Pitchfork reckon this album is a 9point1er, which makes it one of the best albums of the last few years. Has anyone heard it yet? Their songs i've heard are fairly meh. Am i wrong?

I've only given it one listen
It is very good, but certainly not 9.1 - especially on Pitchfork's terms. Maybe after another couple of listens I might agree, though, who can say?
take some dance music history lessons...
no offense, but...i think that in general the average DIS reader is not as versed in the great music that they are referencing on this album. most reviews deal with stuff like um, weezer, and um the mountain goats, you know like traditional (awfully boring) "indie-ish"rock music. you should all just take dance music history lessons!!!
that's kind of like saying...
... you're 31 so your opinion on contemporary music is invalid; i.e. fucking ridiculous.
I think it is a 9.1
the songs are incredibly well written, and its pretty damn cool. Antonys vocals are really great to, and compliment the music well.
this
i'm only unsure if i actually like it or not but thats a personal thing.
i've had it for a couple of weeks and the depth of the record is pretty astonishing.
It is very good
I'm still surprised by that score though - thats the equivalent of most places giving it full marks!
I have had this two days
and I am growing to 'quite' like it, but it has not really impressed me to be honest. I think Antony goes a long way to redeeming this album for me, and there are some outstanding vocals ('You Belong', 'You Raise Me Up') but in essence, I think this album is not aimed at me - the problem for me is that 80's disco beat which I actually dislike.
Ghostland Observatory > Hercules and Love Affair
make me
want to investigate this.

hahahaha
hahahahahahahahahaha
Wrong
i tried listening
i really didn't like them.
i bought it on monday
which was quite trusting because i hadn't heard anything of it- just seen a lot of press etc. surrounding them.
it's ok, some of it's fun, some is just 'anthony' if that makes sense- the opener for example. but 'blind' is the hit right now and there are a few catchy ones on there (if i'm honest, the ones with the girls) but i must admit i'm a sucker for disco and anything a bit 80s/synthy
but yeah, definately a few more listens needed. probably a 7 right now...
i'm not too keen on it,
listened to the album once, didnt really grab me, then again im not a fan of anthony and the johnsons.
I've had it
for a couple of days
Strange record with some really amazing songs, but the Anthony stuff is quite meh, indeed - nice 80ish disco driven beat but it wears out quite fast
SInce
when was Pitchfork in touch with the realities of the majority of audience and critic reaction anyway. Its always either "realy, its not that bad" or "Christ on a bike, really??!!"
Let's somebody please come out and say what this is...fucking garbage!
I imagine HaLA to be the soundtrack to a Ryan Schreiber and James Murphy gay porn video.
more ridiculously
the only gave the deluxe edition of the one of the greatest albums of all time 6.3!!!
i listened to it
and antonys vocals for me are absolutely wasted on wishy washy 80's dance. hes not wastd when he does guest vocals on rufus wainwrights album. i just feel i is a terrible clash.
do you know anything about dance music?
i quite agree with the score. for too long, dumb hipsters that think classic music doesn't exist outside of the velvet underground and joy division have thrown out dance music as a musical form. well, there's actually a whole lot of history and merit to it boys!!
OH SHUT THE FUCK UP
yes
this album is fucking brilliant. spot on review from them.
Read this earlier
It's an excellent, informed and unpretentious review, but then Philip Sherburne is their dance specialist. I don't agree with the mark though, more like a 7.5. It's half a stunning album, but it tails off significantly in the second half. Blind, Hercules' Theme, You Belong and Athene are all fantastic though.
Boring shite
I'm fed up of all this bollocks.
I agree with the fork
this album snuck up on me and whilst I didnt really like it at first I have formed a special bond with it and am currently addicted to it... as is my house mate... which is rare!
Its a fantastic album and people who claim not to like it are scared of catching the gay or have their head up their own arse looking for a pretentious noise bridge/drone
I listening to it before I went to sleep last night
all the lights off, headphones in.
Had a much more profound effect on me, I can see where pitchfork are coming from.
i'm curious to investigate this
<straps on a deerstalker>
It's quite good and all
but does it not remind anyone else ALOT of LCD soundsystem?
no
IMO it doesn't sound anything like LCD Soundsystem
no
dfa
is the ONLY link between the two, and for the record this is a corking little number
I hadn't actually realised they were on DFA!
If James Murphy was singing on some of the tracks I think it could easily be an LCD record. That's my no means a bad thing mind you, I really like this.
It's excellent.
I don't really care what rating Pitchfork gave it.
And on that merit, your review is enuff for me, Tom ^^
I think I'll release myself from the dungeons of work and go get it today.
I think you'd like it. :)
I think I would too :))
I have been listening to their myspaz at work and love the disco elements... DISCO TO DISCO TO DISCO. Yay.
Come to my party! It will be full of fun and italo disco and electro and beat masters dropping beats etc...
The mere mention of LCD Soundsystem
makes me want to curlew pandie.
8/10
at the mo. had it since Monday and have played it each day on the ipod to and from work. First 6 tracks are excellent then it drops a little bit until the last track, imo. Blind is the best track. Each new listen brings out another hidden depth so it could well hit the dizzy heights of a pitchfork 9.1 one day. Well worth investing in as is their Classique #2 EP which is much more chicago/acid house based.
I was hopping
for a more Chicargo/Acid house sound I think. But I aint gonna complain with a Larry Levern style really.
I haven't read that Pitcfork reveiw
and oly herd the record once. But I enjoy it so far. Its a nice album. I really likethe old school disco funkyness of it all, it reminds me of alot of other DFA stuff especialy the drums but they where done by Tim Goldsworthy who does loadsa DFA stuff. The tune 'You Belong' is a beast it reminds me of The Vamp by Outlander for you dance peeps out there.
I have listened to it 3 times now
and im still not really into it.
No judgement yet, will persist with it. It must have something to keep me trying.
At first blush
it doesn't seem anything more than fairly routine. It doesn't help that I don't like Antony's voice and the music isn't strong or distinctive enough to overcome this aversion.
I'm very surprised that this is seriously being touted as an album of the year. Still, hype eh?
Antony's inclusion on the proceedings
killed any desire I once had to listen. His voice is anathema to me. As I may have over-stated elsewhere today...
same bloody label but
juan maclean, happy house, someone put me out misery.is it banshees cover or what.fact mag said yea,me says maybe
