It's definitive!
it's just that i was told that i like "lo-fi"
but, out of bands i know on this list, for eg. Unicorns..i wouldn't consider them lo-fi. but then i'm all confuseeddd...
The Unicorns are lo-fi
Why wouldn't you consider them lo-fi? It only refers to the recording quality of their material.
isnt a clean recording?
i dunno..maybe i've been listening to such "heavy lo-fi" (ie times new viking) lately that moderate lo-fi sounds clean?
that must be it????
Times New Viking artificially add fuzz
Not the same thing.
oh really?
but they're on the list..
that's why i asked. mmmm maybe i just like artificial fuzz!! hehe "artificial fuzz"
I'm not saying they're not lo-fi
just that they deliberately accentuate the sound in a way which wouldn't be naturally achieved, so to use it as a yardstick is misleading.
also, how do you know the artifically add it?
(i'm not doubting you, just wondering)
*shrugs*
i just read a million reviews
and could not find anyone saying that anywhere! are you in the band?????? woooo!
basically
in this day and age, records sounding that fuzzy just isnt natural
what about when you use a 4track?
when i recorded bands with my 4track they'd alwys come out fuzzy...
but i'm not pro.
depends if its digital
or analogue. or maybe you just had everythng turned up too high.
analogue
and ya, probably :)
they don't at all
they just use really cheap equipment
^this
is what i believe. what would be the point of recording their stuff well and then putting fuzz on top of it? it would be such extra work...
what would be the point
of using really cheap equipment?
it works.
so why buy new stuff?
and you get interesting sounds out of the distortion that creates. everyone uses ProTools nowadays, so everything sounds the same.
maybe because it's all you can afford?
what, all bands in the UK can afford to get professionally recorded? noone just records themselves in their basement using what cheap equipment they could afford or borrowed?
Because they're stupid
thom yorke
way lo-fi production from nigel godrich there...
if by true
you mean shit
i can see why you're named desirable
hehe
it's about 0.00001% there...you'd need the entire catalogues of hundreds of labels - you can start with mine - and every single band in entire genres....add another 100,000 bands and you'd be getting there..
wikipedia does have its limits...
oh, so when my friend was telling me
that i'm into "lo-fi indie rock" he wasn't narrowing things down like he thought he was? because this was supposed to be some sort of revelation for me, but it's only caused confusion on my part...
phantom planrt?
blur?
zero 7?
wtf?
exactly my thoughts.
don't look at me!
i didn't write that list!
I FOUND IT..SWEAR!!
tom vek
is in it twice
^ that reminds me
his next album should hopefully be out this year!
can someone please answer
my 4track question above??
I think
The Beatles recorded Sgt Pepper on a pair of 4 tracks, so the answer is no. Like Jamie says, it depends how you use it. Even using cassettes you can get decent results, though obviously not to the of even a semi pro studio.
it's not true
because some of these are people, not bands. ha.
AND I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND
what element it is that links all these above bands together..
some i hate and some i love.
and i just don't get it..like how are the Shins on that list?
sorry, i think i'm music-dense..
but i do really want to understand this..
There's nothing that links them
Some use deliberately lo-fi recording techniques, some just have a sloppy, laid back ambience. Some people seem to think Coxen's wiry fuzzed up guitar tone qualifies as lo-fi.
Basically people are mixing up lo-fi recording and lo-fi as a genre.
musky's right...
in conclusion...this list is neither true nor helpful, as it makes no sense - maybe your friend wrote it...?
these are probably more use to you:
