A long long time ago I asked on here for anyone with an unsigned band to post up a link to their myspace or whatever so that my Year 9 class could review their music.

Unfortunately my school then promptly banned access to such sites.

However I have triumphantly bypassed such constraints and now here are some inital thoughts from Year 9 about the music you kindly volunteered. We didn't get to listen to it all, but I am posting in the order that it arrived - more next week.

First up - (we are) pictures

http://www.myspace.com/wearepictures

Pictures: Sounds Like The Fall of Troy (if you know of them) they have that experimental ‘difference’ to their music and I always like that in a band.

I like songs with words in them

To upbeat and rocky for my liking, maybe just tone it down a bit. Very original tune maybe a bit of variety would do the trick. Its all over the place!

And now *cough* 'Talker'...

Talker: A light poppy sound, quite a happy feel, and that’s always good, a great sound they have made but the tune gets a little repetitive until further on in the song, cool song though

Quite good although I would like to be able to hear the words though

personally I hate the talker, there not bad. But a 4 year old could easily make that same sound by banging saucepans together. To me its just aloud noise. And Ive never heard something like it! After hearing that Ive now lost my will to live. And that’s putting it as bluntly as possible.
If they really wannabe number one hit, they’ve got a lot to work on.
sorry
Nice piece on the guitar what about the lyrics though?! A bit hectic towards the end!

BRILLIANTTHANKS

!

Mucky Little Paw Prints

http://www.myspace.com/muckylittlepawprints

Mucky Little Pawprints

Muckylittlepawprints: A great sound, a great chill out-type song, I quite like it

Muckylittlepawprints

Terrible

Nice soother. Great for relaxing! The 1st was ok but the 2nd was a bit… Aaggghhhhh

the 2nd is our best song ever!

thank you anyways :)

And now 'Poppycocks'

http://www.myspace.com/poppycocks

Popycocks: A poppy song, pop songs aren’t my thing usually but that doesn’t stop me liking this song ?
To indie for me really im mean I like a bit of indie but it is to smooth

I love Poppycock’s!!!
They rock; they make me feel so alive. Id defently buy there album
Is beaty and extraordinary. =] I think many people would love to here Poppycock.

Bye

Popycocks is pritty good, its not to hevy not to fast and not to crazy I like it

Nice song. Great singer, have you ever thought of doing a version of dragostea din tei… it would be a real challenge but I think you could handle it!!

"beaty and extraordinary"

Brilliant. More! More!

hehe, yeah

from Talker: "But a 4 year old could easily make that same sound banging two saucepans together." I may have to steal that li'l gem of a line for one of my own reviews.

Can't believe there were no

"COCKS LOL" comments

Do they have a problem with writing in the english language?

...Country going down the drain ad nauseum...

I was just going to comment on this...

Perhaps MrScagdenSir needs to have a quiet word with his students' English teacher. I mean really - "to me its just aloud noise"?! Lunch time detention for that one.

Ha!

Actually the example I used was only a space away from being correct, so apologies for my snide remark. My job makes me a horrible person.

John Skelly

http://www.myspace.com/johnskellymusic

John Skelly: I really like my chilling tracks like Newton Faulkner or Jack Johnson and this is another addition to an acoustic artist that I like

Sounds like a person drunk on a park bench thinking they know what they are on about

Too chilled for me
John Skelly…boring and dreary again…sounds like he is trying to be plain white tee’s…nothing like them!

Luke Leighfield

Not many people wrote about this one - sorry

http://www.myspace.com/simplylukeleighfield

Luke Leighfield

Luke Leefield: I’m not a pop person but he has made a great sound, great singing

sorry there was more - I had it saved in the wrong place

If I try by luke leighfield I really liked I thought the singing sounded a lot like billy joe the singer from greenday. Don’t know what made it catchy but I really liked it. Keep up the good work guys.

Luke Leighfield…not spectacular but the best one by far at the moment

The rhythm is great and the drummer kept the beat well although it does go a bit depressing at times! Sort it out guys. A bit more enthusiasm

4 or 5 Magicians

http://www.myspace.com/4or5magicians

4 or 5 Magicians: Pretty cool, great use of the instruments, I enjoyed it

4 or 5 magicians

I like these they are really quite awesome they aren’t to soft or to heavy I surprised that they aren’t big already

Change the record by 4 or 5 magicians had a really catchy intro just like guns n roses. As soon as I heard it I thought this is awesome. The bridge in the middle was really cool, some very good drumming and guitar skills nice work guys.

Not my type of music but I don’t hate it,
But its ok for the type of people that like this kind of thing

Change the record is ok though, the beginning is a bit random with the heavy death metal

Loving the juxtaposition of

"quite" and "awesome".

LOLage

this is great

don't suppose you have the names of the kids that made the particular comments? Want to put the quotes on myspace, like when they show pictures on Blue Peter. For instance : "not my type of music but I don't hate it but it's ok for the type of people that like this kind of thing", Keisha, 14, Canterbury.

Erm....

Not sure I'm alowed to give out kids names (even first names in this paranoid day and age). I live in fear of...

TEEN INTERNET STALKING ENCOURAGED BY POST-ROCK ADDLED TEACHER

or something. But feel free to use the quotes (and attribute them to made up names?)

haha

this is a shame. I'll write a blog anyway. Cheers for doing this - good to know the kids are onside!

also are you sure you played them Change The Record

and not Ideal Man? Because Ideal Man is the one with the death metal style noise intro, and I can't see how anyone, even an underexposed 14 year old, could describe Change The Record as like Guns n Roses!

If you did do this, then the opening line has CUNT in it.

I wish my music teacher at school was like you!

actually the page went a bit odd

and played half of each song. They lapped 'em up though...

:D

these are amazing.

hahah

these are superb. should make this a regular feature on dis.

Broken English / Upglish?

http://www.myspace.com/brokenenglishmen

Broken Englishmen
I like these they are really quite awesome they aren’t to soft or to heavy I surprised that they aren’t big already

Broken English are awesome but the singing is a bit dim

Isolation by Broken Upglish wow i thought it was amazing im certainly going to by this song. Very good intro awesome bass line catchy drums good song. I really really liked the intro that made me go wow. Hope to hear more of your material. Very good work you should be famous, I hope isolation will become a single that would be awesome. very cool work.

Broken Upglish: Cool! Nice sound they make. One of the better experimental songs

Broken Upglish

A bit boring

"the singing is a bit dim"

Excellent.

We already had that "quite awesome" quote

for 4 or 5 Magicians already.

sorry

i've stuffed up the copying and pasting

I'm only human

Lolz

I'm actually quite shocked by this, the general consensus from me and my mates (as in us lot in the band) was that we were a bit crap... And I agree with the guy saying the singing is dim, the guy who mixed us was awful, spent literally five minutes doing it and didn't really listen to the songs as he mixed out some pretty important bits. I also like the yoda kids view "Nice sound they make".

btw

We were broken english, but then we split up, hence the broken upglish :D.

Ice Sea Dead People

http://www.myspace.com/iceseadeadpeople
I sea Dead People
Ice, Sea, Dead people

Awesome gives u great vibes

hate it because it sounds like some dieing cats it made me laugh all the way through how boring it was

Ice, See, Dead People: Great, loving the punk sound. There are very few decent punk bands out there e.g. The Gallows, but this band is wicked. Thumbs up to this

BRILLIANT

"hate it because it sounds like some dieing cats it made me laugh all the way through how boring it was"

This is exactly what I would have said when I was that age about Ice, Sea, Dead People.

Being only a year older than these people

I'm slightly ashamed that they cannnot spell and dislike Ice Sea Dead People

The kids are alright etc

some top notch punditry on here, puts Senors Shearer and Pleat to shame but as has been said above is this where the Queen's best is heading?!

Sincerely hope you're not their English teacher MrScagdenSir Sir?

yeah i mean considering this is probably

a group of mixed ability children who are 13/14 its not really suprising.

don't you mean

i sincerely hope your not there english teacher.

I am in fact AN English teacher

but for this lot I'm just the teacher who runs their 'writing about music' extension activity. I deliberately avoid focusing on their spelling etc as that can get some of them to not wan to write anything.

*want

outing yourself as an English teacher makes you put spelling errors in your post. Fact.

I give this thread

5 stars.

And a few little snippets...

Some of the bands not many of them got round to writing about but here are a few thoughts:

Linda's Nephew

http://www.myspace.com/lindasnephew

Lindas Nephew: I really love the sound that this band has, I think they really know how to use what they have to great effect, a nice calm sound. A bit like Bloc Party ?

Lindas Nephew

BBOOORRIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGG

Death in public

http://www.myspace.com/deathinpublicmusic

Death in Public: Wow, I really like this. Wicked beat, again, like Bloc Party. They have a really neat sound

Death in Public
cool

Fridge Noises

http://www.myspace.com/fridgenoises

Dreary…makes me feel depressed and boring…no tune. Absolutely rubbish…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They sound like the clangers

Make a rival to DiS

with just Year 9 Kids reviewing albums please. Much better.

how do they even know

the Clangers?

This is brilliant

i wish i was in a band for real so i had something for kids to slag off.

I posted my old band in the original thread

I'm actually quite excited at the idea of some kids telling me I'm shit

I'm going to try to get them all listened to

in the order they were posted. It's going to take a while to get through them all - the response was superb. The kids only have as long as the song is playing to listen to / discuss and write about the track which is why they are all rather short.

Anyone interested in getting involved can post on the original thread:
Anyone in a band brave enough to submit their music to review by my class of Year 9s?
http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2972189

haha well if they ever

get round to our stuff they'll have plenty of time to slate it.

yey!

we can well whore ourselves to that year 9 market now :)

haha, fantastic

can i ask what school you are teaching at?

as a student in canterbury it would be very interesting to know where all these kids are!

^ paedo

:D

bollocks

rumbled

Erm... no.

See my reply to 'can we have the kids' names' (above). And even though I used to teach in Canterbury (Simon Langton if you're interested) I now commute absolutley miles so... sorry.

these are well funny

top marks sir!

we never had teachers like you when i was at school.

I bet you weren't previously a bouncer like Alison Bramble in those annoying adverts I keep rolling over despite trying to avoid!

have you played them any Merzbau yet?

ace!

good work!
