tell me more about all these other instrumental bands please.

Also I'm surprised you didn't recommend Hella in your list below. Aren't they instrumental, or at least Hold Your Horse Is is, isn't it? (last 4 words look a little strange).

this is just my opinion

at the end of the day.you will have to listen and make up your own mind.red sparrowes are good yes but you know how much i love rock action so im always going to more biased towards that.

this is true

your Rock Action is my Deloused In The Comatorium

Yndi Halda

Jakob
Rachel's
Red Sparowes
Laura
By The End of Tonight
Esmerine
Eluvium

Rachel's and Esmerine

Definitely definitely definitely.

Also see: Cue.

By The End of Tonight

seconded !

Port-Royal
Hreda
MON ( amazing french band http://www.myspace.com/montheband )

^^

good call on By The End of Tonight, I was about to suggest them.

Haven't looked further down the list yet, but.

Oxes
Paul Newman
1 speed bike
All Systems Ghost
Cathode Ray Syndrome

^^^ Yeah!

thank you for the mention.

Esmerine times a million

"If Only a Sweet Surrender..." is an utterly amazing record.

TORTOISE

^ yes

^^Of course Tortoise

and the album you want is called
Millions Now Living Will Never Die

job done, let's close the thread

I've only got Standards

it's ace, but hard too. I have to be in the MOOOOOD.

How has no one said Battles?

I know they're not strictly instrumental anymore as there are vocals, but they're not really vocals in the conventional senses, more just another instrument. And they're not present on every track. And yeah the best suggestion is definitely 65daysofstatic! Oh and Yndi Halda are absolutely amazing as well if you like Godspeed.

I prefer

Don Cab really.

Panfa Bear

could come under the banner which you have pushed Battles into, too :-)

Starfraenn Hakon

Don't know much about them but it's beautiful stuff. Also try Detwiije, I think they've been a bit dormant lately but they are bloody good.

I may be wrong but

I think Detwiije have called it a day

Stafraenn Hakon

is fucking ace!

www.shakon.com & www.myspace.com/shakon

Detwiije were fucking ace, but sadly ignored by the masses despite being a hell of a lot better than most bands. They are no more... :-(

Bugger :(

I'd love to have seen them again. I saw them with Lights On The Highway, who are also definitely worth having a listen to.

toe

toe toe toe toe toe toe

god you need god is an astronaut in your life.

Lightning Bolt

Red Sparowes
Port-Royal

Yndi Halda

Eluvium
Nadja
Tesa
Loss Of A Child
Tristeza
Lights Out Asia
Tarantel

El Ten Eleven
We're From Japan!
Wood and Wires
We Followed Tigers
The Ascent of Everest
Long Distance Calling
Set Fire to Flames
The Album Leaf
If These Trees Could Talk
North
Gregor Samsa
Shalabi Effect

Varying and contrasting styles but that should keep you busy.

Gregor Samsa is superb

Which Set Fire To Flames CD do you have that's good though? I have some 2CD effort called Telegraphs in Negative / Mouths Trapped in Static and it's really just never grown.

And whoever started this thread, you first purchase should be Mono - You Are There (how can i have forgotten Mono>?!??!)

I have that Set Fire To Flames CD

I thought it was a bit shit. I've heard a track of theirs on a Fat Cat compilation and it was lovely, but that album didn't do anything for me.

yeah

i think that was a bad purchase...but now i am deterred from trying again.

NB to thread-creator: A Silver Mt. Zion (first 2 albums are 80% instrumental)

Steal Compass

The one from the Fat Cat compilation's from their first album and I thought - "this is nice - however, I'll go for their second one since 2CDs = better value".

So this makes us both idiots, yes?

The First album 'Reigns Rebuilder' is BEAUTIFUL

The second overlong, over-indulgent effort 'Telegraphs in static' is pure shite.

Gregor Samsa

aren't really instrumental but they are great...

Cheval de Frise

Good call. And I thought they were a well kept secret.

A seeing as how theetersescrimp has just pointed out they're both playing tomorrow, Zu and Guapo as well.

i saw them live for the first time a few weeks back

quite disappointing but i'm not sure it was their fault - the sound was terrible and they looked genuinely unhappy.
still, and the battle is won is one of my favourite instrumental albums - good for working too

IO

IO www.myspace.com/weareio
yeah
on the same label as god is an astronauts new 7"

hot shit

:P

yndi halda

bell orchestre

...

Grails
Mono
Eluvium
Do Make Say Think
Pelican
Belong
Yndi Halda
Detwiije
Red Sparowes
Rachel's
Tarentel
Yume Bitsu
Surface Of Eceon
Tortoise

Lots of different styles there, from the more metal end of the spectrum through to modern classical, ambient treated guitar noise, kraut rock/noise and a bit of classic instrumental post rock.

Futureheads

lolz

Zongamin

I can't believe no one has said Zongamin. His 2003 album is awesome.

^ what's

this like? it's cheap online and i may want to beat people to it

Electronica.

Was "so hot right now" in 2003.
Almost got lumped in with the back-end of electroclash, though it's not at all.
Almost got lumped in with !!! and stuff for using guitars, but it's not really the same.
Almost a good album, but too patchy really. A few great tracks though!

yeah

a couple of journalist reviews i read there said it was a bit of a mash-mash of ideas that never really seem cohesive or coherent

papa m - live from a shark cage

If you like tortoise that is

i like

tracer amc, and because of ghost

if you like that, why not make the leap

into some electronic based post rock epicness?
you could do worse than try out trentemøller's 'the last resort'. check out a song called 'take me into your skin'. has a very GYBE guitar bit in it.
also apparat and m83 both make gorgeous, epic stuff that destroys a lot of 'band'-based (what a horrible phrase, but you get the jist) post rock.
then there's also ben frost who makes utterly amazing soundscapes with huge mountains of distortion.
oh, and ludovico einaudi. just started listening to him and he's jaw droppingly good. one man and a piano. and a string section. and robert lippock tripping balls on a laptop.
YES.

electronic based post rock epicness

needs a mention of World's End Girlfriend. In particular The Lie Lay Land.
Brilliant.

soo var iss

.

5ive.

^

word.

I particularly like...

Dysrhythmia
5ive
Zombi

Lite

from Japan - very good

Earth as well.

AGREEEEEEEEED

on Grails.

Apologies if someon'es already said it

Let Airplanes Circle overhead

Brilliant no-nonsense post (punk) rock. No samples, no vocals, no over-long freak outs; just pure driven punky fury. Great stuff.

hammock

jaysus their album is amazin

Indeed !

there was only...

one mention of Tristeza in this whole thread, and it was lost in a long list.

Surely there has to be more love for a band, that clearly has inspired godspeed, eits amongst others. Very few post-rock bands have produced a better album than spine and sensory and a colores.

You'd be a fool not to check this out.

yes, ace band!

i once saw them live too i'm sure, maybe at the Spitz? maybe not...

Laeto

ace band from Dundee

I want

a new Laeto album !

JAGA JAZZIST

JAGA JAZZIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ this

i only have A Livingroom Hush, but apparently there is a better one. Pray tell

well

the stix and what we must are their other two. i can't decide which i like more, but what an awesome band!

/\that/\ and El Ten Eleven

are seriously ace on the lighter side of things.

.

labradford
pullman
health (mostly)

^ Labradford i have

fixed :: content

i think it's pretty dull

This thread = very helpful to me.

Bless you everyone. So many bands though, knowing which ones to pursue is almost impossible.

try some

codes in the clouds, some sigur ros has very little vocals. Fuck buttons? although theyre a bit electronicy maybe

You Slut!

not epic, but brilliant, and massively loud.

Some v dull music here.

Try The Jesus Years.

i'm always banging on about them but...

... And So I Watch You From Afar are where its at for me at the moment. They're playing the DiS showcase at Water Rats this Fri and i for one will be there cock in hand.

Their latest EP rakes in early EITS and the 'gwai buts tries to take it in a little bit more of a lightfingered direction.
