Phoenix

...although not sung in French.

Malajube sing en francaise. They are Canadian.

hmm.

never got into either of those but malajube would probably be useful, thank you.

^ Malajube FTW!

Trompe-L'Oeil is probably in my top five albums

Yann Tiersen

Try some

Georges Brassens and scare yourself lots that you don't know enough French!

my answer to this question is always the same

that band that may or may not be on kooky records. i always struggle to remember their name but i think it's l'augmentation

Air, always Air.

I'm listening to them right no in fact.

I believe they are the 'most French' band that ever existed.

yes, Air

Premiers Symptomes (sp?)

yes^^

moon safari for me

in french, go for

Taxi Girl - seppukku
Autour de lucie - Immobile
Marc Seberg - lumières et trahisons

Foux Da Fa Fa

Flight of the Conchords

^ winner

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup?

Balkan folk with dashes of umm..Frenchness.

Ja t'eme

Erik Satie
Django Reinhradt
Daft Punk
Justice

i do love mr. zack.

Charles Trenet

Serge Gainsbourg
Edith Piaf
Noir Desir
Maurice Chevalier
any of that Chanson stuff
any of that coffee table kinda crap

y'know, and things.

Oubli

by Noir Desir, that one with Portishead is fecking ace.

Amelie soundtrack

basically.

.

Serge Gainsbourg
Joe Dassin
Jacques Dutronc
Jacques Brel (he's from Belgium)
Stereolab?

or even

monade?

i was wondering

if stereolad woul dcount/be of any help.
i can never make out fully what she is singing. it sounds wonderful nonetheless.

This

is what you're looking for

camille is pretty easy to follow

also get some stereototal-electronic group from berlin that are so fun and sometimes sing in french/german or english

and also

there's a CD called Pop à Paris with covers by people like Brigitte Bardot and Serge of english/american songs such as These Boots Are Made For Walking but all in French.

...

hairy, sexfiend Sebastien Tellier everytime.

Charlotte Gainsbourg has that breathy, Gallic thang goin on.

Cocteau Twins always reminded me of a seedy, French bedsit in the 70's (in the best, most sensual way)

As has been said above, Stereolab (esp Dots and Loops) remain the epitome of French cool for me

Oh, and of course, M83 is just claaaaass

....

Teki Latex
Mr Oizo
Malujube

and track 4 from TNT by Tortoise

DON'T

listen to the teenagers. PLEASE.

they're not french but

Nada Surf's "Là Pour Ça" is great (and correct français too, they went to the french lycée in new york)

and Camille is great.

four suggestions

eartha kitt - c'est si bon [it's sung in french though french she amn't]
john & jehn [anything you can find, they're ace]
claudes claudes - mao mao
miele - les mefaits

sloy

For avant-garde

try Sir Alice - she's a genius. Camille's album 'Le Fil' would, I imagine, be perfect for French revision...

yesyesyes

sir alice.
she is amazing, i have seen camille live...it was interesting.

oo francois

tho spanish as well as french but still

and stereolab too oh yes

hmm... and serge gainsbourg?

try these...

'en melody' by serge gainsbourg. basically a woman with a REALLY dirty laugh guffawing over a sex groove

and

'j'attendrai' by tino rossi. this will break. your. heart. and then i found out it meant 'i will wait' and then it broke it even more!! gorgeous stuff.

John et Jehn

Noooooooooooooonnnnn

je ne regrette rrrrrrrrieennnnnnnn

Francoise hardy

surprised she hasn't been mentioned

MC Solaar

MC Solaar

Poetry (even if you *don't* speak the language)

NEVER DO THAT

haha I remember our French teacher playing us 'MC Solaar'

and still maintain this is why he was sacked

Jacques Brel

always.

Also, if it's translation practice you're looking for, loads of people have done English covers of Jacques Brel songs. Check 'Next' covered by Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

serge gainsbourg

was listening to his 'les anees psychedeliques' comp which came out last year round a mates house the other week and had a distinct craving for croissants afterwards ....

woelv

you can stream her album from krecs. legit and everything.

What genres do you like

Hip Hop: MC Solaar or NTM for maximum expletive value
Punk/Rock: Noir Desir
Folk pop: Louise Attaque
Folk singer/songwriter: Jacques Brel
Folk folk: Tri Yann (if there's a bonus for slipping some Breton into your exam)
Chanson: Gainsbourg, Brassens
Quirky: Les Negresses Vertes

serge gainsbourg.

yeaahh. i can't even speak french, but amazing!

Manu Chao

Has some really good French language songs...but don't confuse them with the Spanish ones ;)

edith piaf

surely?

Stereo Total?

is that one frog and one kraut?!

Erm

Saïan Supa Crew?

les

shades, bon.

i'll second jacques brel

even though he's belgian.
but i'm being pedantic...

Poni Hoax

Poni Hoax on tigersushi...

george brassens

for sure!

France Gall

All the way. If you have the time then have a hunt on youtube for the Canadian TV special she did in an oil refinery. Amazingly akward stuff.

Soko

She's french and pretty lovely. 'I'll Kill Her' is a great little song.

is that a joke or is that a joke?

'I'll kill her' is the Worst Song of All Time.

Feist

has a few songs in French on 'Let It Die', and the whole album has a very Paris vibe...

actually

probably the best thing to do is watch a DVD of something you know with french subtitles/dubbing

Yann Tiresen

Puts anyone in a french mood-he did the amile soundtrack but he has other similar albums too. Makes me feel like wandering around Monmatre

also, try

klima (her earlier stuff is sung all in french), and charlotte gaisbourg (same deal, some french, some english)

Definitely...

Yelle! They're unreal, and although I'm not a fan of French lyrics, the awesome electronic music in the background completely distracts you and contrasts with the French lyrics quite well - recommended for sure.

Belle Epoque?

Amanda Woodward?

I can't begin...

... to think of any situation where I would want to be in a French Mood.

Coralie Clement

and Benjamin Biolay

Stereo Total

Mix of French, German and English.

Emily Loizeau

and Camille! Although her new album doesn't sound promising, from what I've heard...

woelv

if french canadian counts

TTC
