Every successful genre has eventually been overrun by major labels signing up anyone vaguely the same and throwing promo money at them.

Why else would a record label sign a band?

They're a business - of course that's what they do.

Nothing bemuses me more than these threads complaining that the big record companies are in it for the money. What the hell did anyone expect?

^This.

End of thread.

Just one more thing:

Cajun Dance Party are great.

no

nnnnnonononono

although i have to say, their guitarist is very talented and a thoroughly nice bloke too - it's a shame the singer is the complete antithesis.

Not.

See below.

the funny part

is that most of the time, 99% of this bands get dropped after one or two albums because they made the label lose a lot of money...

It's the same thing as the economy behind films though.

And that record companies are fine if they can minimise their losses on 9 of the 10 things they release 'cos the 1 in 10 that's a big ht will usually bring in far more than the others lose.

Yes, that was before...

now it isn't working that well apparently...
But maybe it's because what they're signing ( since the first sub-Libertines band was signed ) is really the worst of the worst...

Fling enough shit at the wall..

...some of it's bound to stick.

Sorry,

^that was supposed to be in "How shall I redecorate my flat?" thread.

^ This

made me laugh. A lot.

hoist ANYTHING up a flagpole...

some fuckers bound to salute it.

Right,

I understand this, and it's certainly true for the BIG 5 or whatever it is nowadays.
Howevvverrrrr...
I think we can, and should, expect more from labels, from a musician's and a punter's perspective.
Many labels are run by people who REALLY care about the content of their roster and have a specific vision for a style of music or an attitude they want to foster. Hydrahead are probably in the position where they make a bit o' cash, but they've got there by taking the long hard slog and only signing bands which fit their specific vision of how music should sound. I could name countless other examples; I'm sure we all could.

I think it was mid 90s also rans Menswear who were

allegedly signed before they'd formed the band.

I doubt this is the whole story, but, according to legend some A&R scout saw them tarting about in their slimfit mod suits around Camden at the height of the whole 'It's an NW1derful life' thing and insisted they signed with him.

The band only really existed as a concept at the time or something....anyway, *just think*...we could have missed out on all this!!!!!11:

I think it was there were loads of A&R at their first gig

Or something. I'll Manage Somehow is a good song. And so was Being Brave.

you're obviously not familiar with the music industry.

it is an industry. it does things to make money.

more like

it does things to lose money at the moment...
Oh yeah, but it's all because of the nasty downloaders...

Thanks for re-iterating my point.

Just in case anyone missed it the first time.

i think people tend to skip your posts

so i thought i'd put it in words they'd want to read and be bothered to read.

Ouch...

Nonsense.

It's like being stung by a butterfly...

awww

xx

You are aware

The Pidgeon Detectives are signed to Dance To The Radio...Whiskas from iForward, Russia!'s label? Thus debunking your point because it's a guy putting his mates on his label because he likes their music.

I do know what you mean though.

DTTR gets its money from Co-Operative Music though

also, i smell something funny with them these days. why is the new Russia album coming out on Cooking Vinyl?!?

Whiskas is nothing to do with DTTR anymore!

because of all this stuff with Co-op music

he's DIY fo life (or something)

WARNER BROTHERS

if it sells

sign it, you can't blame them really!

All that happens in these forums is

someone makes an obvious opening statement (see the one at the top of the page) then it gets answered in the first couple of posts:

"Why else would a record label sign a band?

They're a business - of course that's what they do."

Then the rest of the thread is people who havn't read the above posts and reply with variations of the first couple of posts.

Not complaining or anything, just saying! :D

The worst thing nowadays is

That there are so many guitar bands making music in the mainstream, but the quality is so poor for the most part. A decade ago there were fewer bands but higher quality albums - Word gets Around, Yesterday Went too soon etc

I'm trying to hard to resist making a sarcastic comment there

It's so, so difficult. I'll settle with the simple: that's not even Feeder's best album. That's all I have to say. I'm off outside to giggle.

What is Feeder's best album then pray tell?

It's my favourite of all of theirs. I'm suprised at how disliked Feeder are on DIS.

Really? Even though they're one of the blandest bands that ever did live?

I like the one about drinking cider from a lemon.

Fair enough if you don't like them.

They are a really good live band though and I think the people who don't like them recorded may like them live. A good straight forward & unpretentious rock band

I mainly

listen to music FOR the pretension.

what bands around now

do you think are likely to be remembered in 20 years time?

ooh

The Hoosiers
Babyshambles
The Enemy
Kasabian
Newton Faulkner
The Cribs
The Fratellis
The Horrors
The Holloways
Jack Penate
Just Jack
Simple Kid
Chris T-T
Lily Allen
The Noisettes
The Go Team
The Rakes
The Ting Tings
The Twang
The View

will ALL have long careers ahead of them and will ALL be making popular and quality music in 20 years from now.

Oh hold on, that's my list of 'come the revolution etc', sorry...

Simple Kid

is a leftfield choice for a musical vendetta.

hilarious

any chance of a serious answer

U2

They'll all be

included on one of those 'this is 1980' programmes on channel 4, and made to look like they were a lot more exciting than they actually are/were

The following bands don't deserve to be on that list:

The Horrors
The Noisettes
The Go! Team

the rest can all be killed in said revolution.

Thing is you can never tell.

I dare say at a point during the 70s people woul dhave a band like 10CC to be remembered in the way the Beatles are whereas, on the otherside of the coin few people noticed the Velvet Underground, the Fall Love or Nick Drake were around at the start of their careers, let alone expected their music to last.

It's a silly question anyway

with the "remembered" wording. People remember Blancmange and Colonel Abrams.

and

they both had some fucking classics too!

adele, anybody?

i mean, does anyone think she actually has talent?

like, srsly?

No question she's got a pair of lungs on her.

The songs are very bland though.

good point well made

i guess what kind of annoys me about her is thatshe's touted as a 'singer-songwriter'... which surely requires the latter to validate the former.

she writes a song and the sings it

surely that is the only criteria

Yeah.

I mean obviously she technically is a singer-songwriter as she writes her own songs (I presume no professional songwriter had input on "Chasing Pavements" 'cos if they did they didn't do a great job) but it's questionable whether she wouldn't be better off in the long-run admitting songwriting wasn't her strengh and letting someone else do it for her.

of course she has talent

she went to the brits school!!! so she must have...

ha, for a change maybe i should sign some bands that actually sell...

I wish

Adele would start chasing motorways...

kudos

to people up above who think that feeder are good.

they are bland and uber naff now. but they were good. and were when i saw them an awesome live band.

i think that its a toss up between polythene and comfort in sound for best album.

yesterday went too soon is awesome, but too long for my liking. i think echo park is probably the blandest and worst one after that feeling the senses crap.

and word gets around is a good album too.

and

what about pete doherty?

will he be remembered in 20 years time?

or Winehouse?

Fingers crossed...

they won't

ha!

haha...

top 5 singles in march 1989

01. Too Many Broken Hearts - Jason Donovan
02. Help - Bananarama/La Na Nee Nee Noo Nioo
03. Stop - Sam Brown
04. Love Changes Everything - Michael Ball
05. Cant Stay Away From You - Gloria Estefan

who cares if the hoosiers aren't around in 20 years?!

Bring back Jason Donovan

my gran misses him.

"The Current Situation"...

This comment gave me lolabelly-chuffties.

As if record companies have suddenly stumbled on this winning formula of signing what's popular to sell more records!

The key point here is that what's popular isn't necessarily what's right, you dig?

Pretty Boy Singers?

The Pigeon Detectives!

Does. Not. Compute.

There was this Welsh emo band

whose videowas on MTV last night - Kids In Glass Houses or something. Horrid, truly horrid, like Scouting For Girls gone emo.

Argh...

I like 'em!

I don't know if I do or don't,

I'm not sure about anything right now... everything's become a blur after publicly confessing my liking of this band... for the love of God, somebody please help me!

Paramore

to an extent too.

Wrong...

Really good pop music.

hmmmmm

agreed. like if you don't like it, don't listen to it. don't listen to radio 1 during the day. its perfectly easy to avoid/pay no attention to stuff you don't like.

Hasn't this always been the situation to some extent?

I don't really care to be honest, they sign shit bands and I wont buy any of their albums. They wont care about this either because some idiots will.

people complaining about shit bands

are more annoying than the bands themselves

this is so true

but I guess, that in turn makes the bands pretty annoying.... vicious circle

Wow, it's almost like it's a

music... BUSINESS!!!

Incredible scenes!

HEY, GET THIS EVERYONE

MAYBE LABELS SIGN BANDS WHICH ARE POPULAR AND THAT

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THIS

Pigeons might be shitq

but they are on a local (Leeds) label and have stayed with them - I think the Pigeons deserve hats off for sticking to their guns and ignoring the lawyers who were telling them to go with a major.
